May I suggest that not having a pdk service may be the cause of the lumpiness? Walk away, plenty available

TBH I wasnt really that set on it - as it was lacking some options for me - it was more that I could try it without wasting a personal sellers time. Interested to try the PDK and the larger engine.

I didn't generally find the PDK in my 987.2 lumpy, maybe a couple of times when the car was cold.

    I'd suggest try another.

The PDK in my 718 seems better still.

Most of the time is was nice - a couple of times I felt it shift odd - like it was confused. Once or twice in a 20 minute drive through town.

Have to ask - is it worth the money to go from a .1 to a .2?

I think you may be right.
If I didnt yet have one then a .2 might be the right entry but given then a really sorted earlier one 'feels' identical. I think if you have to have an Auto then the PDK is better.
Having said this, if a unicorn comes along I might still want to look ! Although an auto is now optional for me....

Thank you for all the comments - been massively helpful...

    Thanks.

Different engagement types due to the differing gearboxes- more analogue with the 6 speed manual and lazier/more comfortable driving style with the PDK 90% of my time but still with the option to override.

No wrong answers here, everyone likes something different, go find what works for you 👍

    Well.

I took a drive over to Leicester as there is a 2010 3.4 pdk - its up for 21K. Its done 50500. Its OK - not for me.

BUT - PDK which I though would be silky smooth wasnt in fact on one occasion it felt lumpy - not sure if that was just this one - but I kinda didnt fully like it. Sure it was easy driving round town but the revs sounded off to me coming from a manual.

I dont hate it but I do now get what you mean @iborguk, it was a supervised drive and also loads of traffic but the 3.4 did have the quicker feel I was hoping for.

It wasnt terrible but wasnt up to what I want to replace my what I consider good 987.1 - it had lots of tiny scratches around boot and doors, bonnet was rashed pretty bad. And might have had a rear bumper sprayed - was very close but did look off to me. Overall didnt seem to have been cherished?
Not had a PDK service despite age. Tyres were no name makes - tread ok but if I had bought would have needed changing. Typical main dealer no wriggle or inclination to replace - which I get.
Fly catchers were missing, no cruise or Sports Chrono, no extended leather

If it was a few £k cheaper I think it would be ok - if mine is worth 9k on a good day this was not 12k better

It would break your budget if I were to give you a price lol !

As Paul says, having Sport and Sport + with the PDK and PSE is great... nice to be able to turn PASM off when in those modes as well if you want to.

maybe not happy to have a private chat on it 🥸

Be prepared for a wait re a retrofit of a new PSE. Parts are still on back-order. I looked into doing this on my 987.2 prior to parting ways with it.

I have it on my current 987.1 and it is great - I might just go with a non standard exhaust - the oprions lottery is frustrating 🤣

Yes I made this move, totally different drives, loved both.

Anything in particular I can help with ?

lovely examples - when you say totally different can you explain at all what you mean?

One popped up today and sadly no sports chrono or cruise or extended leather - but good colour, low miles, sports seats but over 20k so by the time retrofitted cruise and sports plus its certainly creeping into Black Edition money

QQ - can you get PSE on a PDK I dont see many - wasnt sure if the sports was in place of the binoculars!!

so have managed to finish off the brake pipe replacements, thought the rear one over the gearbox would be a pig but was actually ok, i think it would be pretty impossible to replace with a factory steel line with engine and box in place.

Thankfully all the mega crusty caliper pipes came out without any problems

And then given an initial fill and bleed with the eazi-bleed, will give them another bleed off the pedal aswell.

Its now also been refilled with coolant, I did it the old fashioned way, ar*e up nose down and massaging all the rubber hoses, disconnecting the bleed hoses in the front wheel arches helped during initial fill. Have done a few heat cycles now and the amount needed to top up each time has gotten smller and smaller. I reckon ive got 22 ish litres back in so its not far off and the temps etc are behaving normally.

good to hear on the filling up - where has your car been though it does seem to have not faired well against the elements...

  9. yeah it would mean most of the electrics I would imagine - PDK ecu, Engine ECU, big swathes of harness - not for the faint hearted. Clocks and keys for immobilser...but if it was right price I could sell bits off mine and the remanants whilst not breaking even would not be the 11-12k uplift from selling my base 2.7 - as I'd do all the grunt work

dumb idea but we've seen successful crazy in here before...

I suspect the biggest hurdle would be the V5 and I imagine inspections and the like, so Red tape wins ...

  10. quick question - what is the parts compatibilty in terms of chassis? between a 987.1 and 987.2

so if I found a cheap 987.2 in salvage - is it impossible to swap parts across?

The dash looks the same, I know there was updates on panels but I wonder about bolting the engine and gearbox, brakes etc and any electrical gizmos across...

I know it would mean a ton of work but hypothetically...

  11. thanks @Boxer boy good info - seems like the 'base' .2 shouldnt be overlooked especially if its had some boxes ticked on the build sheet! - as Mattman said its parts of seconds - and the 3.4 .2 will have a little more whoosh

Its mental, as in my brain, the 2.7 .1 always felt a little lacking in the get up and go, I love everything else. Well the manual I dislike as we do a fair bit of city driving... but I didnt rate the tiptronics I tried.
That said Ive not driven a PDK, an Audi which is sort of similar - kind of- I have so ... figured it would be as good or better than that in terms of shifting

Also perhaps as Mattman also said - is it worth a few extra acceleration feels and an auto for what will be 10ish K? The answer at the minute for me is yes as the Boxster is one of the best cars I have owned, and if those 2 things made the next 4-5 years happy motoring then I think this is good!

    {Also I will likely dither so much that better 981's will be in financial reach...}

I had seen this and yes was low spec...not much in respect of options...

I had the 987.2 3.4 S pdk and now have a 987.2 2.9 pdk. Obviously there was a gap between ownership but I don't feel short changed on the performance stakes on a daily driver. Sports Plus would nice though, just to have that little extra reaction when you want it, that would be my only miss between the 2, but not enough to spend the hundreds needed to retrofit it :)

An S would always be nice,  it just wasn't worth the extra money for me this time. But if you can, test drive both, just to make sure!

did you mean a 987.1 3.4  to a 987.2 2.9? so if there was a good optioned one with Sports it would be a bit quicker feeling than the 2.7 987.1.... ?

  13. Thanks @Jono_h I’d be after the slower V6 ftype.

I wonder if there is anyone on here that has gone from a 987.1 2.7 manual to a 987.2 2.9 PDK…

I’ll maybe have a look at the 2.9… it would likely be a wee bit cheaper and that money could buy an exhaust…

    this is a good thread…

Having just done a similar change myself, I can confirm the change is worth it.

I believe you'd be very lucky though to sell a 73k 987.1 2.7 privately for as much as £10k or find a nice fully loaded nice 987.2 3.4S with reasonable milage or without an odd colour combinaton for as little as £20k.

I’m hoping that the rarer colour, PSE, 19”, cruise plus other bits will keep it up in that area. I mean 9k would also be ok. There’s a higher mileage black edition that I may consider. I’m in no rush particularly. I may sell mine and wait. Saving a few quid etc a month towards the next one.
    Or I might keep mine.

There are less 987.2s so if it doesn’t come along then I’ll probably goto a 981 or possibly an F type … but f types seem to still be falling too rapidly. I’m not buying for investment of course but I’m not sure I want to lose 10k in a couple of years either on a car. F types were 30 k  2 years ago… now 22 can buy you one.

  15. Agreed @Menoporsche the prices overlap now fairly often. Low mileage 987.2 being as observed in 981 money. And leggy 981 being in down in the pretty average 987.2 money.

I seem to keep my cars for longer now, 5ish years. And do not that many miles so a good car slightly high miles can work.

I think I’ll keep an eye out for the right spec and combo, there is a white one on AT for normal money. Has all the bits inside not keen on the wheels it has or the fact it’s white.
there’s another grey one that’s nicer but has the standard dash…

They do come up from time to time, keep an eye on auctions as they tend to be better prices... of course you are taking a gamble but there are some unicorns out there. :)

Where do I look for auctions? I wouldn’t know where to begin…

There are some higher mileage 981's now around the £20k mark - probably not an S but would feel like a proper change?

@Mattman42 I’m not overly sure, I’m torn. I’d like to have something a little quicker, acceleration wise. And I’m just wanting an auto, as modern traffic is tiresome these days.
981 I think I would be sacrificing condition, as I would be buying at the bottom. I’ve always tried to buy the best example for the lowest money… which I guess everyone tries to do.
