  1. Finally managed to change my front ARB bushes and drop links after various struggles last week. Took me most of the day but with helpful tips from forumites and previous threads I was able to remove the drop links and free up the ARB to get at the bushes. There was alot of corrosion around the bushes themselves - just look at the state of them:

No idea whether this affects performance but they've been there for 13 years afaik so a change can't be bad. Cleaned up the ' housings' as best I could with a wire brush etc This is the first real bit of mechanical work I've ever done on a car so very satisfying. :)

Been absolutely p*ssing it down here so no chance of a test drive to check out the effect on the knocking noises that prompted the changes.

Took ours on an 800 mile round trip to visit family and go to the Salon Prive Classic and Supercar show at Blenheim Palace.  It's the longest trip we've taken it on since we bought it last year.  It never missed a beat, lovely car :)

What was Salon Prive like? I've been thinking of going the last 2 years.

@red rocket You will need to remove the undertray at least as the anti roll bar bushes are held in with bolts that will spin unless the tray is removed. Front wheel arch linings come out in 2 minutes if you need .too,.The usual difficulty is undoing the drop links.

    OK thanks for the tips.

Not sure why you need to do that. I changed mine and they were really easy. I think I just took the wheel off each side and jacked up the hub to take the tension out (at the front). One side at a time. It’s a completely different arrangement to a 986 if that’s what you’ve looked at so far as they just come out the bottom. Obviously you may be talking about something else...?

    Great thread. Great idea.

Had a look a while back and access didn't seem too good. Figured if I take out the liners I'll be able to see what to do more easily.

it's scary when the bumper and wheel linings are sitting on the floor of the garage and you aren't 100% sure about how you're gonna get them back in!

Don't say that; got to take my wheel arch linings out some time in the next few days so i  can try to change the arb bushes.

I've been thinking about painting my bolts too. Any recommendations on a decent paint to use?

Hammerite as suggested by others. Don't go too thick or it will come off when you use a spanner on them; as I found out!

Just finished wiring and stalk work for cruise and odb in my 2001 986 S. My car seems to have newer model instrument cluster connectors blue, green and grey. Is it really so there is no wire required from DME to instrument cluster? Pelican proposes wire to black connector 17 - well there is no black connector in my instrument cluster.

Odb works fine but cruise light will not light up. Have not yet done test drive because of snow.

Car is import from Japan now in middle of snow in Finland.

Cruise is different on 986 so you'd be better posting in the 986 section. Might get more responses that way.

Depends on definition of reasonable - but I think they are about £45 from OPC - might not be much cheaper as/when one turns up at a breakers.

£45-50 for a bit of plastic = too much Porsche tax ! I'm not in a rush so I'll wait and see if anything comes up.

    Hi red,

Intrigued to know how you found the part/breaker in Holland ... and if they have another one 😁!

    Dave

Took me several days of extensive Google  searches using various versions of  part no's, with and without gaps, with and without dots and hyphens. Also tried various descriptions including Boxster, Cayman, 987, 997, cruise control stalk, switch unit etc. Also tried  German, Austrian and French eBay's using relevant languages!  The one I eventually found was easily the cheapest. There are several on American eBay which work out around £200-250 including import charges but obviously with risk attached (the cheapest has a wrong description and they didn't reply to my e mail asking for clarification.. There's a stalk available (possibly from Sweden) for approx £250 which came up on a parts website otherwise £275 plus delivery from Steve Strange on eBay.

    Good luck with the hunt!

  10. Now all fixed. Thanks to @Freeman for tips on how to remove the plastic stud and @Richard Hamilton who privided diagrams in reaponse to one of my posts on a PCGB forum. Once i knew what i needed to do it was relatively easy to get the switch housing off. For the moment i have modified it with a hacksaw and file to take the extra stalk; not perfect but good enough until i find a decent second hand one at a reasonabe price. 4 stalk switch unit arrived from a breker in Holland at half the price of what's available in the UK so cruise stalk installed and ready for coding at local indy.

There is a plug/stud that holds the wiring loom, I can't remember whether it connects to the cover or not. To realise it you have to press on the sides (they pop out to lock in position) then push it out.

OK thanks. That's what I figured but when I tried on Friday I couldn't shift it. I'll keep trying.

I don't know what connector you mean. Once I removed the cover I have attached the C.C stalk to its position, connected the cable and used some 3 letters word when I have tried to re-attach the new lower cover.

That's strange. There's a hole towards the front right corner with some sort of stud throught it and holding wiring in place above it. Said hole is clearly shown on parts diagrams. Sadly the stud isn't so i can't figure out what i have to do to shift it. Anyway i'll persevere.

There is also a 4th corner where the wiring is held onto the bottom cover.

There is probably a way to pop the conenctor out of the cover but I did not find it.

I have just added Cruise to mine - Richard kindly programmed for me.

I noticed that but couldn't figure out what if anything was attached. How did you remove the connector? I'm going to have to modify the cover so need to remove it completely.

lower plastic cover was a real pain to remove and then refit.

Guys, could use your help. Have a stalk assembly  on the way but i thought i would prepare by removing the lower cowl/cover. Managed to get the 2 screws out , one on each corner close to steering wheel, but it feels like something is still holding it. What am i missing? The upper cover is loose but the lower barely budges.

This is confusing - I noticed the new emojis yesterday, although on my PC they just appears as black & white outlines. On my android tablet they are in colour, but I don't see any differetn skintones there.

On a slightly different topic, I also noticed yesterday that in the settings for Facebook Messenger, you can select what skintone you want as your default for the 'thumbs up' emoji. Mine still seems to be set to a (perhaps culturally innappropriate) bright yellow ...

I'm using a Samsung android tablet. There's an option to select skin tone at the top, next to Categories
