There is a tiny hole on the bottom of the gearbox casing where you can put a borescope camera and see the nut on the end of the IMS. There is also a part number around the nut. If your lucky you can determine which IMS you have.

Have you done this on your previous cars? How many of them had the bigger bearing, if any?

Out of my 3 987s, all 05 plates, the first one had the newer larger internal bearing. The second had already been done and the third I had done under my ownership

Don't upload directly to forum, use a hosting service like Imgur or Flikr or similar, then paste the link.

That works :)

I hope it's delivery rather than recovery!

Nope, that was the AA picking it up from my house and taking it to my work

Oh god, this is why I'm never able to keep a car for more than 5 mins lol.

Everything is for sale. Feel free to PM.

All fixed. Coil pack on no.6 had failed. Replaced and tested and then replaced the other 5 as a precaution.

Nice one!

Was coil 6 all cracked? and did the others show signs of deterioration?

Makes you wonder if the seller was getting rid of 'cos of the coil pack issue when hot and thought  he was in for a bigger bill?

All were cracking.

I don’t think owner was doing that. He’d just spent out on new brakes and new Goodyear tyres. Another couple hundred on ignition coils wouldn’t have worried him. Genuinely think it was just bad luck and the first time in ages the car has been on a long journey.

All done now so so no worries. Also replaced the near side AC rad which was leaking and inspected the IMS and good news.... it’s the internal bearing which cannot be changed and is much more reliable anyway. So no need to strip the gearbox out. RMS is bone dry as well and clutch feels fine.

Still need to do the minor service and check all the brake lines properly (forgot today)

Does your engine number match the info posted up in the IMS  sticky with regards to the type of bearing?

Yes. 62.507291

That sticky says anything after 504095.

Oh yes, there has been the odd “spare Porsche” and “mistake Porsche’” in our litany of errors.

possibly my biggest mistake was selling my Basalt Black one.

Cheers, nice to get some confirmation that accurate info may be out there for these. Cheered me up, mine's a later one according to that!
