981 Service Intervals

Hi all,

Hope everyone is well?

Recently I've been getting in car display that an interim service and oil change is due however the car was last serviced 8 June 2017 with an engine oil change done already. What I understand from Porsche's service intervals are the first service is 2 years after manufacture or 20,000 miles (whichever comes first), then repeat after every 2 years and 20,000 miles.

Here's some details of the car with what was done during the first service in June 2017:

Car manufacture date - April 2016

Service was performed on 8 June 2017 at 5,595 miles (Intermediate maintenance, maintenance, spark plug replacement, drive belt checked/replaced, engine oil change)

Current car milage is 11,489 miles

What's everyones recommendation? Reckon I should get it serviced or just leave it until June 2020 for the 4 year service or when the car gets to 20,000 miles (whichever comes first)?

My thinking is it's 2 years this month since the first service however I've only driven the car under 6,000 miles since the last service.

Thanks for reading!

I would get the oil changed.  It ages over time and if you aren’t using the car a lot then there can be a build up of “stuff” that would possibly be burnt off an a more used car.

As to service.  When it comes to selling it a missed service will stick out like a sore thumb in the history.

Talk to dealer / Indy but oil and service seems sensible to me.

Thanks Paul P! I'll take out the 2 year/20k basic service and oil change. Then I guess next year I'll do the 4 year/40k service of everything listed under that which should bring the service back on track.

I would get it serviced now and then wait for the next time it asks (so 2021) rather then bringing the next service forward, but that’s certainky better than skipping one

I would also look at the service extras, eg brake fluid, belt and air filters

I agree. These are picked up in the service schedules which should be followed

OP. Have you worked out what got damaged in the impact? Was is rad or coolant pipes. I am still wondering what hit / how hard it was hit you to cause the issue since I would imagine it would have to be significant to break something.

Hi all,

Thanks very much for all the replies - much appreciated!

So I rang up the East London Porsche dealership (my nearest dealer about 10 mins away) and annoyingly they want to charge me £740 for the service when the Porsche website says the fixed price service is £615.

Anyone have any dealerships they recommend?

Thanks!

Where are you in London? Run down the A21, Tonbridge have a good reputation I thought.

East London. Just gave Tonbridge a call and they're quoting me £615 which is great. It'll take me just over 1 hour to get to Tonbridge so sounds like a day out in Tonbridge or a long gym session whilst I wait for the car to be serviced if I go there, however problem is their next available date is 11 July.

I'll need to call around surrounding areas for a shorter window I guess, ideally this Saturday 😕

If they don't think up another £600 worth of work once they actually have the car I'll be surprised.

+ 1 for Tonbridge - fall back South London (Sidcup) - they are keen to make an impression (only been open just over a year) and will offer discount for club membership - labour rate cheaper than East London.

Recently had a bunch of work done - all to quoted price, with the only addition being a seized belt tensioner - quote as +250 - actually charged +145 (they applied some "interesting" discount) - and i drive their 718s around for 2 days, after being told - "have this, have some fun and bring it back with the same amount of fuel in it" - 280 miles in 2 days was plenty of fun!

They also undercut 2 local indy's by more than 150 for cruise control retrofit.

Wrong thread, maybe. If you mean the thread I started http://www.BoXa.net/forum/topic/82699-why-cant-people-take-more-care-when-parking/ then no news yet. Waiting for the repairer to let me know what they've found and what they intend to do to fix it.

Oops and yes that was the thread I meant  that will teach me to use the phone instead of the laptop.

Good shout for Sidcup. That’s more closer to me than Tonbridge so will make sure i’ll give them a call today.

How does everyone feel about taking their pride and joy to an independent Porsche specialist for a service? There’s one in Neasden, NW London but can’t find any reviews.

Many are very happy to, the only issue is if you have an official Porsche warranty. The indie can still do the work but have to use all OEM parts I think.

My 3 year warranty expired in April 2019.

Yes, i won’t be comfortable giving the car to any old indy garage. Definitely Porsche OEM parts and definitely needs to be a specialist. Found a few that say they are within London for like £300 for a minor service... seems too good to be true?!

I think I remember talk of a respectable one in Vauxhaul.

Put up a new thread in Dealer Talk asking for recommendations around East London, you should get a few replies and experiences.

I'm still under warranty, and I use Revolution for servicing and the required extras

The Indi has to be able to prove they bought and used genuine Porsche parts.  Thus a spark plug is £15 ea !

I'm in there next week for my minor service + PDK oil change + brake fluid change + air filters.

Thanks! Yes, I found one called RGA. Incomplete website though and garage is tucked away under a railway bridge... Judging a book by it's cover here (Which I know I should not!)

Yeh good shout starting a new thread!

Heard good things about Revolution but it's all the way up in Yorkshire which is way too far for me in London.

I'm in Bracknell, but I do have a girlfriend in Warrington so combine the two.

If I needed more urgent items addressed on my old 986, I used Eporsh in Bisley
