Stereo update (Apple CarPlay)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. Apologies if this has been answered before (a cursory search didn't come up with anything) I'm looking for an upgrade to the existing PCM unit in my 2013 Bose equipped 981, primarily to add Apple CarPlay. What have people done?

I'm aware of the Joyauto update, which would at least retain the other related PCM related functions, but what about other stuff? Do any other options retain the Nav functionality in the dash, or the park assist functions? Not sure I need them, but it would be good to know...

Is there anything I should be wary of?

For the Joyauto unit, does anyone know of an installer in the NW England area?

Cheers

I’ve seen a “usb dongle” which claims to be compatible on eBay for about £50 or so, says something about downloading software into the PCM though...  Seems to good to be true so I’m assuming it is, unless someone can confirm otherwise.

Hi Rob, I’m pretty sure those cheap USB dongles are to run Apple CarPlay on Android headunits, which the 981 isn’t.

Can you tell I’m also going to convert mine at some point?  The most local supplier to UK is from the Channel Islands, I’ll try to find it and post up.

it looks diy to me so long as you have time and can be careful with the trim, I’d be buying a few of the trim removal tools to help.

Thanks for that clarification... so compatible with the 981 as long as you've changed the head unit already then...

Whilst the Joyeauto looks the business, I'd be terrified of botching something - a piece of trim that never goes back properly, doing something expensive to the existing head unit... it's my usual thing, all thumbs and no fingers. Joyeauto do make it look straightforward on their videos though.

The joyeauto upgrade is doable. I did it, circa £300 including import duty. Problem I had was i don't have an iphone. I (they) couldn't get the android auto side of it working consistently (Returned it).

@Withy fitted it and is using the apple play successfully atm.

NM can be fitted by several car audio specialists, I used an outfit in west London recommended by NM - why don't you search for NM and then make contact, they are very helpful.

Don't have info on Joy, I'm sure it's different, but a search of this site should provide more info

Hi Andy.

Please excuse my ignorance but dose this bit of kit give you a better sat nav than the oem one I have in my 981 at the moment ? (year 2012)

anyone know which Island in the Channel Islands ? ie Guernsey or Jersey.

Much easier to change the head unit on a 986 than a 981!

I can assure you that replacing the standard head unit on a 986 with a double din nav unit (especially the 2003 model V6reu has) was damn difficult compared to this 981 mod.

Having to remove the head unit, amplifier, move the aircon controller, add the new amplifier and wiring, microphone, satnav aerial, reverse camera let alone all the difficulty of fitting a double din into a larger porsche opening and adapting all the wiring and car aerial.

I don't doubt what you say but my statement was that a headunit swap on the 981 (by a mere mortal) is more difficult, probably all but impossible, due to the level of integration into the rest of the car's systems. I'm not trying to make light of the swap in a 986 but at least it can be done.

Here's a video guide, fiddly as these things are but not hugely difficult:

Thanks for that may come in handy one day after i'm out of Porsche Warranty  !!

Anyone seen the news from Porsche on the PCCM Plus hardware time give older models CarPlay?

Won’t fit the bill for 981 but wonder if they’ll roll out something similar for these soon??

Unlikely. They only do these things for what Porsche consider a ‘Classic’  As of now that is most things up to 9x6. You’ll have to wait for the 9x7 to become a Classic before they get to the 9x1.
