Hi all, new 987 owner here, having picked up a 2005 3.2S on Monday. Enjoying it so far on the commute over the last couple of days, just over 13 miles each way. This will be a daily driver (hopefully if it holds out without any of the tails of woe!).

It's got a few things needing attention - major one being a new hood required, so I'm on the search for one (new or used? any comments?). New door speakers required, which are on the way and I will install this weekend. On that note, should I buy some new door card clips or hope for the best? After this, I'll also look to change the heater control switches as the current ones are faded as is commonly found I understand.

It's due a service in November, however I'll bring that forward to early next month. Any recommendations for a good independent in North Essex? My nearest is Autostrasse, who are less than a mile away from me. However, I've heard mixed reviews since new ownership..

I've come from a long line of BMW ownership - most recently a E63 650i and prior to that an E46 M3, which I regret selling to this day. I also have another Porsche, a '79 928, which is going to be a long term project as it's not been moved in 15 years.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any responses to my questions above. Looking forward to more posts as I get to learn about the 987..

Welcome to the club matey, and don't worry about all the tales of woe, they are completely unfounded and almost never happen in real life.........   Using the car as a daily is probably one of the best things you can do with it, just make sure it's properly warmed up before you boot it (same advice for all cars really).

Brave man taking on a 928 project - I predict you will spend a lot more on that than the Boxster!

Yeah, I think it's going to be a wallet buster. However, it was my fathers car so has more than a little sentimental value to me. He's in a home now and I would love to get it on the road in time to take him out for a ride in it, but funds will dictate that one..

Welcome and enjoy - be sure to post some pics in the Member's Rides/Newbie Lounge if you haven't already.

Thanks. I'll look that section up. Need to get some pics and not in this current weather! 😊

Welcome. You might be able to pick up a decent used hood from one of the breakers e.g. Douglas Valley, Jasmine, Prestige, 9apart. Have a look at ebay. For a new hood check out the forum sponsor Carhood Warehouse. Other people may be able to suggest alternative suppliers.

I think door card removal often necessitates new clips - probably cheap enough from OPC.

Have fun!

Welcome.

Someone bought a new hood and observed the prices were less if you could swap your lining over from the old one, that might be relevant to you.

Door speakers - do be careful about that waterproof membrane, too many aren't then flood their cars in a heavy shower.

928 - love 'em, very best of luck there.  Must be a hardcore of enthusiasts for 928s who will help you?

Welcome Steve.

The car will make a good daily driver but do make sure to get out on a run with other "enthusiastic" Boxster owners because you will never find out just how good and how much fun these cars are on a daily commute. I speak from experience😏

I'll have a look out at those places suggested, thanks.

Lining seems absolutely fine, so that will help. Point duly noted about the waterproof membrane, thanks. Yes, can't wait to get the 928 up and running again. It's been 15 years since I drove it last, it was always a fantastic drive. There is a great amount of knowledge out there on the web so I'll be taking full advantage of that..

If the roof mechanism is working fine and purely a recover, try CE Moore, excellent roof specialists.

I'm hoping it is working fine. I haven't been able to check it as the relay is dead. However, all microswitches seem to be working ok. I'll look in to CE Moore too, thanks.

Welcome along, as said door clips for all the price of them replace, why does the hood need replaced holes damaged ?

Thanks. I have ordered some door clips from OPC Colchester, picking them up Saturday. The hood has a 2-3 inch tear/rip just behind the drivers door, low down. The hood fabric is a little slack there compared to the other side.

I'd love to get out on a proper run!. Fortunately, although my commute is fairly short, it's all relatively quiet back roads/lanes at NSL, so not a bad run in to work!

Thanks to you all for the welcome and responses to my questions, much appreciated! 👍

You need to get in touch with the TV show that does the secret restorations of people’s cars and then ‘surprises’ them with it. Fuzz and some annoying idiot front it. Love the 928😍

Welcome.

I have a 987 also and I got the hood replaced by Pickerings in Bradford. Brilliant job, if you are in the Yorkshire region.

Best wishes,

Thanks all for the suggestions regarding the roof replacement. Ideally, I'm looking for any recommendations down south (I'm in Essex/Suffolk border), however will travel if I don't find anyone down this way.

Purchasing continues (I've caught the bug), with the Zunsport front grille set ordered last night. I did see a very useful write up on installing these somewhere on here, so will follow that when the time comes.

I'll try and get some pictures up in the newbie section soon...

Its really easy, just clip on one side then slightly gently bend the grill, and the other side pops straight in.  Just take your time so as to not scratch the paint
