Rear Exhaust decision - OEM or Toyo/similar

it really depends how you use the car. the cheap £200 toyosport ones sounds terrible when you start the car up. it sounds terrible between 2000rpm and 3000rpm and its droning. but then above 4000rpm it sounds heavenly, especially with the roof down. proper naughty rasp when you blip the throttle for a downshift too.

so... for a daily driver, that ever does any cruising, then no. but if its a weekend car or a track day car more interesting in chasing the redline, then yes definitely.

the toyosport exhaust is also a lot lighter than the standard exhaust (cos there isnt much to it) - that and the spare wheel out the front probably saves 30kgs if thats of importance to you.

though, that said, i did once take the missus away for the weekend, in a 986 with a cheap exhaust on - it was tolerable on the motorway, just have to keep the revs over 3000rpm.

and yes, the cheap exhaust is a decent chunk louder than standard. but again, suitability depends on how you use the car.

The closest you will get to OE without spending all the money for a Porsche one is a Dansk exhaust, best price usually seems to be from, Tech 9 - Porsche Specialist Liverpool, Cheshire, North West (tech-9.co.uk)

No affiliation, not even as a customer.

Does anyone know if Ghert at Carnewal can modify the Dansk exhaust back box like he does with the standard back boxes ? I have heard a couple of Boxsters with the Carnewal mod and I thought they sounded brilliant

I recently fitted a Toyosport to my 986.

I put a pair of Drone killers in it and it’s fine. Still makes a decent noise and I detected no difference in performance.

At a recent Porsche 75th birthday BBQ I met another 986 owner who Also fitted a Toyosport and had had no complaints.

Another voice of agreement with previous replies.

I've got the eBay box. Was fitted by a previous owner. It does sound great when opened up, but drones like hell on a cruise.

The sound that annoys me most is a kind of tinny rasp it makes around town. Reminds me of when we were kids and some dudes would put huge back boxes on Vauxhall Novas. They always sounded a wee bit like the engine was struggling to fill the exhaust, if you know what I mean?

It's one of the things that's on my long to do list. I fancy a full Dansk system, but it's way down the priority list as it's not actually broken/rattling!

I've recently fitted a full Dansk system & I'm very pleased with it.

If I ever sell my 996, then the modifications will start on the 986. Carnwell is an option and I find myself being drawn to this item. Anyone here have any experience please?

Never heard one on a car but have seen them “on the bench” look reasonably well put together.

You probably know already but spyder operate out of the la rose site in Kemsing. If I remember correctly you aren’t that far away so you could probably go down there and have a look and a chat to them.

Well remembered that man! I called in this week and discussed this (£250+ vat fitting plus and and brackets and bolts required) and a couple of things.

I drove with an eBay special DroneMeister for about two years. My original exhaust was finished and I couldn't afford a new OEM or Dansk exhaust. I lived with the drone (from about 2,500 to 3,000 rpm) but can't say I enjoyed the experience. Anything above 3,000 and above it's fine. It sounds absolutely bloody fantastic above 5,000 and you just want to give it more. the more you push it the louder it howls. Just fabulous. It also blows out quite a bit of a silvery dust in the beginning (presumably the sound dampening inside the exhaust coming loose) but after about 200 - 250 miles it seems to settle down.

I tried the Dronekiller baffles but hated it. The whole car sounded like an asthmatic moped. it was so bad I drove straight back home during the test drive and took it out there and then. never put it back and just drove with the drone. You learn to drive around the rev range where it will drone too badly. On the motorway because I have a 5 gear 2.5 it was fine (if a little loud) because I kept it at 3,000 rpm. In a 6 speed it may not be so easy as I think you're going to cruise right around the rev range where it is at its worst.

It's liveable while you save up for a nicer exhaust, or until you can find a decent second hand one.

After two years I got hold of a second hand OEM exhaust (from Paul Lewis) and swopped that out. One of the guys on here took the dronebox off my hands and fitted it to his 2.7. Far as I know he still has it on.

I’ve got the Topgear back box on mine and like others above it sounds great when going for it but does drone on a cruise. I think they are all pretty much the same of that type of design. It does look good with the meshed plates under the boxes and seems well made.

I bought it cheap and was dissuaded from fitting it originally by Lee at Cotswold as he said it would drone. However my oem back box seems split so had Cotswold put it on whilst for the interim.

Any drone is sorted with the eBay Drone Killers. £8 is all they are so if you don’t like them its hardly an extravagant waste of money.

I’ve not noticed any detriment is performance with them fitted and they are easily removable if you want the full on sound.

  • 2 weeks later...

After 6 months Mrs. T has had enough of the drone from the “Chinese” exhaust, so I am going to try drone killers.  There are two sizes, approx. 8 or 14cm long in the 48mm diameter listed on eBay.

I realise this will not be a perfect solution, what size has worked best?

Thanks

Drone is a killer, it will only happen at certain speeds, usually motorway cruising speeds  and it becomes tiring. Not had it on the Boxster as I have stuck with OEM. I did have it on the 996 when I first bought it, changed to a Dansk exhaust within the first week, just couldn’t live with it.

I’m just having mine taken off my 2.7. It seems to be good quality and above 3k rpm it sounds awesome but 2.2-2.7k rpm it does drones a bit. Being valved when you shut the valves the drone is much reduced but still there a little. Didn’t want to play around with drone killers so going back to stock and will resell exhaust to raise funds for a second air con condenser :( and also thinking about a hardtop. Exhaust will be up for sale from Thursday if you’re interested in?

Is that a valve and a system or just a valve? Speaking with Carnwell, it appears that there are lots of options and they want to work on what I have rather than exchange?

I used the 14cm ones. Worked a treat.

I just couldn’t bring myself to spend over 25% of what I paid for the car on an exhaust.
