Low Oil Pressure - Engine Cut Out

So I was moseying my way up the motorway and  a sudden jolt, “Low Oil Pressure” flashes up, engine cuts out and all of a sudden I’m just rolling down hill at 60mph wondering what the hell to do!

Sitting here waiting for green flag, engine won’t turn over, but I’m sure there were no warning signs this morning. Serviced/mot’d in December. Shrug.

I was due to drive to Switzerland next week...not my car’s year this...Ive a feeling this means kaput!

That sounds bad🙁 Could be an IMS failure or it's thrown a shell on the crank. The low oil pressure flashing up makes me think the latter. Hope I'm wrong. Good luck, let us know what the verdict is.

Not good with low oil pressure.  Don't try and turn it over. Do you see any oil leaking? Could be IMS, could be slipped timing chain.

I had her towed to my specialists, so hopefully they’ll be able to diagnose it.

Greenflag reckoned it was a starter motor fault which doesn’t make sense to me.  But he did say that the error was probably just it restarting which kind of makes sense, so that could be a red herring.  There’s lights and the battery health was good when checked.  The oil pressure check in first position didn’t throw anything, but the oil temp had a red light on.

Freewheeling at 60mph was a new experience anyway...

You don’t realise how much you like them until you realise they’re leaving...

Which happened first?

If the oil pressure light came on before the engine stopped, that would be more likely to indicate a problem.

If the oil pressure light came on as/after the engine cut out, then that's normal (speaking generally about cars here). With no engine on, no oil pump is pumping, so no pressure. So you still have whatever caused the engine to cut out, but not necessarily any problem with oil pressure. Which is more likely to be a cheap/simple fix than the first scenario.

Either way, good luck & hope it's something simple.

Just had an update from 911Box, and as suspected the engine’s seized so its uneconomical to repair. 😐

This is now an ex-car, it has passed this mortal coil, etc.

Just waiting to hear if I can get anything for the parts then it’s the long game saving for another toy.  Probably a Taycan. (Runs, hides)

8 years or so for a £10K investment isn’t so bad; memorable trips for surfing, triathlon and skiing, chucking it around Brands Hatch, cruising around the Champagne region...it’s been a blast 👍
