White fold mark across rear screen

Hi all,

My plastic rear screen has a distinct white band across it where it folds, had the car 6 months and been like it since I bought it, I have had Renovo about 20 years ago for an Alfa Spider window, just wondering what anyone has had good results with. The area is not actually creased, just milky white, I assume there are microscopic splits or something going on in the structure of the plastic material, I thought about Owatrol that 'feeds' plastics, I use it on the black plastics of my car. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

If it has started to go opaque, it is unlikely to improve much.  Dr Wack A1 Cabrio Window Polish is believed to be the product Porsche used to sell (no longer offered) for cleaning thier cabrio rear vinyl windows.  If did improve mine a bit, but the difference with a new window (mine cracked in the end) was very noticeable.

Hood trimmers can replace the vinyl screen for around £250-300.  Took @gary hubbard about 2 hours to do mine 18 months ago.

I've not tried but I have read that sometimes gentle heat can help bring the plasticisers back to life. A hair dryer might work.

Thank you all, very helpful info, the plastic's in reasonable condition, tiny split appearing on one side so will need a new one in next year or two

I believe some places offer an upgrade to glass. Cut out the need for the boxster chop. 🤙

You can’t fit a glass window to a hood that has a plastic window as the window/aperture hole is the wrong size/shape. The glass windows are smaller than the hole left by removing the plastic. If you want a glass window then it is a replacement hood, whether that be new or s/h one.

Sorry about that. Misleading. Just had a look at advert and it says 986 glass upgrade. And as you say, it is a full hood replacement. Soz. 😬

I've been away from the forum for a while, and thoroughly enjoying driving the car in the sun over the Summer - what great fun, and sticks a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. Now the weather's starting to change over here, so just contemplating how much longer I'll be driving it before Winter sets in, and starting to make another list of all the little bits and pieces to get done while it's off the road!

So yesterday I was giving the car a clean and noticed a very small split on one side of the vinyl rear window - as you can imagine. my heart sank when I noticed it. The rest of the hood and window is in good condition, so I wondered if there was any localised repair I would do to stop this very small split getting any worse. Strangely enough, the small split it actually away from where the vinyl naturally folds when the roof opens.

Much appreciate any input that anyone may have 👍

No personal experience of fixing this but assuming the plastic isn't brittle maybe try something like this clear, flexible , marine adhesive in the gap ?

Thanks alot - just taken a quick look and think I'll order a tube and give it a go 👍 hopefully it'll stem the tide.

I did also wonder if there was some kind of way of welding the crack to reseal.

Mine cracked in the bottom left corner and I covered it from inside with some clear heavy duty self-adhesive tape for 3 to 4 months to prevent water getting in, before I got a new one stitched in by a specialist hood trimmer.

Thanks bud, there is a guy not far from us that can do it, old skool trimmer called Guy Broom, apparently is very good. The rest of the hood is decent, otherwise I'd stick one on with a glass screen to avoid the 'Boxster chop'

I looked at the glass option as my roof is not black, a face flit glass one was going to cost north of £800 fitted and an after-market with a narrow rear screen was going to cost even more.  Needs to be a good vinyl, the original material Porsche used is no longer available, but I believe the nearest equivalent is sourced from a supplier in The Netherlands.  Should be a sub £300 job and mine took about 2 hours at the trimmers as he did it as soon as I arrived.

I also just came across this product - seems like you can only purchase it through Amazon's German site - I'd be interested to know if anyone's seen this before, or tried it?

Only issue I would have is the patch of material left on the outside surface...

Well that's what I thought, but with the very small split I have right on the edge, I thought well worth giving it a go - ordered a tube of the stuff this morning to give it a go - if it lives up to the reviews, it could be well worth it! If I had damage anywhere other than the edge then I'd probably look at replacement, but let's see how it plays out - could be a low cost solution 🤞

Just came across this post on 911uk for anyone looking at alternatives to restore the plastic rear window:

911uk.com - Porsche Forum : View topic - Cabriolet roof rear window refurbishment.

My local more spares place just recommended a tube of that for my milky rear screen. To hot at the moment but will do it next week
