Carefull, you may have a Schodinger's IMS bearing, you've only been safe upto now because you don't know.

I do not plan to look in the box at the Cat ;) I am sure my bearing is doing fine.. 178k now...

Back on track.

Brought mine for £2700 in July 2016.

It's a 2000, 986S with113k Miles.

I knew it wasn't great, but the overall 'condition' looked as though it had been a very loved car through 80-90% of its life and more importantly (to me) probably garaged through much of its life. Service History wasn't complete, but where it was, the service history, at the beginning and the end, had been done at main dealers, including recent'ish full major. Very clean in all the normal areas of concern, but test drive was only 5 mins as both outside front rads had gone (60 miles home I used the frunk and trunk full of the cheapest still water I could buy to keep topping the water up whenever I got stopped in traffic). Clutch and flywheel had gone, suspension was suspect. Lots of clunking and, as I'd previously owned (and spent a fortune on!) a 996, I knew, more or less, what the solutions would be.

Huge bill, nearly twice purchase price (see below), to get it into a decent state - although I've done the cosmetic bits myself.

Internal bits had been red carbon wrapped and door cards 'destroyed' with aftermarket 'wicked' large speakers....all now returned to normal.

I wanted a project rather than someone else's. When I brought it I didn't have the space to do any of the work so had to get it done at an indy. I wanted to know that the bits had been changed in my ownership, not 3k miles ago in someone else's and then not knowing what the car had done since.

It had a new 'glass screen' roof, which I think is Porsche OEM - but I might be wrong.

I had originally intended to strip it out, make it as light as possible, and wrap in Miami Blue, but this plan has got over taken by events.......

Will now start to look at doing mechanicals myself.

Then (after purchase)....

12K service

New ignition switch

Airbag system check

Replace 2 radiators

Aircon condensors

New clutch

New Flywheel

Spark plugs and tubes

Exhaust clamps

Front top mounts

Lower control arms (front and rear)

Alignment

CV boot

Fuel filler cap

New key

New (refurb) aircon head unit

New (Douglas Valley - DV) door cards

Replacement OEM door speakers (DV).

New (DV) and then paint centre console

Replacement gear stick (DV)

Refurbed Wheels, hubs and brakes

Respray rear bumper

To do - 'Needs'

Exhaust bypass or similar, it's too quiet.

New rubber - still riding on very cheap tyres brought (I suspect) to get through the MOT.

Possible re map

@Allatsea, that's a fully developed Greek tragedy!

My "best buy" was a 1997 which was described by its truthful owner as slightly "tatty". Paid 2,000 GBP as it was damaged in 2 accidents (both at the front and at the rear). But nothing major... Good service history and wonderful people, the owners. A friend broke it and he has been delighted with both, the engine and the gear box.

Look at the owner, too. (I lost 2,500 pounds falling for a Gumtree scam). Do check the MoT records. Has the car been neglected?!? My 6-speed S needed an awful lot of parts to be put right. The MoTs were littered with reports of all kinds of shortcomings, corroborating neglect.

Going by engine numbers can be a little hit and miss.

The only definitive way is to pull the gearbox and look at the IMSB cover:

If you listen carefully, very easy to spot double row and single row difference while the engine on idle. Double row cars (pre2000) runs a bit louder than the single-row examples, assuming there is not any other mechanical fault that causes any noise. I think it was one of those little upgrades/updates that being introduced with 2.7 and 3.2 back in 2000, saying now they run a bit quieter. :)

Not sure about estimating the size of the depression, but if that part number is visible when on the car, surely that's a lot easier? Ends in (40)1, single row. Ends in (70)2, double row.

My wife's first car, thats for her, not because of kids or job, and she loves it. Reaching 50 next year, she decided she needed her own mid life Porsche. Great eBay purchase £3100. 111k on the clock. Needs a little tlc. So far we've treated it to front discs and pads, plus service. A full set of Falkens from Event Tyres £235 bargain, the old tyres were 10 years old:o

Next on the list is to source a new key, OPC want £350! At the mo, it's key in the door lock old school.

Then sort the Check Engine light, the fault PO300 Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

and sort wet bottom passenger door, so probably plastic membrane split ?

Anyway Hello everyone.

I usally hang out on 911uk

2001, 3.2, 100k, off a friend who paid strong money but took dealer to court due to defects (not major)

he he got all his money back!

What were the defects? A rare success story taking a dealer to court and winning. You’d have thought the dealer would’ve wanted his car back as he gave a full refund!

Porsche specialist ripped car apart, discs slightly warped (measured using dti gauge, no pedal or steering judder under braking)

main issue was gearbox second gear synchro, although not that bad in my opinion, for a car that’s done 100k and is 17 year old.

it is worn, but livable with for now as it’s okay unless you really give it a pasting!

That's a tactic I must remember, buy with warranty and get a specialist to go over it with a fine tooth comb!! Lol It's easy to forget it's a 17 years old car, if you don't notice it I wouldn't worry about it. I bet the gearbox issue improves once the oil is warm?

No in fact it doesn’t, but it happens so infrequently I’m not too bothered at this stage...

its had new tyres, mot, and is currently in the body shop having the rear bumper painted as it had a poor repair done previously... all little things,

ill keep my eyes peeled for a decently priced gearbox and when I change it I’ll fit the updated ims bearing... I’m sure it’s an investment and if I come to sell it I know it’s 100%

Warped discs that cant be felt when driving and a slightly notchy 2nd gear... sounds like your mate was looking for issues.

No offence to him. But I bet over 50% of 986’s have this. Good luck finding a 986 that doesnt have a stiff second gear change when cold, mine’s had a rebuild and it’s still iffy on the first cold 1st to 2nd change.

Ah well, you bridged the gap for him and got a stonking car for £1500! Congrats!

@Araf is it worth making this thread sticky. There are some really helpful stories in here for entry level 986 buyers...?

Only because there aren't any skickies in this area yet.  I hate it when front pages are full of them. :)

Wow, it appears that prices on my side of the world are a bit higher than in the UK.  I thought I had made a really good buy at $5300.USD (3900.pounds) for my 98 with 95K miles and a hardtop.  Locally similar vintage Boxsters are going for $7 to $10K.  The hardtop is a really nice option here in Seattle during the rainy season from Oct. to May.  The car also came with the original window sticker, owners manuals and a new uninstalled softtop with glass rear window.  As others have pointed out there are no cheap Porsches.  I've replaced the AOS, a CV boot, coolant expansion tank, front and rear trunk support struts, and added 2 (very expensive) additional keys.  After adding in Taxes, licensing fees and the cost of those repairs, I figure I'm into the car for about what I could sell it for, at least that's what I'm telling my wife...
