I made the mistake of thinking the kickdown was like my Audi S-Tronic. Where you have to mash your foot into the floor for it to kickdown.....nope, but it managed to get a yelp out of the salesman when I did it :)

Good to know about the neutral, not sure why, apart from a tunnel blip, I would need it....

Now got insurance issues, my current policy with Flux can't cover it because I haven't owned it for more than 12 months so had to cancel that policy, which I only took out 2 weeks ago, and there other policies all came in at £1500ish, even they advised to go elsewhere. So got to start the great big ring around again.........all to be done tomorrow as its bankholiday friday....

Mine was a painful transaction, but I ended up with almost 18% off.  £5k on the sticker price and £2k of extras/apologies at OPC.

Eg I asked them if the satnag was the latest version when we were back in the showroom.  Then quickly changed the subject to service history so he was concentrating on his tablet.  Then after I signed I reminded him he hadn't confirmed the latest version.  He just said "I'll make sure it is" That's a grand there once you include the 3 hrs labour to update PCM and sat nag.

For the sticker price I had already viewed another car and got a finance quote to show them.  Ohh and they can move about 2% on the finance rate too if you push them hard.

Take the emotion out of the transaction and treat it as a business deal.  I often struggle with this, but for once I stuck to it and played off salesman and sales manager.  So salesman gave me sat nag upgrade, salesman gave me the boot liners and, respray etc.  Business manager gave me the huff and I really wanted to punch him - he's the one they call in to "negotiate" finance rates.  Just remember it's not your responsibility to pay their commissions.

Have fun, and good luck

Basically follow the rules above.

Stick to your guns, take the emotion out of it, there are plenty more cars out there.

If you have a figure you are willing to pay/can afford. Stick to it and don't budge.

It is a buyers market at the moment especially at the premium end of the market.

If you have to play dealers or sales staff off against each other then do it.

Mine was also a demo that they had finished with and wanted rid of, any info like that use it to your advantage. Just this info alone was worth a couple of grand to me.

At all times be polite and respectful!!!!!!

Hi,

If you are still looking to sort insurance we can take a look for you, if you've owned it less than 12 months our specialist insurers may require relevant experience from previous driving history, i.e. what did you own before, similar vehicle/engine size. We also offer favourable premiums for forum members too!

But if you'd like to call us today, we are open until 5pm :) 01635 874646

Thanks!

Carlie

CONGRATS ! and what a beauty !

I forgot to mention month end discounts, I also lucked into year end so they were keen to shift as many cars as they can.  Turns out their allocation of new cars is dependent on number of total cars sold - used and new.

Try Direct line, I found them significantly cheaper than most, ie at least £1000 !

Thanks. :)

And thanks to all for the negotiating tips. First time I've managed to treat a car purchase as a business deal rather than with by emotion...quite a satisfying process looking back at it. Walking out not having done a deal felt good, it felt even better when they called me within 10 mins with a better deal. :)
