Isn't this the point? Of course the newer car is better by score when talking to their focus groups and market sales projections. But, people value and weight different things and aspects of the respective cars differently.

    Absolutely 👍

  2. I’m in agreement with the OP, love the purity and now classic looks of the early 986 with ambers, the rest of the Boxster line doesn’t really interest me. Yes I have driven all the subsequent Boxsters and yes they have each improved on the previous model, but as far as looks and raw analogue driving it’s the early and original 986 for me.

I think as long as they get regular oil changes, the engines are good for high mileages. Mines done almost 160k without any major work, but expect the first thing to go will be something in the valve timing area such as chain guides/variocam.

Didn’t yours have some major work done in this area?

No, I thought it did and that was the remote diagnostic I got from Lee at CPS but when I got the car to him it turned out to be a sensor, so relatively cheap fix compared to what it could have been

@the baron who is at 210k + miles on his 986 swears by annual changes, which for him is no more than about 3k miles (Steve?) and the main thing is to use Porsche A40 standard oil. I get mine done annually which is about 5k miles.  Mobil 1 is the factory spec but is expensive for a low mileage car, Mobil Super 3000 also for frequent/low mileage changes gets a good review.  I'm sure others will add their thoughts very soon.

The newer the oil and the fewer heat cycles it has been through the better it will protect the moving parts.  Oil degradation is time, use and temperature related.

I use Mobile Super 3000 which Lee at CPS also uses.

i try to change my oil every 3000-5000, or if mileage is less then once a year.

im also adopting the same service routine on my recently purchased 996 C4 and did my first one over the Christmas holidays

i bought the Mobile 3000 oil (5-40) 10L, Mann oil filter and new sump washer and Mann air filter from Eurocarparts all for circa £100, took about an hour to do.

  5. If you at least remove the passenger seat you can check the ECU unit for water damage, these are expensive to replace and can write a car off if you use your insurance to make a claim

tgis will also allow you further access under the carpet to stuff more towels etc to help dry the foam out.

Next is the turn for the seat covers. Plan is to have the center parts upholstered in alcantara. Maybe it is time to learn how to use the sewing machine and the needle with thread...😅

Did you unstitch these or is that how they when you take off the seat?

Not Boxster specific, but the other day I bought a tube of Wurth Gummi Pflege to condition all the rubber seals on our menagerie of cars, and it does work very well on all of them.

It occurred to me that the softening effect might be useful on the windscreen wiper blades to overcome those "skipping, scraping, noise" issues that I seem to get when the wipers have been on for a while or if the screen has recently been "deep cleaned".

Was a bit concerned that it might put a layer on the windscreen causing smearing problems, but it doesn't and the softened rubber blades are now as quiet and efficient as they were when new.

Good stuff that Gummi Pflege ...

Bugger I’ve literally just bought new wipers for the Mercedes as it was doing exactly that, I’ve just used Gummifledge on my daughters hardtop. So it’s not like I’d have to order it….🙁

Did you ever manage to get the car for another emmissions test after replacing the MAF?

Would be interested to know if that solved the problem if you did.

    Thanks

He think he gave up on the car and is trying to sell if hasn’t already, however I maybe completely wrong 😑

  10. Just sold mine, I had the interior of the roof completely covered in alcantara, it was a beautiful thing.

if you can get one you will love the way it changes the dynamics of the car for the winter, however not everyone is of the same opinion.

@Pordave I did my 996 ones a few weeks back (were really yellow). The 3M kit worked really well for me.

I took a deep breath and went all out on them (removed / removed seals / cleaned - then used the kit on the lenses). Lights went from horrible yellowed mank to clear and looking like new!

Depends on your diy skills though - not for the faint hearted half way through and you could damage the lenses with careless application. Saying that if you follow the instructions I found it went really well.

That looks awesome, I’ve tried on my 986 and more recently with my 996 neither result looked like that, I might give it another go
