Various tyre tests available on the web, all will be new for new comparisons. Here you get what they won’t give you; what are they like after 3 years.

Michelin Primacy4 claims to perform fairly linearly (+ variant  even more so) throughout its useful life, no reason not to assume this technology won't filter down to the rest of the range.

I put two lots of penetrating oil on them, about a week apart, got two front ones off with no damage but the rears were still corroded on solidly.

I even tried warming them up with a gas soldering iron to shock the corrosion bond with differential expansion, no luck.

I will never forget while stripping the rear axle of a Suzuki quad.

Took both of the outer captive nuts off and clamped the axle vertically in a large bench vice.

While standing on the bench I proceeded to blatter one end with a sledge hammer, after around 30 minutes I was punctured so admitted defeat.

I fashioned a funnel from plasticine, filled it with Plus-Gas and went to bed.

The following morning I went into the garage to refill the funnel and the axle was lying on the floor, wasn't sure if I should be pleased or p*ssed-off

Sounds like you were lucky with the front or unlucky with the rear.

I bought Michelin Pilot Sports 4. Always served me well. Great in the wet and not bad when it comes to durability.

I always put genuine pads on mine.  On the last car I only replaced them just before I sold it - after 40k miles so IMHO cheap pads are a false economy.

I remember back in the days of Vauxhall Cavalier SRi even the tuning companies like Courtenay Sport recommended OEM pads.

There were two offerings though, budget & premium, Premium was the way to go.

Mate had 4 new tyres put on his car (C4S) by Kwik-Fit, who then MOT'ed the car the next day and failed it because it was fitted with the wrong rated tyres for the car......

I got popcorn and listened to the speaker phone conversation over that little outage.

What was the resolution, I am guessing they didn't replace the tyres but modified the MOT Testers expectations

I have an SD. Had it since new, just turned 134k a few days ago. Brilliant car, effortless cruiser, holds the road well and the wife loves it too. I'd replace it with similar but they don't do diesel any more. A few minor issues; intercooler replaced under warranty at about 8 months due to a weep, door window switches replaced again under warranty as the chrome fell off, TPM valves replaced, again under warranty too. Replaced an Adblu pipe at my own expense as it furred up (250?). Apart from that, regular servicing every 20k, PDK service every 40k and it has been very reliable. Tyres lasted 60k a set which is unheard off (Michelin Latitude Tour All Seasons). Needs a full set of pads and discs regularly though (they are heavy). Replaced a couple of CV joints too, but it is a high miler. Highly recommended. If you're getting one, make sure it has the surround cameras which are brilliant when parking - especially with the overhead view.

60k from a set of tyres is very impressive, part of the reason I have a liking for Michelin.

Is PCCB an option, would that save in the long run I wonder and might be a worthwhile extra when on the hunt for a car?

I have been back and forth between England and Ireland on the ferry many times in the Boxster and other cars, locked them all as normal every time and never had the alarm go off to my knowledge, definitely never had a flat battery or seen anyone who has. Some of those sailings were seven half hours Liverpool to Dublin.

Coming home from Liverpool to Belfast I got access to the car deck just after we'd cleared land.

Was like one of those Tesla light-offs on the car deck with horns, sirens, lights and indicators except for our car, felt a bit left out TBH

Well, It was a $20 fix! One brake light switch, and a can of electronics cleaner..not one incident in tonight's 2 hr. ride. A bit of dielectric grease on the switch tabs, and a spray of cleaner on the ECU connectors! Hardest part is getting to the switch, I ended up taking the seat out for easier access.

Thanks so much for the info!!

    Bob

    Here's a handy tip,,,,

WD40 is excellent at dissolving oxidisation on contacts if you don't have access to some solvent based Switch Cleaner of course.

    Do tell...?

Surely getting chosen for Wheeler Dealers is a bad thing? Means you've got a wreck...

    I think it's too old to show in a search (attaboy) as this is all that shows up, for me at least;

It was all a tad convenient, fella turned up out of the blue with a non-runner. A few guys @Paul O offered to buy it as a winter project IIRC then Ollie from Attaboy showed up looking for a Boxster and despite offering less than our members the new fella sold to WD.

IIRC WD wanted another Boxster as a comparison and a few of the guys on here volunteered their cars with one waiting in all day for a call that never materialised, then he got grumpy

There was a link to the juicy bits not shown on TV showing just how duplicitous the whole media circus is and what a grinning clown/mouthpiece Mike Brewer is.

Perhaps one of the Mods can perform a more thorough search.

Still not found anything better for Black cars than Poorboys Glaze and Nattys wax is really good stuff and so easy to apply and buff - i did the wife's X6 with blackhole at the weekend and it really gives a lovely deep colour.

That looks deep enough to swim in,

I misread your post above and couldn't believe you subjected your wifey to that sort of treatment

They do at least three things.  Deglaze the pads, allow more routes for cooling air and save weight on an unsprung component so reducing suspension inertia.

And as everyone knows the 2.7's discs overheat at every corner, they handle like a cart-horse due to the excess weight but it's a wonder they can stop at all what with their pads being double-glazed.

A small price to pay for the back not rusting and delamination but the performance gains more than make up for that  :ermmm:

It's the silly perforated discs that are a  gimmick imoa.Nothing to do with cost.

They really should get into the groove  ;)

Took it for a service including oil change.

Only things noted were the rear tyres which are ageing and need replaced if I don't want them as an advisory on the MOT next month. Shame as there is plenty of tread on them.

Sounds like some fun in an empty car park before replacing

And the tech said that the oil looked "burnt" despite only having covered 3000 miles since last service.
He asked if I ragged it around. I do give it a spirited blast but only when its been warmed up properly.

Maybe he hasn't seen black oil before

Asking a male if he 'rag' a sports car would be like asking water if it's wet IMHO.

Is the oil temp hack available on the 987 like the early 986's.

I think you're firing the imagination of these kids & that can only be a good thing. They won't be the ones who key your paintwork, because they've learned they get more for it when they clone it and sell it on.

Hey don't shoot the messenger Mrs @Paul P was thinking it.

  14. Disconnect the MAF and see if you notice a difference.

Check nothing is binding especially if you replaced brake shoes.

Wouldn't do any harm to use the stale fuel up either as the later 986's don't have a fuel circuit as such.

Drive another back to back for comparison. When we had our MY04 2.7 986 we test drove a 3.4 987 and both Mrs Exy and I felt our 986 felt livelier and certainly didn't feel like parting with almost £20k to change.

I had the same issue on my 718, involved the spoiler frame (the motor and mechanism) being replaced.

Ball park £800 part iirc (last year), replaced by the independent supplying dealer under their third party warranty.

Just out of curiosity if this wasn't covered by warranty would you fix it at your own expense or live with it?

Just had my tax reminder through, since when did it go up to £365, FFS,  wouldnt mind if a few ££ of it got spent on the F____G  Pot Holes. Rant over, At least the PDK makes it £5 cheaper than the Manual. Have a nice day

One of the reasons I don't miss Mr Box.

    That's £1 a day so if you don't drive it for a month it's cost you £30  :(

    Quick update on this.

Fitted a new NAPA alternator today, in a dark cramped garage. I took the seat out yesterday when it wasn't raining, which helped access.

Connected everything back up. No battery light. 12.4v and 14.6v running. Well happy and it feels great to fix something yourself

Thanks for all the advice 🙂

Really glad you got it sorted, nothing like a spot of DIY for some instant gratification.

Now you're up and running again maybe it's time to change the car, we do love to offer advice on car shopping also  :whistle1:
