G6JOJ
Hi everyone My recently acquired 986 S came with a recently changed exhaust which sounded great on a quick test drive but is horribly droney at motorway speeds - which I have now come to learn is pretty common. The quick/cheap fix seems to be sticking a couple of motorcycle baffles in there which I have done (and lost a couple in the process under heavy acceleration) which does really help but my Porsche specialist and couple other car guys I've spoken to think it's a terrible idea (i.e. bad for the engine) - any thoughts on this? Are there any aftermarket options that give a more OE experience (i.e. no drone!)? I love a loud exhaust as much as the next guy but I'm dailying the car for a bit, and planning some long trips with my not so understanding other half. Getting hold of an OE exhaust seems like an option - what should I expect to pay for a good one? And how do I make sure it's good!? I'm totally clueless here - any and all advice very much appreciated. Joe
iborguk
Hi. In general terms Dansk/Miltek/TopGear/Carnewal seem to get good feedback. I'm sure folks who actually own them/have owned them will pitch in...good luck !
RalphyBMW
Dansk manufacture the OEM exhaust - but they are far from cheap. Starting at ~£850 I think. Used I’d expect to pay between £100-£450, but beware that these exhausts are around 20 years old, and your old one was probably replaced due to corrosion on the seams. They are bulky and quite heavy, so shipping can be a challenge. The OEM exhaust is mounted on the end of the gearbox, I was missing a spacer between the end of the gearbox and the mounting bracket - not sure if the 6 speed is the same. There is also a bracket on the bottom, and it ties in to the cats with more bracketry. I had a noisy aftermarket setup, which I replaced last year with a used box for £100, plus elbows £36, clamps £50 and some missing bracketry at another £20 or so. That exhaust is now blowing on the seams so I’m shopping for a new Dansk, but hoping to reuse my existing brackets, tail pipe, etc.
Terryg
@RalphyBMW If you find a really good stainless guy the seams can be welded, it requires someone with patience as the crack left after grinding tends to "run" as the heat is applied. Once done it is better than standard as there is no trough where the metal is folded for water to collect in. Just a thought if you wanted to keep it standard.
Menoporsche
Get a balance pipe welded between the two.

As you are in the same sort of area as me and It could be good to get my 22 year old back box sorted before it does finally fail. Got to be the cheapest solution. brillomaster
cheapest option is to drive around the drone. only does it about 2500-2900rpm, so keep the revs above that and you're fine. if i'm on the motorway, i don't put it in 6th until i'm doing an indicated 80mph, which is then just about 3000rpm. so fine for continental cruising. any speed below that i'll still be in 5th. also the ebay dronemaster exhaust does get a bit better when it's coked up a bit, i dont notice the drone as much as when i first had it installed - but then i also avoid the rev range where it happens. MickH
Having been there and done that with what was supposedly a high end exhaust, every exhaust specialist I asked told me to not bother messing around and get the topgear/ DT/ Spyder exhaust. These are essentially the same but with different names. I have the switchable one which my neighbours thank me for in the mornings. And only ever use it closed on long motorway journeys. Even fully open there is no drone, even with the stainless manifolds which have increased the volume even more I have also realised that on my DesignTek one, there is an element of adjustment which I've used to slightly tame the volume on wide open. If I was to do it again I wouldn't bother changing the manifolds as it sounded perfect on the standard ones

I was living in Bolton at the time, I was recommended to a guy who built food grade stainless steel tanks, he did a bypass mod for me and welded the seams where they were splitting. He was reluctant to do the latter as he knew the crack could spread but then I think he saw it as a bit of a challenge and decided to go for it. I was impressed with the work he did and cannot see why it couldn't save a lot of old systems except for the fact no one is going to want to do it. So sorry he isn't near you and I don't still have his details, I can only say it is possible and I wish you good luck whatever route you take.

I bought one recently and it's unbearable! Total waste of £450. So wish I'd not told my independent who did the swap plus some other work at the same time to junk the original back box... It's now got baffles inside it which have helped, but as they're now rusting and staining the inside of the twin pipes, clearly not 'Stainless Steel' as advertised. It could well be 'stainless steel' but there are many grades, some still corrode unfortunately. For example when I was in the retail display sector interior use fittings could be satin, brushed or polished 304 grade, exterior use fittings had to be 316. I bought my exhaust direct from TG who are local and they had he car in to modify the system to kill the drone. Not sure exactly what they did but I suspect they cut it open and added baffles. I’ve just ordered the standard equivalent Dansk and will reuse the existing tailpipe. Under £920 inc shipping. I keep looking at the Dansk but its a mind field with sausage style, super sound etc. I am looking for a bit more noise than standard when the old right foot goes down but don't want any drone , anyone got a recommendation on what Dansk would be the better option?? RalphyBMW
I heard mixed views. My understanding is that the standard TUV approved with pressed casing is most quiet Pressed casing, non-TUV is next Sausage type I think is loudest

Do not buy the sausage box - on my facelift 2.7 it droned terribly at cruising/motorway speeds.

edc
This is just a rebranded eBay one. Originally sold in the US as Top speed. Sold in the UK for the last few years as Toyosport and more recently as Gravity. Various other names in recent years too. The manufacturer is from Alibaba and depending on price paid and quantity ordered you can have some minor cosmetic customisation and some branding applied. Loads of eBay and Amazon stuff is the same. brillomaster
Has anyone tried this system from Design 911? Looks reasonably priced for a new exhaust, and its a big single unit so might not suffer from drone, depending on how its routed inside. https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod1609/Exhaust-Muffler---Silencer-Sports-System-Porsche-Boxster-986/
