How big an issue is the absence of Bose? What is the standard hifi like?

Can't say how much of an issue it is as that's up to you but having had a 981 with a standards sound system and now a 981S with the BOSE it is far superior in sound. But I guess if you end up with the 4 pot you wouldn't have the engine sound of the f6 to compete with as the 4 pot is quieter/subdued especially compared to the f6 with PSE, if you go for that you wont care how good the sound system is :)

  2. Guessing it is this one? https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111229841042

If it's a second car, will you be putting much mileage on it? I'd be more concerned its sat doing nothing for long periods of time, maybe even still on the original tyres, check date code on the sidewall to see. It will also be due the 10 year service in 5 months, so another expense to factor in.

It has Sport Chrono, so see if any dynamic transmission mounts have been replaced at any point. No PSE, might not be a problem but I wouldn't buy one without or I'd have it fitted (£2.4k'ish cost), standard steering wheel with buttons not the flappy paddle wheel, again might be your preference.

  3. Doesn't read dishonest to me, just someone not great at wording an advert and you reading too much into how it's written and what's not written. Have you spoken to them? It says he has lots of paperwork, if you're interested best to view in person and read the paperwork, question him on the history and contact the previous owners as they will be listed on the paperwork and see if it ties up to the story, then you can really judge if he's dishonest or not.

Well I used Aviva - just not sure whether they will see it as a repair or replacement

I'm with Aviva, just call them and say you have a chip that needs filling. They will then give your details to the local approved place to arrange a visit, they will then decide if they can repair or have to replace it.

Looking at my details and assuming yours are the same, if you use your own company they will only stump up £50 towards it:

    Glass Repair
Approved Repairer Windscreen Repair Limit Unlimited
Approved Repairer Windscreen Repair Excess £10
Non Approved Repairer Windscreen Repair Limit £50
Non Approved Repairer Windscreen Repair Excess £0

    Glass Replacement
Approved Repairer Windscreen Replacement Limit Unlimited
Approved Repairer Windscreen Replacement Excess £115
Non Approved Repairer Windscreen Replacement Limit £50
Non Approved Repairer Windscreen Replacement Excess £0

  5. Check first, it might be repairable and only cost you £10ish excess for that. Just ring the appointed windscreen company up from your insurance docs and have a chat.

You find if you want to use Porsche to fit the glass it will cost you a lot, as they only pay £200ish towards a non approved fitter (yes Porsche would be classed as non approved!) Check your insurance docs as all insurances are different on what they cover.

I had Autoglass do my last windscreen, cost me £70 excess and the job was fine. Although I did stand over and watch him like a hawk. lol

I will admit I managed to get the warranty added when I knew potentially there was a problem with my gearbox!! It was intermittent and it passed the 111 point check and one month later I called breakdown and 2 weeks later a replacement gearbox!!

Nice result. What were the symptoms to the problem and have they told you what the fault was?

I lived up between Nottingham and London so travelled a lot. My PDK went on it 2 years ago and thankfully added warranty onto it just as it went and the £12K replacement was taken care of!!

Thats some miles. Be interested to hear about what went wrong with the PDK and if it gave you any warning, I guess it might have given you got a warranty added at the right time?

Also any other faults you had over the time that might be worth noting for us that are thinking of keeping long term?

But.  The 981 “needs” to be told it has a new battery.

"need" is not correct. "Ideally" is more accurate, from experience of not doing that and just banging in an aftermarket battery, it has made no difference over a couple of years. Yes the manufacturer has built all this in for a reason, to get the best it should be updated but in reality the difference it makes is not that noticeable as yet to me.

5000 miles in an 8 year old and no reliability problems. I do notice it drops revs in the standard mode every now and then, almost like it wants to go faster and stutters. Absolutely fine in sports mode.

You'll find it can be controlled by the stop start button (sports mode turns that off also which is why you notice it in that mode) It basically drops the revs (goes into neutral) in situations like going down hill without any throttle applied. To save fuel, then as soon as you touch the throttle it engages it all back again, which is probably the hesitancy you're experiencing. Just try turning stop start off and you'll feel the difference.

  10. No pollen filters? Plugs are generic ones. They will be fine but may fail the 111 point check later on if you're going for the warranty. Poly belt check replacement is at 6 years I think. Air filters are not done by default on 8 years but a decent indy will check and report if they think they need replacing. Mine ordered them in in case but found them to be ok.

As for the nipples, I can confirm it's a good idea to get them all removed and replaced if you're having the brake fluid done at the same time. much cheaper in the long run. Or save till later when brake fluid is due (recommended every 2 years)

  11. If £390 is including plugs, that's cheap, worryingly cheap I'd say. Unless they are using non genuine parts and oil? Did you have a breakdown of what the price includes? The plugs are about £20 each from Porsche. The breakdown of parts for my recent 8 year service was £381.16 (inc VAT) for the parts alone. Then labour on top

My Porsche quote for the 8 years in June this year was:

"The 8 year service is £925.00 and this includes the spark plug change and brake fluid change."

Some prices on here from a popular reputable indy to compare against quotes https://www.revolution-porsche.co.uk/servicing/boxster-981#additional-maintenance

What's the price for changing the transmission mounts? Vaguely 1500-2000 if you do both sides at the same time?

Part alone is about £900 so you're £1800 for both sides before labour. Doing the left on it's own is in the region of £1400 for parts and labour. Doing the right needs the left removing first so maybe more labour.

@CMA Six mths on I have only positive feedback and I’m pleased I had it done. Ive probably done 2.5 x 3k miles and it’s all settled down very nicely. When I first picked it up it was noticeable in the stiffer ride and initially  I thought I’d made a mistake especially when the Mrs commented and tbh I’d never have thought she’d notice. She did say it wasn’t to the detriment of the ride comfort or spoilt it. So that was a bonus. But now it’s just perfect with its tracking whilst pushing on in the corners and feels so planted it’s unreal. I’m on 19inch wheels which I think helps in the comfort stakes as the 20inch might make it feel a bit stiffer again. I haven’t ruled out going the 20inch route but at the moment am staying with the 19s so my feedback is only based on the 19s. It isn’t a daily but if it was I’d be happy and mostly my driving is on fast A/B roads here in Wales. Which as you might know has some awesome driving roads. I have also done quite a few stay cations tied in with National OCGB Rally’s. My car is a MY13 and when it was done the car only had 19k on it so the standard suspension was far from shot. If you asked me would I have it done now with what I now know then my answer would be YES definitely. Is it worth the 2.6k. Yes in my book. Hope this helps 👍

    Thanks for the feedback 👍

I am (like many) having an arguement in my head about if I want a warranty on the car.

Other than the engine mounts that come with the sports chrono package are there any other common issues/faults? I couldn’t find any.

The car has zunsport grills on the front that may invalidate a Porsche warranty. Are they easy to take off and on?

    Stu

I recently had the same argument and let my warranty lapse a few months ago. Then my mount went 🤣. But I'm still around £200 better off based on the cost of the 2 year warranty renewal. (until the other side goes!)

Main thought process I went though is what's a common failure that would be covered by warranty? Exhaust, mounts. That's about all I've really seen people claiming for frequently, the cars are fairly bullet proof. One consideration is the PDK box. Something like £12k if you need a new one, no one services them or fixes them, just a straight swap at Porsche if there is a fault. So some consider keeping the warranty for that.

If you are in warranty you do need to keep with OPC servicing (the extended warranty is an insurance so they can stipulate that unlike a new car warranty). So another saving to be had by using independents for servicing if you don't have warranty. If you car already doesn't have full OPC history they may demand you have it redone at the OPC before they will put a warranty on it.

So battery positive  and a convenient chassis earth.  (There is one listed in the handbook but it’s too far from the battery for the Ctek leads.  Sone put a bolt into a spare hole in the suspension turret top.  )

I found just separating the wires on the Ctek a bit more and I could reach the original designated earth point.
