Insuring modified 981

Has anyone experience of trying to insure a modified Boxster? By modified I mean things like plenum change, sports air filters, exhaust upgrade and an electronic tune? Plus upgrading the brakes.

I was contemplating such upgrades but the increase in the cost of insuring the car is putting  me off!

Yes, about 10 years experience and with everything you list and more.

The premium didn’t lift by much and given how I use the car I’ve never felt the revised premium was unreasonable.

This year’s premium is circa £800 which might have a few gasping but this covers bigger engine, bespoke map giving an 80bhp power uplift (with a target total of 110/120bhp once the induction upgrade happens), uprated brakes, bespoke suspension, transmission upgrades, summer/winter/track tyre and wheel sets, upgraded audio plus various other odds and sods. Me and mrs_map and a great mate as named drivers all covered for SD&P plus unrestricted work use excluding commercial travelling and hire/reward mileage estimate at 15k pa and unlimited Euro cover with a simple phone call to confirm individual stays longer than 30 days.

As @Scubaregs says you may need a specialist broker - don’t bother with online quotes: total and utter waste of time.

@JohnSyn If you’d like to know about more about my specific mods and the way I went about organising cover just PM me your mobile and we’ll set up a call.

Hope this helps.

Done all these mods across 2 986. My premium is about £350 on an agreed value too. My C55 with engine and gearbox remaps and exhaust mods was £500 in 2015 with from memory mirrored no claims. Locktons and Sky have been my last 2 insurers. Tempted to try Aviva for a quotation next month as 2 other cars are with them.

The other thing you need to look at is whether you want parts like for like replacement. Just because you are insured for mods and they are all declared does not automatically mean that they will be replaced on a like for like basis.

I wouldn’t rule out all of the more mainstream insurers.

Although I've only got a few non bhp increasing mods, I found Aviva very helpful on the phone, and much cheaper then the specialists I tried.

thanks for the info Ed. They wanted more to  insure the worked on car than I paid for the 991.2 GTS! I'm hoping my chat with @map will give me some assistance on this. Its not the cost per se, its desire to feel I'm not paying too much for something.

Thats interesting as its Aviva, through a broker, that I'm currently insured with. I'll ask again.

Sorry @map I should have said. if that was the cost I would be very happy. The figure I  got quoted was nearly half as much again!

I'm with Manning for my Boxster and Mini.

The Mini is remapped and incurred a premium loading of 1% per BHP increase.  The torque increase was much larger than the power increase but that was not a consideration in terms of premium.

With Manning you get to speak to/email someone sensible - I've used them for a few years now.

Have a word with the insurance sponsors on the forum.  A Plan are there, as is another.  They're usually more likely to be enthusiasts when they target forums.

Living in sarf London made it difficult/expensive for me to get insurance on my modified TVR compared with friends who live more out of town and the same or greater modifications.

Luckily I live in the Dartford Brough council/Kent area so my postcode is, I think, less likely to attract a higher premium

@JohnSyn Hi John, check your post code against that list. I have checked the post code of two friends who have very highly modified cars and they are A category. No problem with significant modifications (Including turbo and roll-cages - things insurance companies refused for me when I researched) and reasonable premiums. Bromley isn't that much further in than Dartford but I am now D* which seems to apply loading for modifications and high premiums for specialist schemes, whilst insisting on the car being garaged. The exception being with Churchill who are HQ a couple of miles away and insure my 996 for nearly 50% less than the specialists and I have business use and can leave it in the garage, drive or road.

Thanks Barry thats helpful. We are, like you, in zone D on the list you provided. I had a great chat with @map on Saturday and got some really good pointers about getting insurance. I've got a little time before I decide whether to go ahead with the mods so can ring around.

Hi John, it’s Graham, not Barry! There are certainly a few options out there.
