Indeed!!

suspension and the various woes aren’t my strong suit so I wasn’t venturing it as a root cause - but if you think it could be then good info

I was attempting illustrate the  a similar scenario (main dealer can’t find it - specialist can - even from a description)

what surprised me was the rebuild by (I assume bilstein) for an oe Porsche shock

Part of my job as an Engineer, I play Sherlock quite a lot , but I’ve also played Cluso on occasions !!!

Similar.  I am a software engineer (with a bit a hardware thrown in) and learned “spanners” from my dad who was an “engineer” (read spanner man ) on tugs and ships and for a while oil rigs.

i would suggest that in addition to Sherlock and Cluso there’s a bit of “mystic Meg” to be added in there. :)

Undoubtedly sitting on a park bench is not often the way to diagnose!!

It doesn’t say a lot for a main dealer if they can’t find the vault, I’m just waiting for the bill for a no fix problem.

Unfortunately I suspect many so called younger mechanics,or technicians, as they like to be called have little real engineering experience and rely totally on plugging in a laptop. "The computer says no" a phrase heard many times in jest 😂.

I'd more likely go with an old school, real hands on engineer like Mick 😃

Aka @bally4563

You beat me to it .

I was gonna ask the age of the techs .

A bush has gone , starting to go = metal on metal .It’s not the science of the rocket 🚀 the techs aren’t putting a man on the moon .

OPC will plug in and follow the change parts out list.

Most Indis are mechanics before "gold class technicians", thus they can diagnose issues much quicker, correctly  and cheaply.

Not all Indi's are experienced enough on the newer cars in my experience though.

Enjoy those smooth empty roads of France (I'm off there Tuesday)

An update on the problem.Collected the  car yesterday, not fixed, they could not find the knock after spending around 6 hrs on the car. They suggested removing the front end to investigate further, which they say involves around another 6 hrs of labour. The technician thinks it maybe a steering rack🤦‍♀️ at a cost of 2.5k just for the rack.  I have a week to decide what to do whilst I’m away.

A little update, just back from France having driven nearly 2k miles, knock still there but apart from that, the car was faultless. Just looking for suggestions for a good indie who I can take the car to, to get sorted. I live in mid Wales LD postcode, all options considered.

Nobody's mentioned front control arm. My last 981 at about 6 years old/35k miles developed a knocking from somewhere at the front at low speed (<20mph) over sharp ridges etc. Diagnosed by OPC (and me!) as control arm, replaced, blissful quiet ride resulted.

Update on mine for future reference the brake duct attached to the control arm was slightly loose on the drivers side, quite surprised that it made such an impact but it seems to echo through the.entire body and steering, it's been re clipped and secured and it seems to have stopped. 🤞
