Backbox rusted, time for aftermarket exhaust?

One of my backboxes has what feels like a reasonably large hole rusted through in it on the elbow of the box.  I've previously had them modified by PCW who do a Carnewal style mod so trying to decide whether it's worth 'saving' this and have it welded, or whether I should just bite the bullet and replace it with an aftermarket system.  Anyone got any experience with DesignTek / Topgear exhausts or similar?  Not too fussed about having it valved as would likely leave it open anyway 🙂.  Was pleased with the current setup as it gave it a pleasantly grunty sound without any noticeable drone.

I have the DesignTek valved system and think it’s brilliant. I have read that the non-valved versions drone a lot, so opted for the valved one. It’s louder and deeper toned than standard with the valves closed, and probably offensively loud when the valves are open (but good fun in tunnels). No regrets.

I replaced the whole of my exhaust last year. I chose Dansk to avoid drone. A very good outcome, a little louder than standard but subtle.Cost £2.5K . Money well spent.

Did you install yourself or pay a garage to fit it?

Installed myself, but paid for ramp access to make it easier. The exhaust itself went on easily, it took a bit more time to finesse the exact position of the tail pipes as I was being very fussy. I then plumbed in the vacuum pipes and electronics at home some days later. That was fiddly, but only because I took a while to work out where the vacuum sources are in the engine and to hide the wiring.

I have the Spyder performance valved that is the same as the two you mentioned,it was a lot cheaper .

I wouldn't recommend getting the old box welded because it's only going to be a temporary fix (double skinned) and I wasted my money getting mine done. Failed MOT shortly after because of it

If its the original box. I wouldn't bother.

Fitting the new one is easy enough especially as your old box has been off before so the studs have hopefully been sorted.

Haven't connected the valves yet and not sure I'll bother with it because I like the noise and fitted sound deadning ages ago so don't find any drone too bad tbh understand it might be a bit much on a long motorway run tho.

Good luck with it..

Fair point, I guess it depends how much I get quoted for a weld repair, if it tides me over for a year or so might be worth it.  think I’ve read previously that a lot of the ‘branded’ exhausts were all essentially the same - interesting.

Just had a look and Spyder says out of stock atm.. Basically was the same price as the standard box from elsewhere. They sometimes come up on their Facebook page on a discount or at least used to.. Same as you thought get the old box welded and took it to a local exhaust place that has a good reputation but mine was gone on top both sides so different to your situation. They had to remove the exhaust to weld after sorting out the studs cost £300 but wish I'd just got the new box and have them fit . Have a feel on the tops where they usually go just to make sure you don't have to deal with that in the near future as well.

I probably described it badly - it’s the topside that is the issue on mine as well, but only one side (at the moment at least). I’ve had the studs done on that side already so might give it a go as it should still come out reasonably easily.

Can you weld yourself? The guy who did mine clearly couldn't.. When I took it off to fit the new one is was shocking bird poo rusty mess and already blowing after a few weeks.. Don't know if its possible to do the inner and outer skin. The new one is so much better sounding than the standard non PSE..I can understand you already have it modded so different situation. Also the new ones not so asbo after its been on a while.would have been ok with the non valved but everything I read said go for valves but yeah maybe my sound proofing is the difference,

Drove a 981 recently from Aberdeen to Carlisle and was fitted a Top gear valved exhaust, had to swop cars and drivers as the Drone game a splitting headache …..Just saying!!

@987RG has had the tops of his boxes welded successfully to retain the original exhaust.

Still holding strong, it was rusted on both sides on the tops corners.

Interesting.I thought it could be different engines that made the difference in drone (mine 2.7)  YouTuber Joe talks cars has a 3.4 Cayman with one and loves it so I'm not sure.Hearing sensitivity maybe 🤔

Posted (edited)

So it turns out the holes (plural!) are slightly worse than I thought. Not sure whether it makes sense to bother having them welded or not at this point.

@987RG how bad were your corners when you had them done, can you remember roughly what it cost you?

Hopefully the photo will show up of my exhaust after repairs. The guy who repaired it only sent me the after not the before.

The garage that done the welding was just a regular independent garage (not Porsche specialist).

Cost was £120 and they had the car for a day and the welding was done in Nov 21. The car has only covered around 3k miles since and when cleaning I do make an extra effort to try to get to the tops of the boxes.

if the link above does not work, please search the following topic which has got the photo.
