Advice needed......Would this service history put you off?

Hi all looking to buy another Boxster as a daily, thought I'd found a half decent one and got all excited but then i was sent the history.......only 5 proper stamps (and a couple of stickers) and no invoices between 2009 and 2021. Would this put you off?

The car has had some bigger work done in recent times including RMS, IMS, Clutch, Coolant Lines, Ac Condensers etc but it doesn't scream out a loved and cherished example over the previous years especially towards the start of its life.

Any advice would be great, would this lack of servicing potentially cause premature failure of things / increase the risk of bore score?

The car in question is a 987.1 3.2 Manual

Thanks

Ash

Probably help if you offered a few more details, especially the price wanted for her..?

Compared to my 2010 the history is quite frankly pathetic for a performance car. Has it got history and stamps to support brake fluid changes etc..?

Max intervals for the 987 is 20k miles if i recall and some of those stamps would suggest it's not been loved like you say.

Then again, if it drives tight and is say anything between £7k-£9k it may be worth a punt.

Have you checked out the mot history online?

Si.

Mot History is ok, only failed once for incorrect colour indicator bulbs but otherwise its a pass with advisories or without.

Nothing regarding brake fluid I believe that's it.

Lots of advisories over the years for tyres, bushes, brakes etc.

Car is £10k it has 90,000 miles on the clock and the last MOT is clean.

Drive her and make up your mind based on the experience feedback and gut feeling. Your original post mentions a few big ticket items have been addressed but after all , taking a punt on a used motor is always a punt.

Is it a private or trade sale?

Is that first service in 2004? Given what looks like 10 years of 4-5k a year and only changing the oil every 4 years, I doubt the engine is going to be a particularly long lived example and may already have substantial bearing wear. Having said that, with regular changes from now on it could well last as long as you keep it. If it drives well and has been looked after by recent owners it’s probably worth a punt for the right price, but get an oil test done when you get it serviced to see if there are any hidden issues of bearing wear and be ready to punt it on to WBAC if there are.

Private sale,

The history has put me off going up to see it to be honest but I wonder if was a bit too hasty in my decision.

The guy selling it is a Porsche nut and is selling it to fund another 911, he has assured me it drives well and I do think the is legitimate. He has only had the car 3 months though. He is a Porsche GB member and bought it from another Porsche GB member (this person did the big jobs)

2007 i think the first one was which would tie in as the car is a 2005

I'd be searching though the PCGB site for more info on the car first and then go and take a look at her. Perhaps mention you'd like to have her inspected at your cost and gauge the response...?

I did try that but you need to be a paid member don't you?

Maybe time to join.

I don't think the seller would have an issue with an inspection, the main issue for me is the history and if i sold it one day it could be an issue for others.

Selling after 3 months of ownership is a massive question mark for me.

I agree this is another red flag.

He does seem genuine though I must say I don't think he is dodgy in the slightest, maybe just hasn't gelled with it or maybe trying to sell for a profit who knows.

I've met some of the nicest people while buying cars, they've still left me with the odd lemon though.

I bought a car with no history. I went in knowing it will need money spending on it but that was reflected in the price.

Getting the oil changed regularly is important for these cars but that doesn't mean that a car with a full history won't be riddled with problems.

Looking at those pictures, it’s had services in 2007, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021, 2022.

None have gone over the recommended mileage (20k), and it appears to have been done every two years, in-line with schedule but exception of 2011 and 2019. It seems to have had minor, major, in the right frequency too.

It’s had two services since 2019 at Porsche specialists and so personally I wouldn’t be overly concerned with that history if it was my ideal spec and priced accordingly. If it has any recent receipts as well, then that’s a bonus.

You could call the last service guys and get their opinion, if they can remember the car. They may (or may not) tell you.

As the car hasn’t been long in current ownership though and it’s a private sale I’d definitely have an inspection (and borescope if it’s an S model) to make sure the engine is sound.

Edit: I don’t know why my font on this post is so big!

Have a look to what tyres it is running on, will also indicate if it’s been cherished or a case doing the bare minimum to keep the car on the road. Personally if you’ve reservations now , walk away plenty out there and or you could buy mine but it would not be cheap !!

Below is the history written down, showing age and mileage gaps, where it doesn't look as bad i guess. I do worry about these stickers though as nothing to back them up. If home serviced id expect to see an invoice for the parts used.

May 2007 - 17483

Nov 2009 - 33894 (30 Months & 16414 miles)

June 2013 - 55553 (42 Months & 21656 Miles)

March 2015 - 66701 (21 Months & 11148 Miles) Stickers (Who's knows if these are legit)

April 2017 - 69819 (25 Months & 3118 Miles) Stickers (Who's knows if these are legit)

June 2021 - 82722 (50 Months & 12903 Miles)

June 2022 - 89443 (12 Months & 6721 Miles)

I guess I am more worried those stickers have just been put in to try and make the history better as there is invoices for the 2009 and then nothing after until 2020.

On Toyos so a midrange tyre.

I don't want a 3.4 I have been there and done that :)

Ideally want a 2.9 987.2 if I am honest but nothing around that meets my requirements.

Nowt wrong with Toyos like Kuhmo, quite a underrated tyre, do everything it says on the tin , just don’t last long , definitely not ditch finders!

Didn't claim they were ditch finders... I just stated they are a midrange tyre like they are.
