How is the sound recording not working? Does the sound playback sound like it's breaking up? Or is the sound of the exhuast being drowned out by the wind noise?

I believe if it's breaking up: a better quality mic? What exact device are you using?

If it's wind noise then a dead cat / windscreen on the microphone solution

Morning DisplayName .Thanks for your reply. Yes the playback sounds like it is breaking up, could obviously be the quality of the mike. The camera is an Akaso EK7000, not the best I know but pricewise I thought I'd give it a try. I did have a GoPro Hero but that went for posh one when it was on my track bike that got trashed 😭. As mentioned the sound is better when the car is static, but I think the road and wind noise once moving is too much.

  2. Hi All. I've been trying to get a good audio sample of the Topgear manifolds/PSE set-up I have on my Gen 2 Boxster S exhaust. I bought a Sports action camera and tried that suckered on above the number plate looking down at the exhaust tips and took it for a drive but it seems too much noise for the camera to handle and didn't sound good. It was marginally better with the car static but still doesn't do it credit. Tried it suckered onto the rear of by my wind deflector, and also tried my Garmin dashcam alongside it but again neither sounded great.
It doesn't have to be video as well, just audio if there's a way to do it justice. Would trying different frame rates on the camera help it handle the audio better?
Can anyone offer some practical advice on how to get a good recording because I think it sounds awesome and wanted to share it with you guys.

    Great result @Gramps

What's the BHP for a 981 GTS? 325bhp or thereabouts?

There are some good gains to be found in Porsche NA cars, it's just that they need more than a remap to achieve them.

A couple of 3.2 986S saw circa 290+bhp with bolt on mods and decent, bespoke mapping sessions - so it's there to be found if you go looking.

Yes it just goes to show how much Porsche must actually hold things back. I actually went with the TopGear manifolds/cats as I wanted that PSE sound all the time (switching it on was always the 1st thing I did once started). A power gain for me was secondary, but a well pleasing side result. But strangely enough the car can be whisper quiet with PSE off (AKA wife in car 😉), but with PSE on it's all you'd ever wanted from an exhaust. Great to have the best of both worlds at the flick of a switch 🙂

Nice!  How much of a difference is the drive before and after?

Bit early to say as not had a chance to try it out much. But one of the reason's I had the remap done was that the car wasn't pulling as smoothly after having fitted the manifolds/cats, but did seem smother after. But like I say not had much of a chance to try it out fully yet

Thats a hugely impressive gain on a naturally aspirated engine! thinking of swapping my 986 S for a 987 S at some point, and the thought of 340+bhp is very appealing!

Not bad is it, puts it well above Spyder and later model figures. Leon has just recently moved premises and kitted himself out with the latest gear 🙂

He did a good job for you. And it is indeed a good looking car. Looking at your graph though the lines don't cross at 5252 rpms.

Must admit it means nothing to me. Saw K.I.T.T.'s explanation above and I'm still none the wiser. Could it be that my readings are in Nm and not lb ft?

I'll ask Leon and see if he has an answer 🙂

  7. I've eventually got round to having my gen 2 Boxster S remapped having fitted Topgear sports manifolds and cats in the summer (a £30 black Friday deal forced my arm). Well pleased with the results. It drives beautifully and sounds fantastic, this is how all flat 6s should sound. I just have to turn the stereo off and listen to the PSE symphony. From 306hp (310PS) and 360Nm stock it's now at 344hp (349PS) and 398Nm. Only other mod I'm aware of is a BMC air filter. Not a bad gain for a naturally aspirated engine that many say you can't do a lot with.
Big thanks to Leon at RoadRagePerformance for getting the max out of it. Just got to wait till next spring now before I can enjoy it to the max.

Checked the date - I am not around during the day - but could do evening - only challenge being it would be on the drive in the cold and dark - but the process doesn't take very long so depending on timing could make it work - but I wouldn't be available until 5-5:30 pm ish

Morning Paul. I'm willing to fit in with whatever suits you best. Not sure there will be too many options with the temp for this time of year but daylight is certainly a doable option if it makes things easier for you. You're only 30mins from me so I could make it to you any time. Can't do Mondays due to grandparenting duties. I'm due for the remap from about 11:00, but how long it'll take and when they can get me done is a bit of an unknown. But I'd imagine it'd be done by mid afternoon, so a separate trip would probably suit better and tie in with when suits yourself. TIA ...Rob

Lepsons are in Gillingham - they are the "daddy's" by reputation - but priced accordingly - my biggest issue is having my car up on bricks outside any of these places - there's a company that will come to you, loan you wheels and sub the refurb out to Lepsons - takes away all the "aggravation tax" https://exelwheels.co.uk/ - they have a very good reputation on here.

I'll look them up. Pretty sure it was Inspraytion I used previously. Had them do 2 sets for me. I took the wheels to them and left the car "on bricks" outside my own house (which is probably worse 🤣). I don't need the car so will probably just drop the wheels to them, thanks again

Will check on the date.  I have used inspraytion in Strood for wheels on a couple of dailies. Good results and I have heard good things from them.

Morning Paul. That name sounds very familiar and I still have an image of the place in my mind which looks very familiar on Street maps so I think that may be the one. I was very happy with the job they done on my Proteus Jag rims. Looking to get my sport design rims done at some time over the winter👍

I can code it for you.  I am in Strood. If you can’t find anyone closer then feel free to give me a shout.

Cheers Paul. I've still got you on my list  (of one 🤣) as you kindly offered previously. Finally got round to fitting it so it's getting nearer. After fitting some TopGear manifolds and cats in the summer I'm off to see Leon at Road Rage Performance in Paddock Wood for a(nother 😌) remap on 30/11, would you be "available" around then? If not I'm sure I could fit in with you whenever. Also I had my old X-type alloys refurbed in Strood a few years back, are you familiar with a good quality refurb place in Strood? Cheers...Rob

Having fitted cruise to my 987.1 in the Summer I can confirm that the second screw is not required. The stalk is completely solid with just the one screw and works fine.
I agree with you about the harness tie - a complete pain to access and release!

    That's what I like to hear 👍

  13. Hi All. Finally got round to fitting my cruise control stalk to my gen 2 Boxster. Some write ups I read say yeh yeh 20min job, so I presume there must be some short cuts out there. I searched high and low for a post on my exact model (987.2) but couldn't find anything anywhere. Admittedly a relatively simple job, but 20mins?? Probably took me longer than that trying to release the seemingly unnecessary wiring harness clip 🙄. But my question is regarding the 2 x 8mm Torx screws securing the CC stalk to the existing column switches. For those that have tackled this task I presume there is no easy way of getting the "inner" screw in situ without removing the steering wheel? Or is it even necessary? The switch seems solid enough in there. Or does that screw, which screws into a metal bar at the rear of the switches act as a possible earth and is absolutely necessary? I will get the steering wheel off at some stage and add it in then, but wondered if it can make do for now? Anyone ever ran with that option? Next thing to do of course is get it programmed in. 🙂51698940624_0ee01a1f93_z.jpg%20

Nice, I bought that exact same mesh to do same, but haven't got round to it yet. How easy was getting bumper off? How did you attach mesh? I was aiming to do something neat - glued?

      • took the bumper off so I could clean out the years of debris that have accumulated in and around the rads. Quite a simple job on mine and makes the grill fitting a lot easier. Made a template out of cardboard just slightly bigger than I needed then trimmed down the plastic using a dremel so get a nice friction fit. But to secure them in place I took the horizontal slat covers off the frame and by using the dremel to take away a small section on the lip of the frame was able to feed a small zip tie underneath the cover so nothing shows externally. I also used the plastic mesh to replace the solid section in the middle on my model. The top of the plastic fits snugly in the original mounting holes for the middle section then I used a thin strip of clear silicon sealant along the bottom to hold it in place. Obviously may not apply to you model but if it does it's worth bearing in mind. Will supply more detail if required. It is a laborious job to get an exact fit of the mesh due to having to cut it at so many places, but when viewed from normal height and distance perfectly presentable. I used the flat edge of the purchased mesh along the tops of the vents as they are "flat" as opposed to the bottom which is obviously curved. Cheers..Rob

Evening! First post in this thread from me - New owner :)

Spent a couple hours this evening doing some minor stuff to the 987.

2500grit, cutting compound, polish, BH speed wax and the headlights are sorted

    Before:

    fyz8nLBl.jpg

    After:

    jddYdRLl.jpg

Took the panels out at the front, partly to learn how to do it, but partly to check out the front drain-tubes that are most likely blocked. I was right! Didn't have time to do the right side too but left side both drain holes were blocked. Leaves and wet mushy black debris all over the place in the scuttle area in general.. Only took a photo of one though

    gtUowqMl.jpg

Had a fiddle with the DIY front-vent mesh grills to find that one of the foglight units is actually snapped on the screw-mount. Bit of glue to dry overnight. (Are all things this straight forward to take off this car? The screws weren't even rusty!?)

    4kWBEGDl.jpg

Also didn't like how the meshes were attached (just bent edges with some silicon in a couple of the corners).

I'll probably clean this all up and do it a different way. Anyone got any links to good mesh products to buy, or maybe some nice ideas for a DIY one?

Just posted up my grills, see page 135

I had some of these and one fell off during the first drive after installation. Check that they are firmly into the bodywork as one of the springs on mine wasn’t tight so it popped out and then wizzed around in an arc on the wires while I was driving. I only noticed when I got home. Luckily there were no scratches in the paint, but the spring had come off completely so they both went in the bin and I had to refit the originals.

Strangely enough I had the same issue but my own fault. Took the bumper of to do my grills (just posted up) and lost one of the spring clips. They are quite loose in the indicator so I'd drop a bit of superglue on them when they arrive. I got onto AliExpress (Bluetech are the actual guys that sell the indicators) and credit where credit's due they are sending me a replacement pair FOC

  17. Finally got round to fitting my mesh on the front vents and decided to do the centre section as well, it's a blanking plate as standard. I was going to paint the centre section with glossy black Plastidip after a rub down but thought I'd give the mesh ago as I had plenty left over, what do you think? Cleaned the debris out of the coolant and A/C the rads whilst I had the bumper off and Lanoguard treated under the inner wings (and anything else in sight) whilst I had the liners off. Gave the wheels a good clean then applied PoorBoys wheel sealant followed by TurtleWax HYBRID SOLUTIONS CERAMIC + GRAPHENE PASTE WAX, don't know if both were needed but as I had them on they went. Glad to get the jobs out the way before winter

Only a full refurbishment will sort that out, even if you sanded it out it will be back in no time.

Your alloys are Spyder/Cayman R wheels and need doing by someone decent to get the black with the silver line around the edges and the silver barrel.

I would also recommend having them ceramic coated once they have been done to protect them and make cleaning much easier 👍

yeh, might be one to get done some time in the winter months

  19. Has anyone tried painting the insides of their wheels? Why do the insides seem to be ignored? I thought of using Hammerite or the like, or is there a purpose made paint, or is it even a no-no for whatever reason? I've always thought they could look a lot better, and maybe be better protected against the oxidisation that causes the paint to flake.51671069330_0844d07350_z.jpg

  20. I'd just finished cleaning the wifes car and actually polished it for the 1st time in 9yrs, and within a couple of hours it seemed that a flock of seagulls or the like had taken true exception to it. Lucky enough my 2 cars, including the Boxster of course, had their covers on. If ever there was a good reason for an outdoor cover this was it.

  21. Hi All. Does anyone if there is a refurbishment service out there for the bonnet badges? Or has anyone refurbed their own. Mine is a little flakey in places and I want it to look good again before I fit a bonnet stripe. Cheers51359857875_49083e1be8_z.jpg

Take your centre caps out from the front wheels. Mine melted and fell off after a particularly enthuisiastic run at Bedford. Admittedly they were ebay specials, but even so, lol. They fell off after I had parked up, the retaining clip part of the mouldings just got soft, deformed and fell out.

Interestingly the pads, fluid and pedal feel had remained OK.

Best top end I saw was 135mph.

You must have been more enthusiastic than me, best top speed I managed was about 125 and best lap was a 3 15, which was about 15s faster than my 1st sessions fastest lap. Hard to get a clean lap and a real bummer when you're about to try and put in a quick one then someone pops out of the pits just in front of you, that kills it dead and you have to go all the way round again. Did enjoy it though, although a tad apprehensive thrashing my pride and joy round the track. Mine was the only Boxster, a few Carreras and Cayman GTs. How are the Ferodos on the road? Much squeal? I kept my standard pads in in the end.

Done one at Snetterton in May and they're still there, on my car that is 😂. I did have Carbontech pads in for that date but they squealed so much aftuck the bog standards back on. Wanted to swap them back today but the weather here ahs been absolute shyatee  so hoping the BS ones will hold out. May take the Carbontech with me and change them there if necessary, If I can borrow (or take) a jack.
