andygo
My Cayman is covered by the much vaunted Porsche Warranty on a used car. I noticed a bit of an exhaust 'flutter' on tickover which on closer investigation, proved to be coming from each exhaust manifold to rear section flanges. When I bought the car last July I noticed that the four notoriously corrosion prone flange bolts had recently been replaced with normal nust and bolts, not the standard splined bolts. I was passing my local (ish) OPC today and popped in to discuss rectification. It's booked in for mid April with a loaner. However the lady on reception, charming as she was, seemed unable to confirm whether or nt it was a warranty job or not. Apparently if it's down to corrosion it's my cost and up to the tech to decide.. I don't really want to leave the car (for a day!) to be told I owe the OPC £200 or whatever. Has anyone had any experience of this issue with an OPC?
Scubaregs
£200? 😂 They will call it corrosion all day long, point out the non standard bolts and quote you the annual GDP of a small country to fix. If you can get the bolts loosened, buy the correct ones and "hot" bolt it.
andygo
Yes, but as far as I can tell, the bolts are 6 months old or so. Isuspect when they have removed to old corroded bolts, the flanges have been bent slightly, meaning at the midway points (eg 6 and 9 o"clock for example) on the flange, the gasket isn't compressed sufficiently, causing the gasket to delaminate. It's so frustrating, not being able to talk to someone who knows at the OPC. Edited March 20, 2023 by andygo
Simo_UK
Exhaust bolts not a warranty claim unfortunately. "Corrosion" or "wear and tear". Which is outrageous as it's clear this is an design/engineering oversight (ie, how many other cars have you had to do this on in the past!?!). Either way, if you've not had the car long you might have a case to argue. Otherwise it's approx £500-600 from the OPC. About half that for an indie (I used Brookspeed, maybe cheaper from an exhaust specialist. Or DIY.
Carmand
I think you’ll struggle with a warranty claim to be honest - as with a number of areas on “modern” Porsches unfortunately low quality parts have resulted from the cars being built to a cost. Clearly not fit for purpose in the first place but you’d probably have to take them to court to get anywhere. A couple of years back I asked for one of the metal cable ties that holds heat shield material round the exhaust to be replaced whilst it was in for service as it had rusted right through. I didn’t really mind if it was under warranty or not - until they came back and said Porsche don’t sell the cable tie as a part and it would require the whole of the back end of the exhaust replacing! Porsche would helpfully contribute as the car was under extended warranty but it would be £1500 please…the Service Manager was so embarrassed about the situation that he fitted a stainless steel clip for me without charge. The other side has since gone and I’ve done that myself 🙂 I’m guessing my exhaust bolts will need doing eventually - I’ve not seem anyone offering improved replacements, seems a bit silly to replace with OEM that will only fail again eventually but like your discovering it does seem you need the proper interference fit items that won’t damage the pipe or gaskets. daz05
The warranty cost on the 981 is quite reasonable to be honest for peace of mind if you drive often and can't do your own repairs then it is probably worth every penny. Unfortunately many of the common issues will not be covered, water damage from drains, exhaust bolts, air con rads (no longer covered), caliper bleeders, it might not be long until the dealers refuse the seized PSE valves if it is deemed as corrosion. iborguk
I was quoted £900 by an OPC three years ago to get this addressed, I politely declined. Find a decent Indy who has experience of doing this work. Bit of a drive for you but Steve at this place did mine https://www.gosshallwerks.co.uk I supplied the parts which were ballpark £35 at that time, took him 2.5 hours and it was about £220 labour (again about three years ago). zagamuffin
Ill go against the grain and suggest they passef the car onto you with a warranty with non std bolts so they are liable , i guarantee if you brought the car in for 111 check with non std. bolts they would refuse warranty , ask to speak to service manager , always got great service from Porsche Dublin guy
