Why do private sellers think when you have not met them before, you are going to give them £500 as a deposit for a car, then drive away and come back 2 days later to collect a car that may not exist 🤔. Or do I just not trust anyone?

Why would the car not exist if you have seen it and put a deposit down?

Maybe its just me being untrusting, was going to look at cheapish 987 tomorrow, they thought i was getting the train to take the car away having never seen the car just photos, maybe I'm still old style. Told him I'd shake on it come back Saturday if all was good, said he wants 500 tomorrow and collect Saturday. Stalemate. Now he has blocked me, what does that tell ya, lol. Narrow escape.

Always trust your gut instinct. Particularly if you have a big gut :)

Agreed, doesn't sound like a seller you want to buy from. People make this process a lot more difficult than it needs to be - and you seem to find most of them :)

Dont I just, well at least it might help others in the process lol. Got another in the pipeline 2005 987 sports chrono fsh (seen the service book) 54k miles 8k seller has owned the car for last 6 years. Looks decent.

I'm always staggered that these cars change hands for such low prices. Mine's done 73,000, no sports chrono and I'd feel robbed if I sold it for 8K.

One can only figure it is an attempt at a scam or his phone is ringing off the hook with potential buyers and it takes £500 to ringfence your claim.  I know which of those scenarios is more likely near the end of October...  That side I've done a verbal deal with a trader recently that he'd contact me if another buyer came along,  who when I phoned to confirm I was coming down with the intention to buy just said someone walked in off the street and bought it since our conversation the previous day.  I was lucky enough to happen on a better car anyway.

I reckon you really need to decide exactly what you want, 986 or 987, tip or manual, standard or S and focus on that particular version.  Choice will be more limited but you are more likely to be satisfied with what you get but your search will be more focused.  If it is too far away or too much, wait and go to look at the next one.  At the moment you seem to be playing Whack-a-Mole.

Deffo whack something, lol. I've just come off 12 night shifts so maybe I just go into panic mode on my days off lol. Working rotating  nights restricts when I can see cars  which is a pain.

Replaced with a Stag that I still have and love 20 years later - and that sounds even better than the TVR.

The Stag does sound very good as standard and can be quite loud if you try. What colour is the Stag?

@Porschevirgin1968 what's your budget and where are you located? You seem to be taking a bit of a scatter gun approach to this...plenty of well respected specialist dealers around.

Possibly are plenty dealers around but living in Cumbria isn't helping I don't think. 10k max. My budget may not be enough I'm starting to think that. 🤔

Get what ever you want but the guiding principle explained to me when I went out searching for TVRs and generally very valid on a Boxster is that unless you buy from a known enthusiast or a tidy private sale, the principle is that if you can't afford an expensive one, don't buy a cheap one.

...just been reading about your ownership of that lovely 996 you owned until recently on the 911 forum.... great account sir.

Thank you very much. I have a good one on my new Boxster part written up when I get the chance.

Viewed a lovely early 996 today... really tempted!!!!

They (986 & 996) are lovely cars and the 911 is a true classic in many different versions. The new cars are probably faster and more sophisticated but for me, the early ones are better.
Get it bought. Its better to regret what you have done than what you didn’t do in my experience.
