Donington Park - the chicane before the main straight - on the national circuit.

Long time since I drove Donington, 1995??, and that was with the Melbourne Loop.

Can I ask what symptoms did you have when the variocam actuator failed please?  Do you know what your cam deviation was before it failed?

Thanks

Cam deviation was well within spec, but can't recall the figures.  The only symptom was a really lumpy idle that smoothed out with higher revs and there was no CEL. Diagnostics pointed to the Bank 2 solenoid - it turned out that was working fine, but the actuator was toast which is less common apparently.  When you buy the actuator, it includes the solenoid too as part of the kit.  We did the chain guides while everything was apart - I suspect the Bank 1 guides will need doing at some point too as they were pretty worn (currently 80K miles.)

Had my brake calipers refurbished by Brake Caliper Refurbs who did an amazing job, this included new braided hoses and copper lines all fitted back at my local independent. Gave her a good clean thereafter and unfortunately haven't used it since due to the abysmal weather over the past three weeks. Itching for a drying weekend.

Thanks for this, interesting that it didn't throw a CEL.  I think if I'm going to keep mine, I'm going to need the same doing.  The specialist thinks my actuator is sticking, the Cam deviation returns to spec when reset, but then drifts out slowly.  I also get a rattle on warm startup and now at low rpm so suspect the chain guides also need replacing (just had two of the tensioners replaced which if anything made the rattle worse).  At 180k miles, I'm not sure it's worth the expense.  Still drives beautifully though, so a bit of head scratching needed.

Had the wheels balanced. Hopefully this'll stop the little shimmy on the motorway.

I had two shimmys on mine, one in the high 60s/low 70s which was balance on 17" rims, the another at around 80 (only on the continent... you understand) which turned out to be a slightly buckled front left, fixed for £40 at my local tyre independent.

A run last night from Stockport to the autobahn for testing purposes showed that the balancing as done the trick perfectly. Cost me a bit in fuel, but at least I didn't break the law in any way.

New stereo to replace the CDR22. I got it for the bluetooth & dab functions but the dab wants a pukka antenna really. On previous cars it's been OK, on this it isn't, it's only picking up maybe 25% of stations, and they're pretty crunchy. I'm pleased with the mic on the bluetooth though, I had the clocks up & off the dash and ran the mic into the little section to the right of the clocks, and it's gone in a treat.

I put a Kenwood head unit in mine for the same reason to get BT and DAB.  I went for a film aerial that stick to the screen and put it on the passenger side.  Works great and cost about £10 or £12 for the pukka Kenwood one, cheaper ones are out there but it is that much of a saving...?

Glad the shimmy was the cheap option.  Feels great once it has gone doesn't it?

I've a sony head unit, but it then leaves me with the question about what's a good antenna? There's a car hifi place not far from here, i'll nip in tomorrow, see what they recommend. Then i have to suss out how to get the cover off the pillar.

Just pull back from the screen edge and its on spring clips. IIRC you'll need to remove the sun visor too, T20 screw.

Cheers for the tips. I fitted the antenna earlier and it's gone on really nicely. The radio sounds good too.

Nothing, but took my mum to the Doctors in it.

Considering she can't even remember what day it is, I was quite surprised when she commented on the ride being less harsh then last time she travelled in the car.

Was on H&R lowering springs back then so she was right..... bless her :)

They look stunning, did you send them off or just leave your car with them? Could you share the company that did them please?

My local independent close to where I live in Braintree, Essex removed the calipers for me and kindly stored the car while they were away, they were sent to a company in Rochdale called Brake Caliper Refurbs, they changed all of the rubber parts and bleed nipples and painted them in OEM Red with “Porsche” in OEM Type Face.

When the calipers were refitted I had new Brembo discs fitted, along with BFGoodrich braided brake hoses, and Brembo Brake Fluid I’m still bedding everything in but my initial thoughts are the centre peddle feels more positive. Aesthetically the car looks a million dollars.

Should there be any further information you need then do let me know.

After given the headlights the full restoration treatment yesterday (had to remove overspray lacquer as well as yellowing so lots of hand wet & dry cation as well as machine polishing.  Fair result.

Got up early today to head down to Cotswolds Airport to a new meet venue. (Thanks for organising @CAZ)  Worth the trip down some old familiar roads.  Then up to Leamington to drop off so parts to another BoXa.net member.  Just over 200 miles (around 130 of that topless) on a nice dry fresh day in October.  Can't be bad.

I let my wife drive mine for the first time. No bending of metal or crunching of plastic, no flames and no blood spattered paintwork. I think we can say that's a result.

There’s still plenty of time ! 😉

After receiving the aforementioned parts, I spent 30 mins or so fitting them and now have 7 CDs worth of music ready to listen to on the way to work tomorrow.

Thanks for the multichanger Chris. 👍
