Boxystar986
Hi to all. My 2001 S has been going a little bit loopy recently. It's alarm has been going off, usually in the early hours, the ignition switch has become difficult to use, the air bag light is on, the heater and AC fan won't work with the engine on, same for the headlamps and wipers, the central locking remote stopped working and finally the windows kept bouncing back until the battery went flat and they slowly went down, all on there little own! Every time I tried to disconnect the battery the alarm siren went off. HELP!!!
GmanB
Certainly sounds like the ignition switch is faulty, it's pretty common to go on these cars. Also, check under the passenger seat for damp. Odd things can happen when it gets wet in there. If it's wet unblock the drains, if you haven't done it and it's not damp, do it anyway. 999mch
I found out last week that you need the key in the ignition so all the lights are on, position 2?? And you can then disconnect the battery with out the alarm going off.
Paul P
The sequence for preventing the alarm sounding when disconnecting battery is ignition on, then off leave key in the ignition. the symptoms sound like a low battery , start there and see if the battery is simply low or is dying. But given the switch is difficult to operate than that is an area to look at as well as previously mentioned.
edc
Potentially dodgy ignition switch is also contributing to draining the battery.
the baron
As others have stated I second either ECU under passenger seat being wet, you will need to lift the carpet up behind he seat and feel the foam, if it’s wet, you have probably found your issue, if dry then a potential faulty ignition, but not heard it doing all the faults you list at the same time. Boxystar986
Ehm, I rather hope the second! It's at RPM Techik at the moment having a full inspection, hopefully they will get to the bottom of it! I did feel the carpet, and it was dry but I haven't had the car long so who knows, it could have been wet in the past!

As @the baron suggested often when this happens the carpet itself seems dry but if you pull it up the foam will be wet. Good luck getting the car sorted. Boxystar986
Well gentlemen, it turns out it is the ignition switch but whether it's the lower easy one of the actual barrel I don't know yet! The excuse for a dealer who I bought it from blamed me for breaking it, unbelievable! If it is the barrel I know about the paper clip trick on how to get it out, but does anyone know how far in the paper clip goes? Also, I thought the small hole was at the bottom of the barrel as you sit in the car and look at it! Mines at the top and I'm just not having any joy getting it to come out! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Car goes in to have the bottom switch replaced on 11/11/21. Also car is now leaking somewhere on the near side but as yet I can't tell where it's getting in! I have cleaned all the drainage tubes out front and back but none were blocked! I'm loving boxster ownership again, I really am,not!
Elmer Fudd
Check for splits/holes in the foam drip tray where the hood retracts into, and make sure the door liner behind the card is intact as this is also a water seal.

I changed mine a couple of months ago, you put the paper clip in , then put your key in and turn it,that then aligns a further hole further down the barrel, which the paper clip then has to go into as well , once the clip has gone into the 2nd hole it pushes a pin in which allows the barrel to drop out
Boxystar986
Cheers dunks, I'll try that tomorrow!
Elmer Fudd
You'll need to move the hole down to 7 o'clock position to get it to work, just put the clip in and slide it down.

Boxystar986
Hi Menoporsche, having only one useable arm then the answer would be yes. But I'm only trying a dry run at the moment, the dealer, if you can call him that, is changing the switch first, I'm preparing for the worst. Please forgive my ignorance, but I presume that with a new barrel I will have to get the keys programmed to the new transponder? Are there any mobile guys that do that? I live in Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire! Any idea of the cost?
Boxystar986
Thanks Iborguk, it was very interesting! Cheers.

You shouldn't need a new barrel, in fact if you're just changing the electrical switch at the bottom, you don't need to remove the barrel. Boxystar986
Okay thanks. It does go in for a new ignition switch 8/11/21, I'm just trying a dry run just incase!
