Washed and dried it. Gave the roof the Milton fluid treatment. Then gave the roof a coat of Fabsil.

Look much better now. In fact Ive felt unfeasibly happy all day and keep looking out the window at the lovely looking roof.

I know, Im a very sad man. 😂

As it was only dusty and some fly marks I went over the bodywork with Auto Glym Rapid Detailer (moves dead flies so easily!) and the glass with Fast Glass plus lint rolled the roof.  Now ready for France next week and in under 30 mins.

Found out that the annoying rattle when the roof is up is due to a loose handle in the roof, made worse by the sun visor just slightly touching it. i won't say how long it has taken me to track that down !

Ah, it took me some time to track down the passenger sun visor tapping on the roof handle on mine too!

Drove to stay overnight in Dover ready to tackle the port to get on the 07:10 DFDS crossing to Calais in the morning

🤞

Enjoyed fish and chips on the beach at Walmer between Dover and Deal.

Reckon you should be OK. Traffic down here is nothing like as grim as it was last week (I'm not far from the tunnel) 👍

Yep less than 20 minutes to get through passport control at Dover port and half of that was because a Muppet on front of us had a long discussion with the French officials before being waived aside and allowing the queue to be processed.

Now got an hour and a half to kill before boarding having got up at 4am 🥱

Made it yo our destination.  Took a small detour near Alencon to find the D26, as recommended by @Patt.  Cracking open flowing road up into the forest park and found the Sherman tank memorial to the Normandy battle fought in the forest in August 1944 at the highest point in the forest.

Car now tucked up in bed after 300 or faultless so miles today.  The only downside is just how hot the front a rear luggage compartments get (no chocolate will survive the journey :sad01_anim:)  even after I've added insulation and refitted the cat heat shields that were missing when I got it. BTW, first time it's been in a garage overnight in my ownership!

Got dragged round a local village bric-a-brac this morning.  Found this solution to those pesky tight rear hub/driveshaft nuts.  1000Nm with 1" drive... Too long to fit in a Boxster though 🙁. Then filled up with Total 98 Excellium at €1.912/l (£1.65)!

Great find!

Let's us know how it fairs when you next get chance to try it out?

If you're like me, you'll be loosening and then re-tighting the axle bolts just to test it out! 😅

Sorry, no can do. It wouldn't have fitted in the Boxster to bring it home ☹️

Where was that, deepest France?

Upper Loire, about 30 km west of Le Mans. Found another cracking Boxster road on the way there from our gite.

Seriously? Not diagonally behind the seats?
Anyway, we don’t know the price. For €40 I’d twist wire it to the exhaust to get it back, for €200+ I’d walk away.
Do you know the château built over the river? Near Tours IIRC. We stopped there and did an afternoon kayaking under the arches.

I do have The Better ½ with me so a bit limited on the space and tying to exhaust front.

Have seen the chateau before (IIRC it was one of the 'hi res' pictures that came with Windows 95 way back when and I had it in a screen saver slideshow), but we're about 90 minutes north of Tours so not this trip.

Glad you found it, and welcome to "Billy Goat Pass"

I hope you managed to get into three figures on the speedo too.

Ks , yes (about 130). Miles, no. I have The Better ½ with me...

Picked up and installed the clutch booster spring today and not suprisingly the clutch pedal and shifting has been transformed.  I'd still describe it as on the heavy side of normal compared with more modern stuff and the real test will be going from 1st to 2nd when cold so time will tell but I'm just glad I didn't rush into a £1200 clutch replacement so thanks to everyone who contributes on here the info so far is saving me a fortune

Have you changed the oil in the gearbox?  This does improve the 6 speed 1st to 2nd change a little when cold, but it is still very baulky.  They all do that, sir!  Also what condition is your front gearbox mount in.  This can affect the gearchange quality and most 986s seem to need one by 18-20 years old as the rubber degrades, splits and tears.

No but the gearbox oil is my next job as it's done 120k with no evidence of it ever being done, maybe i could get the mounts inspected/replaced at the same time.  I did have some on order with the spring from a well known parts specialist but was let down by them so ended up buying from opc and it was £30 cheaper so who knew.  I'm going to get it on the classic register first then i'll order some oil from opc with the 15% discount

the Classic Porsche discount at 15% is only for parts fitted at an OPC, so at their labour rates....  However you should still get 10% if you ask.  Pretty much all genuine parts are cheapest from an OPC with the 10%, other stockists can't get the same discount that an OPC does from Porsche and also they often only check stock once you order as you seem to have discovered, they are however better value for after market parts....  Any good 75W90 gear oil is fine for the 'box and changing at 120k (mine was done at 90k with Millers) should make a difference you can feel.

Did the obligatory lap of the circuit at Le Mans as I'm in the area.  Dropped into the museum shop too. Bought 2 official Porsche baseball caps (his n hers) for £18 each after ACO member and currency exchange discounts.  They also do the official leather keyrings at a ridiculously cheap (compared to UK OPC prices anyway) £14.45 if you are a member too.

At last MOT got an advisery of thin rear brake pads so went onto Euro Car Parts and got Brembo rear discs with 45% discount for £26 each bit of a bargain same discs from Design911 would have cost over £150 for a pair. It pays to shop around
