Hi all. Looking to purchase a 987 and have spotted this one. It has full history and has had new discs and calipers about 2000 miles ago. It's a one owner car and on good Michelins. What's everyone's thoughts? Thanks in advance.

seems pretty basic, and quite a strong price compared to some around.

Although they have already dropped the price £2k and its been advertised for 47 days, so might be up for a deal. The MOT history looks good - would expect it to come with a new MOT though as it only has a month left

On the plus side, we got my wife's car from Peter Vardy and they were good to deal with

Thanks for replies guys. This would be my first Porsche so all comments welcome. Went to view it yesterday and it drives well. Seems like a good car but they're not for budging on price as Mattman42 thought they might and they're giving me a rock bottom price for my Z4. What would it's next service cost from an Indy?

Seems a bit pricey to me... but looks ok.

My local Lancashire Indy (Cath Burrows) quotes £190/300+VAT for a minor/major service. Assume the prices are still current, but seems quite low. Another local (Jasmine) is £225/475.

How do you know the MOT history, I can't see a registration number?

I have bought a car from Vardy's too and find them a pain to deal with, be careful!

The car is listed on Cargurus.co.uk - that shows how long the car has been up for sale, any price changes and the reg - quite useful when the traders try to hide regs! :)

We bought a brand new Evoque from Vardy's Land Rover arm so may have well had a different experience to other branches.

There are some items that are “outside” the usual major / minor services.

so you want to see evidence of

engine air filter (6yrs/60k)

serpentine belt (4yrs/40k) I think

plugs (same)

brake fluid every two years.

Not sure about manual gen 2 but also check if it needs a gearbox oil change. If it does it was probably 6yrs

that age and mileage.  Look at the inside face of the disks all round. Prone to rusting and seems to happen more on lightly used cars.

would recommend a specialist inspection because you can get some early wear on suspension components and also there’s the “Rev ranges” to look at.  Google it for more details but the ecu records if the car has had over revs in certain rev ranges (normally a bad downshift). Porsche make a big deal about it and like all these things there are plenty of cars that have “bad” rec range reports that are fine. And there are those that have horror stories.  911virgin have a good write up on this particular thing.

I agree with others that it’s “strong money” for a relatively low spec car.  But it looks good and if they can’t show history for the service items then get a quote from a local Indy to have them done and then you have a lever to argue the price.

if they offer to service it make sure that they are doing it to spec and not just changing the oil and that they are equipped to reset the service reminder.

general advice. There are plenty out there.  Buy on history rather than mileage and give yourself a must have / nice to have / don’t care / not that “colour” or whatever list and keep looking.

and don’t talk yourself out of getting one.  It will be the most smiles per gallon you will get.

Another view.

It’s an 8 year old second hand car, it’s not a new car, at 8 years old it could be the equivalent of a £3-4,000 Fiesta, what in the way of faults or short comings would you live with were you to buy one. So far in its life it’s previous owners have sucked up almost a £1 per mile for each of its driven miles in depreciation and servicing.

For 987.2 cars the manufacturers servicing is every 2 years, or let’s say 20,000miles whichever were to come first.

First service at 2 years, (20,000m) whilst under warranty oil, filter & cabin filter.
Second service at 4 years (40,000) as above, add engine air filter and plugs.

Third service at 6 years (60,000m), as the first but change the auxillary belt,

Now at 8 years ish, if serviced in accordance with schedule, rinse and repeat as above, as second service at 4 years.
Porsche don’t list brake fluid but recommend it every 2 years, so add that to each of the above

Seems easy, but the car in question has only done 30k miles. So what was actually necessary - oil & oil filter (say) yearly/10k miles, brake fluid every 2 years; cabin air filter in an open car - oh yeah; engine air filter every 40k; plugs OK for 40k not so for 60k; aux belt - it drives the water pump, alternator, PS pump OK for 60k not so for 80k. So out of that list, for the car in question, what was ‘necessary’ to do and what was merely on the service schedule?

What the above doesn’t list, i.e not what was done historically but actually how the car is now. Tyres (say) 10-15k rears and 15-20k on the fronts, so when were they changed/ how much depth is left; brakes - at 30k the pads may be OK but the inner faces of the discs will be shot, allow for the eventuality of discs (plus pads) for the next MoT. Economic factory design: will be rusted exhaust clamps; could be quietly rusting front hose fittings; rotting a/c & water radiators; maybe sometime gear change cables; if it’s a Moll battery assume sooner rather than later. Others can chip in.

All in all, nothing that money won’t fix or continue to fix.

In common with the other comments above, determine what are genuine must haves and what would be nice. Enjoy the chase as ‘your’ car will be out there somewhere.

I paid about £30,000 for a truly mint 22,000 mile PDK 2011S about 18 months ago. After looking at several. It was pricey, but the best car by a long way. A really nice example will always command a premium. And it's nothing like fully loaded.

Hi Mate,

I’m not sure of your budget but it’s well worth looking at the above car I’ve just posted. It’s my old one that I part exchanged last month. It’s an excellent car with nothing wrong with it, a very comprehensive history and had lots done to it.  Pm me for details if you’re interested.

Looks very good, and the £5k saving can go a long way to a contingency fund or holiday - depending on what you tell SWMBO 😂

Is Cath Burrows still open? I’m struggling to find a website and contact details.

Yeah, see what you mean, I can no longer see her website either. Number I had was 01257 425514, but I’ve not tried it in the last three or four months (when she did my brakes)

I think @K.I.T.T. uses Cath, might be able to comment on what he thinks.

@johnk1946 Spoke to her about three weeks ago. The number above is correct - 01257 425514. Also 07594 287966.

Not sure what's going on with her website though. Just dropped her an email to find out.

To add to the above, she replied saying her website is down. A new one is in the works.

You can also contact her via email at cath@cathburrowsporsche.co.uk

Thanks for that. Not due a service until later this year, I’ll give her a ring😊

I'd question everything from Peter Vardy in detail. Was after a BMW X5 for my wife last year and found one at their dealership, The advertised milage...typed and photographed was just over 12,000 miles less than what was stamped in the service history book on two occasions, when i questioned about the mileage discrepancy and asking who'd 'clocked' the car, I was told someone would call back.....strange, nobody did call to sell me the car........
