981 with SC but no PSE - anyway to open the exhaust value permanently?

Hi.

i have sports chrono on my 981 and am told that the exhaust note changes when it's turned on. I know with my brothers v8 vantage he was able to get a fuse taken out so keep his exhaust value open at all times without driving in sport mode. Is this possible in the 981?

i do not have PSE btw.

thanks

Selecting Sports or Sports+ definitely changes the exhaust's sound track.  I have PSE, but the effect is noticeable with the PSE switched on or off (although way more noticeable with PSE switched on).  Driving style also has a significant affect, just as it does with PASM behaviour and the PDK shift pattern.  I suspect as there's so much going on related to the car's control systems that could affect the exhaust note - especially for non-PSE - it is probably much more than just a simple fuse - but I could be wrong :-)

if its a standard exhaust I dont think there is valve unless you have PSE

I have PSE and the exhaust does change with the valve open or closed (obviously) but also the Sport button alone makes a difference (slightly), in terms of the sensitivity of the throttle and how it impacts the engine and sounds etc.

I would think this is just how the engine is revving that makes the difference though and nothing else, same goes with Sports Chrono just to a greater extent (revs higher before changing up on a PDK car for instance so you get more of a rasp when accelerating).

not sure that makes sense...but I dont think there is a fuse you can take out, you would just have to switch on Sport/Sport Plus when you get in the car

Unless in manual mode sport plus is too aggressive for prolonged road use as in auto the revs max out in every gear before changing up, and it changes down at the earliest opportunity keeping the engine revs very high.

I suspect the exhaust note change in sport plus is simply higher revs - I'm pretty sure there is no valve to open unless PSE is fitted.

Thanks guys, I went into Porsche and they confirmed what you guys said. £2k to upgrade to PSE, don't think I can justify it!  Wish I had bought a 981 with PSE instead of SC now although they are much harder to find.

You certainly get more noises on the over run with Sports Plus on and it may be in my head but the note does sounds a little deeper.

If you don't want to fork out for PSE suggest you try Carnewal. It's sounds as good if not better than PSE from what I've heard.

Thanks! Yeah I'm just reluctant to spend 2k on it so this may be an option.

otherwise I have found a 981 GTS exhaust system for sale in a salvage yard. Does anyone know if the GTS comes with PSE as standard?

I don't think the PSE was standard on the GTS, but I could be wrong. There will be quite a lot of work if you want it to operate correctly and you will need to ensure that you got all the bits including the switches and any actuators. The car will need coding so that it knows that the exhaust is fitted and I would think it is far from a DIY job.

Some have fitted the Porsche PSE to 986's and fixed the valves open so as not to have to plumb the whole system in.

If I were you I would either bite the bullet and pay the 2K or go for an aftermarket one as suggested earlier. Unless you are up for the challenge.

If it is this one that you are looking at then it is a switchable sports exhaust

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2014-PORSCHE-BOXSTER-981-3-4-GTS-PDK-SPORTS-EXHAUST-MUFFLERS-TAIL-PIPE-CAYMAN-/401126218485?hash=item5d64fc5af5:g:ldgAAOSwQaJXRUrn

But by the time you have bought it and the extra stuff needed and had it fitted you may as well have got Porsche to fit a new one.

I thought it did, but on looking into it I think Eddie is correct it was standard on the GTS...and I'd agree in paying the £2k to get it done properly unless you are a decent spanner monkey and know what you need/how to do it

PSE is definitely standard on the GTS - as is Sport Chrono.  It's also different to the PSE on the S, so not sure how you'd get on fitting it as it may not work as it should due to the differences in the engine tuning.

Thanks all for your replies and input. I agree that the few hundred pound saving is not worth the risk against getting it done by Porsche. I guess I really need test drive a 981 with PSE to work out if it's something I can justify and I ought to consider how long I plan on keeping the car as I doubt I'll recoup much of the £2k in resell value. Otherwise the aftermarket system for circa £500 seems worth while but I'll need to get a local Porsche mechanic to install for me.

£2000 is lot of money for some switchable noise.

It is but you could argue that 40, 50 or 60K is a lot of money to drive fast in style.

PSE is possibly my favourite option on my car along with PDK and worth the money IMO. You may not get the money back but you will make the car more desirable when you sell it and have more fun while you own it.

Yes I foolishly thought SC had the option to make the exhaust louder when in sport+ mode, the salesman I bought the car from told me this and I took his word for it. Had I'd known I would have looked with a 981 with PSE instead of SC as I hardly use it! Also have PASM which I hardly use. Strangely not many 981 (2.7) have PSE on used market though.

I suppose if you are buying a 2.7 then you may be on more of a budget and therefor less likely to specify expensive options.

You may not think that you are using PASM but you are. Its working all the time and adjusting the suspension to your driving. Try a car without, you will soon notice the difference.

Thanks for the info about PASM. I thought it was the ability to switch to sports suspension. I thought for a car sitting on 20" wheels it rode very well!! Ha.

Im going to speak to a local Porsche specialist in north London to see what they'll charge to fit the Carnewal system then way it up against PSE from Porsche.

if anyone knows of any other recommended sports exhaust systems I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks again folks.

Probably should know this as I own one but how does the PSE on the GTS differ from the S? I've not heard a PSE equipped 'S' at any decent revs so didn't realise they were different.
