Took the car for it’s 4 wheel alignment.

It took just under 2 hrs and now its spot on. Cost was £144

Even though it rides on standard springs I asked for the Boxster S geo.

The technician who performed the alignment said “I recognize this car, its been sat on axle stands for weeks”. He was really interested to hear what I’ve been doing to it during that time.

On the short drive in traffic I could feel the difference.

Alignment was done on the Hunter system at York Tyre Sales in Murton, I’ve had a car aligned there before after suspension replacement and they did a good job.

Care to share the printout? I used Atec Align in Huddersfield and the chap was spot on. 🙂👌

Been a busy weekend. Went to go see Paul on the weekend so he could look over my car and give me his opinion. Very knowledgeable guy and very helpful. Needless to say what with all the different mismatched springs, worn bushes and missing bump stops I have decided to give the car to him for a suspension refresh - front to start with and then I'll save for the rear. Also, to prevent me cocking things up, I have asked him to take care of the coil packs, spark plugs and tubes replacement. It's going in for surgery at the end of the month and I'll collect a few days later.

I did manage to finally (!) cure the screeching sound on my left rear wheel today. The disc was impacting on the backing plate behind the handbrake shoes. Not anymore after I went to work with an angle grinder and cut away the offending bits. I know some people will say I shouldn't cut things away - there's a reason why it's making contact etc. All I can say is I am very happy I did so. The silence is marvellous. No longer do I drive down the road sounding like a bunch of monkeys fighting in a bucket of marbles while falling down a staircase.

I also adjusted the handbrake so it's now actually holding the car.

Very pleased with myself. I think I'll celebrate by going for a nice drive :)

Nice work with the angle grinder! The moment you fix something like that is like a weight is lifted off your shoulders and you can drive around without being embarrassed! I need to still sort my pads out and clean up the brake shims etc as mine sequels when it gets hot.

Replaced rear ARB bushes. I could create a bit of a knock on the N/S but the O/S looked a bit more worn. Bar itself in good nick. Improved, but think I will replace the drop links as well. Anyone fitted the spyder performance drop links. A very good price compared to TRW. Over double the price.

I put Meyle on mine but spyder performance will be spot on as well mate. I used their front forks and coffin arm set.

  4. Having driven from Bradford to scunny and back in a day on the Mways steady at 70/75 i did think Cruise would have been nice to have.

Id go cruise, larger throttle body and remap, exhaust. If i was to advise anyone else who hasnt already, 9x7 shifter and suspension upgrade as they have been the best things ive done so far to date. The shifter is the best bang for buck improvement i made on the car and its easy to DIY.

I did it a couple months back on my 2003 S and it was money well spent mate. You will love it.

Took the car out for the first time in about a month as the sun had finally come out.  Went to a little local car show, on the way I thought the pedal felt a bit wobbly. I've already had the thing apart to try and fix the common wobbly pedal issue. Anyway, on the way home the pedal fell apart, leaving me coasting down a busy A-Road with nowhere to pull off.  I could see a layby just metres away on the other side, but I just run out of forward momentum.

I looked over at my boy, who's only five and enjoyed our last breakdown moment on the way back from Simply. He had recently confessed he almost cried but managed to stop himself, he was looking like he was fighting the same battle as before.  I told him it would be ok, I can fix it and if not we have the RAC.  Also, there was a Police car in the layby, so I'm sure they will help.

I didn't have the space to get out and lie on the floor to fix it due to the cars whizzing by so I was trying to fix it from the driver's seat, but as you can imagine this is pretty much impossible. Moments later the Police pulled up on the other side of the road to see if we were ok, I explained the situation and he kindly offered to tow me to the layby, he even said he would take me home but we both agreed the neither of us like towing.

Before he had finished whinding the tow rope back up, I had the pedal back together and we were on our way.

    😮

Firstly glad you got lucky with the copper and also hope your poor boy wasnt too traumatised by the breakdown bless him.

Hopefully you know what needs fixing to stop this happening again and knowing some of the A roads by you, that could have been worse if it was dark which i presume it wasnt.

It's a pile of cr*p, do you want to sell it?

Should be cheaper now with an extra owner on the V5?

I am very pleased to have finally added a beautiful mellow yellow 981 alongside my Macan S, courtesy of a very nice gentleman of this Parish.

Congrats mate... Welcome to the nut house. :)

I think the ones that don't have them in are either not Boxster S models i.e. without drilled discs, or a previous fitter has chosen not to put them in.  Read the 6th post on the thread you linked to.

Yeah read that but didn't know if that was a US car oddity like they usually have different quirks to EU cars. 👍

Check you have the dampening plates fitted, like pad shims but with two cylinders of aluminium that fit inside the caliper pistons.

So do all have them fitted as standard as a thread i read here said some had them and others didnt.

Also i might just take the thing apart and just inspect whats needed then put it back all greased and cleaned up before putting the new pads in. Learn a bit as i go along.

If they dont have them i'll grab a set of these.

However, it’s been a pleasure to do and I’ve learned lots. Granted its mostly about Boxster parking brakes, and that has to be useful. Doesn’t it?

That sounds great and im looking to do similar soon when the weather bloody picks up again!

I've bought some Textar front pads and was thinking of getting new pins too but until i take the old ones off i dont know if they are needed. I get a lot of squealing when they get hot and i have a bit of friction too when coming to a stop.

Plan is to replace the brake pads and grease up the retaining spring plate thing... Where's the best place to grease up when changing them as its the first time i will be attempting it.

I've not had any M PS4 experience, my recent comparison was with Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2 (still have these on the front) which I found pretty impressive.

Not knowing the grip difference between the two but i presume with new fresh rears and older fronts you would get a bit more understeer when pushing it along bendy roads?

And yes... initial feedback on new tyres fitted vs long term can be a different story. I used to run Toyo Proxes on my MR2 turbo as they had a softer sidewall compared to the other options and the grip was amazing but my god did they wear out fast. One set of rears lasted me about 5k miles and granted the nature of the turbo delivery didnt help but still.. they fell off the cliff quite quick.

Got to give a shout out to the new GY Asymmetric 6 tyres on the rear.  1000 miles in and in the dry - amazing grip and in the wet, amazing grip for the conditions.  I was on unfamiliar and fairly narrow roads so no hooning, but not once did I feel the rear want to break away even a little bit, stunning compared to previous rubber.

That sounds like high praise. Have you used PS4s on the car in the past as a comparison? Ive found them impressive but dont have anything decent to compare them against as i know the same tyre works differently on different cars.

Wasn't aware of that, thanks for the heads up.

to be fair it could just be a random thing with the wiper blade but the water marks are deffo consistent. I just hose off the window with fresh water when its in the drive. Its not a biggie.. :)

Not today, but yesterday I cleaned the roof and then treated it with 2 coats of Fabsil Gold, seems to have done the trick.

Just wait till it starts to run onto your windscreen and then dry up leaving hard to remove water marks! :D

Also due to the rain and it running onto my new blades the right side has started to bounce on its way back down due to friction. 😛

Hope you don’t mind me reviving.

A quick one on the above - did you get this sorted?

Dont mind at all mate.. :)

I didnt bother with messing with it in the end as it's not dripping and going by the way it looked the mechanic wasnt too concerned with it but i thought id ask on here just in case anyone else had dealt with it. (also had other higher things on the 'to do' list at the time)

Sorry to hear yours is getting worse. Please let us know how you get on with it as im sure others like myself would find it useful and good luck!

I’ve been waiting nearly 2 weeks on a response about the Scottish zones as my cars V5 shows NOx is 0.004 so last night I thought I’d try making an enquiry on the English CAZ site since all but Birmingham and Bristol were already showing as no charge.

I didn’t bother with the Certificate of Conformity, just sent a note of the NOx value and a copy of my V5, they’ve already replied to confirm they agree and I’m now showing as no charge on all the English zones and more importantly for me this has also fixed the Scottish site, although I rarely feel the need to drive in cities it’s nice to know the car is no longer worthless to me or a future owner who may want to do so!

Thanks to all for the really helpful advice.

Amazing result and yeah that's what I thought would be the case that they use the same Database for the v5 details.

The fact the English CAZ got back to you ASAP and it's sorted the Scottish system out too is a win.

Couple of points to note - if your AC still works, there will be refrigerant in the system, this should be removed before undoing any connections.

Totally dead... the ac pump engages as the speed of the fan changes when the button is pressed but zero cooling air.

When I did get it recharged before it lasted for about 3 to 4 months or so. I'm presuming that would indicate a leak and going by the state of my condensors I'd get them changed first.

The gas travels through the blades, the fins just to increase surface area.

Pretty much what I thought. 👍

The factory condensers have plastic trims top & bottom, aftermarket don’t have the holes for these.

Yup I saw them when cleaning out the rads.ĺ

Some say you should replace the dessicator too - I’m going to this time.

    What's the dessicator?
