Cracked oil filler tube did this on mine. When I moved the tube it sheared completely. It's a pain to fit a new one as there is a join right under the engine cover, where it goes into the filler neck on the boot.

Ive got a cracked oil filler neck but i dont have a unstable idle.. dont think it can be that bad at the mo. I do need to get round to biting the bullet and handing it over to a garage to replace it.

Vacuum leak …. Cracked oil filler tube, dodgy AOS , expose engine and spray around with WD40 when it’s running and see if it steadies out.

When you say spray around? You on about the serpentine belt area? The pulleys etc?

The only real world test I have is that in long tests on my standard Impreza turbo I spent the same on fuel whether 98 or 95

Yeah the jap old school turbo cars throw a hissy fit with lower ron fuel. I've got real world experience of 2 MR2 turbos and a Celica GT4 over the years.

The 986 ive used 95 over the winter months and didnt notice any difference but then i wasnt really driving it hard too often either, now im back on the 98 but then i used Shell for both 95 and 98. Trust it over the other brands based on my past car experiences.

Get stainless steel screws, many of us have, only a few pennies off eBay,

Yes, I know another project for the list.

That's an easy one though. 🙃

'Whilst I was in there...' I rerouted the emergency latch cable into the toe eye.

Although after I took that pic I pulled the wire out of the clip it ran through to allow easier pulling when needed.

Thanks friends. All very useful information.

I decided to take the plunge and arranged for Nick Giles to conduct an inspection on the car. I informed the dealer who told me that an inspection was strictly not allowed. They find that inspections place a tension between customer and trader which is not needed.

I decided that I value £10k far too much not to get a £200 inspection done, so i let the car go.

That's the first time I've heard a inspection be rejected. That really does make you curious as to what they are trying to hide.

Since you have let it go, would you mind sharing the link here for the car.

There is a large heat shield above the exhaust close to the underside of the body, this relies on a single fasting in the middle for a large amount of its support.

It's a bit hard to access as the Exhaust is in the way but it is possible to get a long screwdriver to give a poke to see if it's still attached.

Mine was rattling, I managed to get to the fastening and use a large repair washer to secure it. I don't have a standard exhaust though, so access was easier.

So before I attempt to take the bumper off and inspect the hidden heat shield, is there an easier way to check if that's the culprit of my rattling?

Found this good vid showing how to take the rear bumper off all be it the us bumper with the bump stops.

£7.50?  They saw you coming mate, mine have just arrived and they were only £7.09 😂

Pretty good quality I reckon, and they fit nice and tight 👍

Mine had the black and white design, and they still look OK so I'll probably put them back on in winter.

Here's a gratuitous pic after a quick wash this morning, with the new wheel caps fitted:

So mine have just arrived and look like decent quality for the price.. I can see from your close up pic that its like mine and looks to have a plastic film over the crest and im really wanting to peel it off but not sure if its meant to stay there! 😛

Is it supposed to be just for postage protection or is it meant to be there long term as ive got the urge to attack it with a blade to take it off. 😐

Night Breakers for me. Noticeable difference.

    LED sides & indicator.

Not teaching anyone to suck eggs, but dont touch the glass when installing.

Amazing how many people love to touch. 🤨

Interestingly I've always used led side lights but didn't think to use them on the 986.

Make much if a difference and which ones did you go for? Did you do front and rear led side lights and indecators?

  9. I suppose the main question is how do you drive your 986 currently? Do you thrash it round country lanes or enjoy the more relaxed driving experience with it?

If the latter then you won't miss the handling as much when you move to a 996 going by all the accounts I've read of people owning both. If however you love the handling aspect then you maybe disappointed.

Other option you got is to buy a hard top for the 986.

With regards to values, they seem to be all over the shop so finger in the air but having said that, you viola metallic is stunning and rare.

Did you get the metal membership card in the glossy presentation box?

I notice there is an expiry date of Feb 2025. Do you have to reapply? 🤔

**edit** Just read the T&Cs and yes, it only runs for 2 years. I guess thats to check you still own the car.

By the time my pack arrives, I'd have retired/expired.

  11. Today I have the car a good shakedown test in North Leeds countryside to test the suspensions etc.

All felt solid but different to what I was used to for almost 2 years of driving on 20 year old suspension.

Interestingly since I replaced the knackered exhaust clamps with proper oem wide ones from Porsche,  I've not had the James bond plooms of smoke I used to get randomly when getting the car running hot on a spirited run.

I know it's got a cracked oil filler neck too apparently and that can lend itself to causing issues with the aos as well but I think it was the loose exhaust clamps playing havoc with the o2 sensor post cat.

I'm now in two minds on whether to replace the AOS yet.

There are also welded on heat shields on the downpipes before the cats. Those can also rust loose and usually makse noice only when hot and expanded due to heat. This is very hard to search out since the exhaust has to be very hot...

There is also a chance that some rocks find their way to go between these heatshields and downpipes then rattle there. This is easier to find out with light taps on rubber mallet to these heat shields.

Where you based as I'm coming down! 👀 you seem to have the knowledge to solve my issue! 🤣

Replaced both rear droplinks and anti roll bar bushes but still have a knock.  2 x rear tuning forks ordered from Spyder Performance.  Hopefully that sorts it or I will lose half of everything in the divorce.

After doing the full suspension refresh Inc the drop links, track rod etc etc... I've cleared all those noises which now allows me to hear the just slightly lower noises that were being masked by the 20 year old suspension. :suicide_anim:

I was never aware of this specific heat shield! Any pics would be amazing as it's doing my head in when it gets really hot and expands amd starts rattling. I presume ita this bugger as the others I've removed one and secured the other over the cats.

  15. Each to their own mate, i think the point of the suggestion was the unit itself is easier to sand when it's off the car rather than the time it takes to take it out.

I've had mine out about 7 times in 2 years and theres no wiring to concern yourself over. The whole unit just slides out without any exposed wires to worry about exposing. 👍

As I said, we all have our own prefered methods. I know I can be clumsy so would be safer for my fat hands to be away from the paintwork when sanding. 🤣
