986 with short shift

Depends on whether you like it or not. I love the 997 shifter and plan to fit one to mine. I have experience of driving a 986 with a short shift and it felt too tight and notchy for me - I much preferred the original. It sounds like you are not a fan of the setup in the grey car. I am sure you could find some other examples for similar or cheaper prices that are in equivalent condition.

How much do you think your car would fetch outright? Even if you only sold it for £1.5k (surely you would get more?!), adding another £4.5k gives you a pot of £6k to play with and we (well, I would) would be happy to scrutinise any other 986s you had in mind.

The problem is I don't have £4.5k. I was hoping to have £3k and maybe at an absolute squeeze push to £4k. WBAC offered me £1650 so I would hope to get £2k min trade in.

However events may have clouded the issue and I may have less than I thought.

I've been debating what to do with my 986S and have found that whenever I've gone somewhere to look at other cars and mention trading the 986 in more than once I've been told something along the lines of "you'd do much better selling privately than trading in with me". One trader suggested I should take the WBAC value as a good gauge of best trade in value on a 986 as most dealers/traders aren't interested in them. Sorry to burst your bubble a bit...

You'd be better off selling yours on here. Or you and I do a swap. :D

Very nice car but my budget just now could not even stretch to the £4.5K plus my car never mind this level.

No worries you know what man maths are like,  set a budget at 5k then look at 10k cars trying to justify it

That's how I got in to this mess, good old man maths.

But you know what they say, you have to drive a few to know wither you have a good one or a bad one.

I don't suppose anyone would test drive it for me so I can get a second opinion on its short shift stick.

It's very near me (I love in Hanborough) so if you are still interested in it, I'm happy to take a look. I have a 997 shifter on mine and its great

I'm still interested but not in a hurry as I need to see out another little financial issue before any new toys.

If you can have a look at it that would be great.

Went to look at a black 986 3.2s in Coventry on Sunday. Clutch was incredible heavy and brakes useless. Previous owner bought February 2019 and immediately px it against a similar 986.

I'm definitely walking away from this one.

So this morning my 986 2.5 passed its mot with two advisories on part worn rear tyres.

So now I have the dilemma of should I keep her and start splashing cash on her or trade up.

She's going to need a lot of cash to fix but most are cosmetic issues, wheels, calipers, rear windscreen, stone chips, seats, arm rest hinge, etc. The main issue is the dead central locking ecu.

Better the devil you know.

Cosmetics can be done as and when. CL ECU is not that big a deal if you use a good specialist.

@Paul chocks, do you recall what had been done to yours prior to your ownership? New CL ECU, key (just the head) and programming?

At Least you know whats up with yours and what you want to do to it. Some of the issues you could probably do yourself. How long have you had your 986? if relatively only a short time, just keep using it and do bits and pieces as and when. Unless you get cast iron guarantees (they are up there with hens teeth) with a new purchase, there is always risk  and reading between the lines I think you are in a bit of doubt wether or not you really want to change?

Mines got issues (then again so have I) just going to take my time and work through them while still enjoying the car and the experience of trying to improve it.😋

I've had her nearly two years now and I do have the 3.2 itch which is why I have not done anything to her.

Unfortunately most if not all the cosmetic issues needs to be looked at by someone a lot more skilled than me.

The quotes I have heard about from specialist fixing the ECU have been in the £12-1300 range where as an OPC I was told should quote £6-700 if no further complications.

You say you have the 3.2 itch.  Is that for power or badge?  If it is for power then the 987 2.7 had 240bhp which is 40 up on yours and not too far short of 986S territory.  You also get the 5 speed 'box which was a lot better than the 6 speed Getrag.

If you want a smooth 6 speed then you need to look at 55 plate 987s and later as they swapped to a much nicer Aisin unit.

Unfortunately they are way outside my pay grade.

I might be able to pull together £4k plus mine which I hope to get at least £2K for.

But yes the power and the badge.

Patience is key.  Your car fund will grow and from Sept. prices will start dropping.

Yep in car terms summer is almost over, prices will drop

People say this every year, but if prices do drop at all (I don't think they do) it isn't by much, certainly on the cheaper cars anyway.

My car fund never grows as I always find something else to spend it on. My current car fund is how much I think I can max out my 0% cc to.

Then pretend you've maxed it out now and put the monthly repayments for it in the bank. :)
