MH82
Morning all, Hoping someone can help, as I'm nervous to drive the car anywhere and am now on the train to work. Had most of the week off in the Cotswolds, lovely top down weather, car didn't miss a beat. this morning started it up and there's a horrid whining noise coming from the what sounds like the n/s/r quarter. Worse at low speeds or low rpm. i've recorded some of the noise as a video so if anyone wants to hear and help diagnose then maybe we can do that via text/email after a PM? just need help to roughly identify and know whether it's driveable to the local specialist (people have recommended eporsch, which is about 10 miles away). thanks in advance matt
Menoporsche
Can’t help with noise but eporsch get excellent reviews here. You could even try them directly.
Tony Daniel
Ring Eporsch and see if they can collect it for you. I wouldn't risk driving it.
Nobbie
Sounds very much like something associated with the serpentine belt. Maybe power steering pump as that is on n/s. Have you tried turning the steering wheel to see if noise changes. Could you remove the rear access panel behind the seats to have a bit of an investigation? Could also be the tensioner pulley. Worth checking for any fluid loss beneath the car and level in the expansion tank as squealing can also be a sign of the water pump going.
edc
It may be the engine compartment fan. If it was linked to the drive belt you'd probably hear a change in noise as the engine revs up and down. Eporsch are excellent. I don't think they do recovery though and will just contract it out. Better bet to use your own and get it trailered there if you are very concerned. Once on great terms with them they will even pick up your car from your home if on their way ?
MH82
Ok quick update. So thanks to Nobbie for a separate input to the diagnosis. contacted eporsche earlier and then drove over this afternoon. Interestingly the noise disappeared once the engine was up to temp so they weren't able to even attempt a diagnosis. However we decided that if it went away then it probably isn't too serious and to look to book it in when I can drop it off as it clearly manifests itself when cold. happy to hear some continued thoughts though in the interim, will drive the wife's car until I can take it in (though hers is thirstier and quicker than mine)
Nobbie
Maybe it's something like the clutch assembly on the A/C compressor making a noise when cold, but once it warms up it goes away. Could try with A/C turned right down to low to make sure it's engaged, and then with it turned off and see if there's any difference in noise from cold. MH82
Ok so, finally managed to get it looked at (at the Porsche Centre Brooklands). technician didn't even need to drive it, turned the steering and said it was the power steering. Popped it in the ramp and there's a leaky pipe, only question is has it shafted the pump as well wont find out for a week as they're chocca and I had a tortuous journey home via public transport niaively keeping my fingers crossed for an not ridiculous cost on the plus side he did say everything else underneath looked in fine fettle, and they'll do an inspection check as well
Nobbie
New pump looks to be about £5-600, why not get them to fit a second hand one if needed. A search on EBay found one off a 2009 987S for £33 buy it now. Probably worth buying it and giving it to the garage when you take it in at that price. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-BOXSTER-987-POWER-STEERING-PUMP-AND-TANK-RESERVOIR/292566095644?hash=item441e4c571c:g:nnkAAOxyI8lR97G4
Menoporsche
OPC Brooklands won’t fit a used part! Various indies won’t now also.

MH82
At this point I'd pay £800 or so to have a healthy car with a clean bill of health (though the summer seems to have ended!)
Tony Daniel
The pump will sound pretty dreadful when its low on fluid so hopefully the pipe replacement is all you need
MH82
Please all, under no circumstances go to Brooklands OPC. Horrifically poor customer service. Let's hope they're better with the tools.

Menoporsche
Can you not extract it from them and get it to Eporsch?
MH82
I'm going to try and forget about it, though to be fair they never call me back so it's quite easy to forget about. Will have to enjoy the wife's car instead
MH82
Ok, so to close this thread out. porsche Brooklands have sorted it. Turned out to be a split hose. They expected it to take 3.5hrs to sort and fit new part, I've been assured that it actually also took 11.5. I also had them retrofit cruise at the same time as doing a long trip down to the med next month, and they also replaced the broken boot release buttons. I'm about happy with the 1500 all in cost. Please don't tell me if I have been ripped off.
Menoporsche
Glad it's sorted and good luck for your trip down to the Med.

MH82
It was a shame that it stopped showing symptoms when I took it to eporsche, but given that they were talking mid June anyway at that point for booking in, and the impending trip away, it needed to get sorted sooner rather than later. Revolution Porsche charge nearly £500 just for the cruise fitting... if you thought the bill was going to be a grand anyway that seems good to me!
