The reset procedure worked on my friend's car, he was complaining about the shifts after it has sat for a long while in lay-up and it worked! (remarkably).
Have a read.

I'd try this before updating.

Mine is still working fine, are there any good tips on how to keep it this way?
Presumably any lubrication doesn't stay there for long.
Avoid short cycles without a drive to dry the mech, moisture on start up which if left seizes the mechanism. Particularly bad if you move the car a short distance for a lengthy lay up but if you have to then lubricate it as a preventive measure.

Looks like fun, how did you get on? I hope you didn’t let team 981 down 😂
How did your car feel after you coding bits and pieces?
Just awesome, perfect conditions, the sound really echos on that road.
Of course I did, the chap in th gt4 was checking my tyres, he was trying to establish if I had cups fitted 😜
Yes very happy with both changes, performance is enhanced without the feeling of intervention.

If you don't have a warning on the dash leave it, it is perhaps nothing to worry about.

Having done a DIY on some old units and de-chroming I'd recommend paying someone who has experience it's a pig of a job, lots of hours until you build the confidence up and the risk of damaging something is quite high, then you have the added complication of dust/debris getting into the unit. Buy second hand or pay a pro whatever is less.

Fair increase on that since I did it!
Some people have reported the part number as your own ending F works. Also found on some VWs.

There are 2 options as I see it, ask the garage to check the torque on the top mount, seems like the nearside and that would explain why everything else is ok. However, ask for confirmation that none of the bushes are worn on any of the arms, if they aren't playing ball take it to another garage. You don't need a Porsche dealer to diagnose noisy suspension components, and see what they say.
The other thing I've heard about is the fuel tank pads wearing out but it doesn't sound like that.

The mechanic has spent six hours, trying to find it, they’ve put sensors on each corner and found nothing.🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Feel your pain they often say things like that when they can't be bothered working it out.

Front suspension top mounts can knock as you've described. I would Google and see what comes up and then ask them to check those areas one by one.

@Lonewolfgjpit's in the wet and cold conditions where it lets you down a bit you have to drive with faith rather than feel but you quickly learn to trust them, very forgiving unless you hit standing water, you can ask @ATMabout that.

Some pcm upgrade videos on my YouTube channel if you are interested. That also applies to the cdr31.
or if you are a bit more brave !

I've recently discovered a setting in Piwis that allowed me to change the steering setting to that of the 991 GT3. I think it has improved it but not significantly, I need to go back to the old setting to remember what it was like before.
You have to watch out for the sweeping statements on 981 steering, if the car had power steering plus they feel very artificial compared to a car without, so a 987 owner jumping into a car with that option enabled will feel traumatic and I don't use that term lightly.
Tyres and geo make a difference, particularly in ensuring that the steering angle sensor has been reset after geo has been adjusted, it can make them feel a bit off otherwise.
A well sorted 981 considering my points above isn't a problem and I can jump into a 997 or 987 and appreciate the improvement but not be blown away by it. The internet is full of these sweeping statements based on individual experiences so take them with a pinch of salt.

I was quite taken with the 987 Spyder I drove, it felt more alive, I felt more connected and I did quite like using a manual again..... But on the way home I realised that the 981s is really quite similar you can get all of the same feelings, what you lose in steering feel you gain with sound but it's at a faster pace, it's just a more competent version of the same car, tbh it's just more refined at lower speed, the tech is definitely a leap forward on the 981, pasm and pdk noticeably so.

I like how one of the essentials is one you ditched 😂
However, yes that is the essentials list for sure.
I put mine up on the for sale section a few days ago which has a load of options, but it’s lowly, weedy, 2.7. Luckily on a couple of runs I’ve been on with S’s and a 4.0 GTS they must’ve all been kindly holding back because no-one was ever pulling away 🤔
I may be wrong but didn’t the base 981 have more (or the same) power as the previous S and less weight? Though PDK added it back maybe…
True but it's a step too far for most people.
On the good roads they all keep up just fine to be honest, it's all about the nut behind the wheel I find. I've found the same with a 4.0l gt4 it only seems to have more grunt at the very end of its rev range.
Not far off the gen 1 but PDK helps with acceleration, goes through the gears quicker.

Is there any other YouTube or media I can consume in the mean time ☺️. There are not many close to me and I know from when I was looking for my 987, examples seem to feel different. It depends on the ownership and the condition of course and a cosseted higher mileage felt tighter than the abused 10+ owners ones. I’m in no rush so can afford time wise to be selective.
I'm looking at another make too, I won’t say what, not to spark interest but I want this to be about ‘sell me the 981 experience’ and not why x make is poop.
but advice is heard, drive lots and see what suits. Thank you
There's a guy on here that makes click bait type videos associated with the 981. No affiliation honest ..😜🫣

Worth saying the mounts have been known to go but they don't always fail, I personally think it's linked to corrosion getting into the connections but strangely it's still happening today on almost brand new cars so hard to say, I wouldn't let it put you off a car with Sports Chrono, we will be able to code them out if they fail and you can replace them with the standard mounts.
-
My advice, find a nice S in a colour you can live with, PDK or manual is up to you, but you won't be disappointed with PDK, manual ratios might annoy you.
Get PSE ✅ - essential
PASM feels nice and 10mm lower ✅
PCM 3.1 with nav ✅
Extended leather ✅
Chrono is nice to have but not essential.
Anything else is a bonus.
Residuals look solid to me, the only alternative is an £80k 4.0l 718!

Google search for images of the 981 GT4 or Spyder and you'll see them.

I'm not going to test this feature. 😂

Disassemble everything and cross your fingers it is something obvious, the mechanism is probably expensive.
