Which 3 Mods/Spec 986 Options Do You Appreciate The Most & The Mod/Spec Option You Wish Had

Just did a search and couldn't find this anywhere. So thought with 986 prices rising thought I'd start a thread which could be useful to new buyers and existing owners. Given everyone's baseline spec is going to be different thought I'd start with these 3 I appreciate the most for me:

Heated seats - baseline spec for me

Glass back window - BAS retrofit 

Zunsport grills - retrofit post condenser replacement

Cruise control (I retro fitted mine) for the distances between decent driving roads.

Air con

Litronic xenon headlights

Best thing I've done : Refreshed suspension (did mine last year - major solution to all the knocks, rattles and squeaks)

As a 550 mine has all the spec you need me can get but the best things for driving enjoyment are actually mods:

Replacement dampers/springs 

Sports manifolds, sports cats, Carnewal combo 

Uprated brakes (pads, ducts, lines, fluid)

On my earlier standard car I'd might swap one of those for the modified 987 or OE short shifter. 

The other one that didn't quite make the list is alu pedal set. The spacing makes for me heel and toe better. 

I wish I had GT3 seats (then circa 325bhp 😁)

I almost added my recently installed 997 OE shifter (recommended by @edc at a Blackbushe meet last year) to my list of 3 things I appreciate but I've only driven it just over a mile back from my specialist so far :D

My 3 favourite options as factory fitted are:

Extended/Full Leather

Climate Control

Litronics

- also have heated seats but reckon being able to see where I'm going in the dark is more important than a warm chair....

 

Factory extras that would be nice include:

Cruise Control (pre-COVID I drove 12/15k miles annually) - easy retrofit so on the list.

 

Easy fit stuff I have added that made a big difference to the enjoyment of the car includes:

Apple CarPlay

CAE Shifter

Factory Hardtop

Alcantara steering wheel retrim

Factory RTS (Roof rack)

Glass window roof

 

Stuff to add (wish list):

Focal speakers and general music upgrade

 

There are a mountain of other changes to my 986 but they're "out of scope" for this thread.

It's clear that everyone has different priorities, uses for their car, and base spec starting point which of course influeces the responses.

Favourite things:

Glass rear window.

Cruise control

Various interior bits and bobs (Tequipment(?) gear lever and handbrake, leather door cards, OEM look stereo with bluetooth etc.) otherwise the cabin can be a bit spartan.

997 shift mechanism.

(I know that's more than three...😀)

 

Things I wish I had:

Working air conditioning (!)

Litronics (standard headlamps, even with nightbreakers are really dim...)

I have a Continental head unit (TR 7412UB-OR)

I bought the harness and some vinyl Porsche stickers (yes sad...) from Bergvill and the head unit from e-bay. Sound quality is OK rather than brilliant but then again I've still got the original dash/door speakers and Nokia amp (no Bose)...

I'll dig out a photo of it in place and post later.

On the subject of OE looking HUs, I raise you all this:

As far as base spec goes, and in the spirit of keeping it to top three:

Soundpack (ie amplifier, and bass speakers in the doors)*
Climate control*
Heated seats

* = dealbreaker

Have mentioned items ranging from moderately hard, to nearly impossible to retrofit.

Soundpack, only so that you have the enclosures in the doors - the stock speakers / amp would be upgraded as per @map's suggestion. Use the car for commuting / long distance motorway stuff with the roof up, and I like my music.

 

Other options, but not dealbreakers, as relatively straightforward to retrofit:

986.2 spec four bar roof with glass screen
Litronics
Cruise
9x6 OE short shift kit / 9x7 shifter
PSE / bypassed exhaust
Some none-OE stuff

If not already present on the cars, they would eventually find their way on to the car, even if that means having to be overnighted from the Land of the Rising Sun.

What's the radio? Looks good from what can be made out in the dark.

No performance benefit but I think the radio needs some contoured buttons to better match the rest of the switchgear. The sharp squares slightly jar against the curved convex OE button shape. Also the early cars have the gloss finish as the facelift the matt finish. So many details to think about 😆

Do Litronics make that much difference? I find the standard with no clouding and upgraded bulbs pretty good tbh.  Although I think it makes a huge difference how cloudy your lenses are.

Yes. I had the Ring Xenon Max on my first Boxster now the Litronics. Just like going from halogen to HID or LED in most other cars. I swapped a 68 plate daily with halogen to a 12 plate with HID and the difference is very noticeable.
