  1. Tough to give advice without seeing them, big difference in miles I think it's probably worth the extra £2k all things being equal if it means you'll enjoy it more. Just watch out for big service items coming up on either before committing that could spoil the party.

  2. I can't recommend anything since we don't know exactly why they fail but something that protects the casing from water ingress can't hurt. I also removed and cleaned around the connector and added protection. That's what I have done and they are still original at least in my ownership (touch wood)

For info but if CMA is right then it's a waste of time.

Comparing their pics to mine, it looks like the threaded part may be longer for the 991

In which case it might work, it looks like it unscrews.

People shouldn't be afraid to try and repair these, I know it says not to open up the mount itself but you might find it's a bit of corrosion on the electrical socket or further in that's showing up as a short to ground error.

  4. If you honestly don't care about engine sound and manual is the most important part of the engagement the 718 2.0 6 speed really isn't a bad shout, they are a great steer otherwise.

  5. Mine is clean too 2013 car but it's always garaged and mostly driven in the dry. The first thing to corrode on them is the short brake pipes from the caliper to the next connection point behind the arch, if they are clean and original the rest of it should be ok.

I wouldn't be hung up on age if it's been cared for.

  6. Rare doesn't always mean more desirable, you don't have the typical popular when new but poorer performing alternative scenario with the 981, like for example the F430.  Pdk in the 981 is very like the pdk you will experience in a brand new 718 4.0.

I think you have a situation right now whereby a couple of sellers are trying to take advantage of the situation, punting it later won't be as easy and I can already hear the same sellers inhaling as they offer you a lower trade value because it's a manual.

Grab a Spyder instead, you will appreciate the extra torque in the 3.8 with a manual box since it has longer gearing than a pdk.

  7. There are at least 15 for sale on autotrader alone for you to base you assessment on the entire market.

I do like what the OPC is doing as an owner but someone will get burnt. Perhaps in the same way as what happened with the owner of the red one we were discussing, overpaid and now has to face the music.

The Cayman GTS seems to be priced below which is an oddity. (Although it's logical to me 🤣🤣🤣)

  8. Perhaps its obvious to say but I've said it before and will say it again, in terms of overall value, smiles per mile you won't beat a well spec'd and looked after 981 S, sitting somewhere in the £30-£35k range.

Even against the very lovely 718 4.0l, you don't miss out on £50k extra worth of improvement and even if depreciation hits hard you won't lose your shirt.

Yes most likely the tyre’s because the 718’s rear end is more planted and it’s a bit faster cornering otherwise .

Time to retract the statement not dig deeper holes. 👍

981 is highly modified and being driven better this video doesn't really show much!

Stock for Stock a 718 would be faster for sure, I am still a frim believer that a 718 GTS 2.5 would be quicker in most situations than a GT4 as well!

The 718 Turbos really do shift also the steering is better too :)

Excuses excuses, it was put forward that a 2.0l 718 was a quicker car than a 3.4s, I've put forward evidence to contradict the statement, a 3.4 and a 2.5 having some fun, and the results speak for themselves. A heavily modified 981 makes a few more bhp at peak than standard probably half a car length in the real world. The chap in the 718 is doing just fine but all that torque isn't getting him anywhere because of an invention called a gearbox.

I'm not disputing that the 2.5 is the quicker car, but not the 2.0.

  11. 🤣 I know you are on the wind up.

But.... for the benefit of others here is a 718s Vs 981s, don't see the car with the power and torque advantage leaving the 3.4 for dead on the straights do you, let alone the 2.0l

I prefer the 2.0l to the 2.5l it really suits the manual box actually, the gearing feels shorter than the manual 981.

  12. The best offer on the car was £47.2k, the fees go to collecting cars so not relevant. You could go to £48k if everything checks out, but remember a seized exhaust valve could end up costing you the best part of £2k

    Thanks Daz.

There's one for sale but way too much IMO (£8.5k more than you higher private sale figure). I figured a fair price of £45 to 48 tops (if no maintenance required, discs, tyres etc). Due to this I haven't offered my 'low' offer.

And without any form of warranty / even remaining OPC so I could extend.

Thinking the seller isn't in a rush, doesn't actually want or need to sell or chancing a sale.

The collecting cars one, yes it's a good spec but it's encroaching Spyder territory which is more deserving of such a premium. .

It's been well discussed, most people in agreement that it's overpriced. It made £47k on collecting cars which was a very good offer, especially considering the fees they take.

  14. I've driven several, the figures are not real life, the only time it's quicker is a quick jab of the throttle in a high gear.

We all have pdk boxes that can have us exactly where we need to be in the rev range, a nice high revving 3.4 keeps on going while the little 4 pot is all out of ideas.

You need a 2.5 to be any quicker than the 3.4 S and that's a fact.

Cheers for your thoughts. It's manual.... does this adjust up or down?

Slightly less maybe but not a significant difference since they are rarer, they might hang around a bit longer, but if you especially wanted a manual I'd suggest waiting a little longer for the Spyder, prices are definitely softening.

(Await the roof comments - a very small price to pay for the engine and styling).

  16. All my opinion.

Assuming pdk, £45-47k private. Motorway suggesting 44k for the seller so anything more is a bonus.

Value dependant on an condition of paint, service requirements, the tyres, brakes, and any faults like seized PSE valves.

I expect values to drop from in the near term.

  17. Suspect one or more of your changeover valves (solenoids) in the vacuum system might be sticking or faulty, I've replaced two of them on my car one impacting the heating (no hot air) and the other the PSE. I got a low coolant warning with the PSE one but no warnings with the heater valve.

There is apparently one linked to the pdk also which may be a coincidence.

  18. My experience of Pirellis (n0) is that they are pretty good in the dry, yes a little bit unpredictable in the wet when cold but the drama associated with them is overdone on the internet.

Mine handles really well even on bumpy corners.  I've binned the 20 inch wheels, went down to 19 and now am on 18 with thinner tyres.  Standard passive dampers.  Glides over speed bumps at crazy speeds.  Easily the quickest car I have on rougher road surfaces.

They are really good on our bump ridden roads, the guys with the new GT cars are always wobbling around behind me complaining about the surfaces.

  20. The 718 chassis and 981 are very similar, they added a cross brace onto the ARB, in my video I added this and another from gt4 that isn't fitted on the 718.

The dampers are marginally thicker but that's about it. I found the 718 had less traction at the rear at times particularly in the wet because of the power delivery, it's less smooth and sometimes laggy.

As you've found low mileage, low use cars come with different problems. The worse kind being the ones that are washed and put away wet.
