LED Headlamp & main beam bulbs?

A lot of the discussion on this centres around the dipped beam and I understand why, however how the the LEDs compare in main beams and are these event tested at MOT other than both work?

I ask as I have Litronics.

I have recently replaced my dip beams and fogs for LED's. Had MOT last week which it passed. However on returning home and actually reading the pass sheet I noticed that initially it had failed due to headlight alignment. The tester (whom I have used for a number of years) had simply adjusted the headlights and written out a pass sheet with no extra charge - very decent of him. Might point is he wasn't happy with the alignment but made no comments on the LED's.

BTW does anyone know of sidelight LED or at least very white bulbs as it looks a bit odd with 'yellow' sidelights and white mains. Tried a set of Halfords LED but immediately got errors.

In my 986 with Litronics I use some Cree H6W LED and never had a comment on the lights re MOT.

Is it that easy a job to adjust headlight aim on our cars?

No idea! In fact after I read the 'fail' and later thought about it I realised I didn't know how to do it...Google here I come

Yes, so easy did it and forgot - if you are familiar with how they lay out the vertical/horizontal adjustments in most cars there's nothing outstanding...

Hi folks,

Thanks for all the comments.

I've rolled the dice and ordered some for main and dipped beam.

If they're amazing - great, they stay in. If not, they go in the bin.

They're not the expensive Phillips jobs but they do have decent feedback on Amazon.

Will be dropping them in next week at some point, I'll let y'all know how I get on.

Cheers,

Ian B

How did you get on with these mate?

Not so in my experience.  Not on my boxster but I do use Philips ultinon on my daily and they are excellent, far better than halogen.

This sounds like a useful tip, if expensive. I would want to replace all the front lights at the same time, Dipped, main, fogs & indicators to maintain a uniform look. Where can I get the details for these various bulbs for my 987.1? I'll buy the bulbs then have them fitted by an Indie when it goes in for other work.

Bear in mind the MOT update this month making retro fit LEDs and Xenons an automatic fail, if the tester can detect them in any way.  Be prepared to swap then over to standard for a retest just in case.....

Thanks for this warning. What is the legal way to get modern quality lights on a 2005 car? Driving by braille doesn't appeal.

Retro fit complete Litronics as opposed to just bulbs, then they are manufacturer spec so not a fail or buy a 981....

I'm glad they're working well. Do you have Litronic? Can you show a link to the exact bulbs you chose?

Thanks,

Litronics, which use a D2S xenon bulb, do not have an LED upgrade.  There are upgraded direct replacement Xenon bulbs available however.  The %age increase gains that these quote are compared to standard bulbs, not the base xenon bulb which is already significantly brighter so watch for marketing hype when selecting these.  My 986 has Litronics and they do deteriorate over time and with use so I'm considering replacing but will most likely stick with standard spec ones rather than upgrades.  I do however have Osram Nightbreakers in the main beam as these are standard bulbs.

@Roger C they're really good mate - beam pattern is much better defined and confidence is restored in driving 'briskly' in the evening!

Nice one, thats what I wanted to here, we took our 987.1 up to the New Forest back in October and how we didn't end up embedded in a horse god only knows, at times I'm sure I was driving just using 'the force' so an upgrade is well over due. I don't really fancy extending the mortgage (again) to afford the Phillips so any chance of a link to the ones you got please mate.

Hi @Roger C

Side lights - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XZ2BQHD/

Dipped beam - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07TV41S91/

Main beam - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07QYDN1D2/

Fog lamp - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07C1269CZ/

None of these caused any issues installing or CAN errors / warning lights etc.

Cheers,

Ian B

oh, and you can also use the side light bulbs for your door / puddle lamps as well ! (they won't fit the interior light though as they're too long for the housing)

I hope the "stringent quality controls" were better than the proof reading on the images! The claims of MOT compliance sound unlikely too, given the blanket ban.

Still, a lot cheaper than the Philips and they look like a similar design.

They appear to be made in China...
