Where Does Your 986 Rank in Your All Time Cars Owned List

Thought this might be interesting as I was thinking about it the other day (apologies if it's been done before)

For me its third /fourth in my list of the cars I've had so far

1 .. VX220 it was my third car ever (and daily for 2 years) but a massive step up. The rarity, the driving experience, the VX community, it changed my life. 

2 .. 205 GTI. Everything you've read about the 205 is right. Fun all the time. Made £4k on it too which was good. 

3 .. 986 or MkV Golf GTi. Tough one. I did love how capable the Golf was. Literally every box ticked if you only run one car. But the 986 is very special.

5 .. Integra Type R. Mega. But you have to be in the mood and thrash it to enjoy it.

I don’t like to change cars very often thus my list wouldn’t be long anyway...

But Off the top of my head...

1. current car (3 years & counting) Not much to say other than... epic

2. 997tt (4.5 years)  First foray into 911 ownership, very capable daily, so easy to drive slow or fast, hated first gear though.

3. 986 (owned same car twice 😂  even think I’d go third time lucky if I got the chance)

4. Macan DS (still own) just a fantastic comfortable cruiser.

5. Astra SRI 2.2 (2001yr) (My first real modern fun car) was a great fast Vauxhall ( think the engine was the same as the VX220 @Hit The North ) and loved the interior.

Difficult question as when you grow up you you enjoy different things..  but 

Escort RS Turbo..180bhp 

Evolution iii ... 280 Bhp 

Evolution 4... 320 Bhp.. I built the engine from the crank up in my garage with with evo 9 GT piston and Evo 6 crankshaft,  sold it to a guy who came from Germany for it..

Evolution 6..  366 Bhp.. variable boost controller .. 

Quickest car I've ever been in is between 580bhp Evo, and a 600Bhp Lamborghini Aventador brand new

Not sure that suits the topic title! Are we now talking about fastest cars you’ve been in or fastest cars you’ve owned? Not sure it was even about BHP figures either, what does that really matter? Nevertheless you seem bloody handy with a spanner having built one or two.

Just an overall talk pal of past cars and figures

1. current 986s, I've put 140k miles on it which says it all really

2. 964 911 c4, loved this car, but I was optimistic to try and use it as a daily.  It was certainly reliable enough, but wasn't comfortable sitting on the M25 for 4 hours a day.  Stunning to look at though!

3. MK4 Golf GTi, I put a lot of miles on this car too.  Had it mapped to around 200 bhp, upgraded the suspension and rear ARB and put an anniversary kit on it.  It was such a nice looking car and surprisingly drivable after the rear ARB was added.  

4. E36 M3 Evo, even though it tried to kill me several times this car was great fun to drive.  As in feedback was terrible and it had no traction control.  I'll never forget reversing it into a central reservation at 50mph on it's side and having to wait 3 hours for a police flatbed to tow me out.  At least 50% of the cars that drove past gave me a toot and called me a w*anker which was great fun .  

5. Escort RS2000 (1992), best handling front wheel drive car I've owned.  I think the Focus suspension setup was based on this car, it didn't really understeer, but did a controlled 4 wheel slide instead.  I had it mapped to a whopping 172 bhp and it was epic.

6. Astra GTE 16v (the one with the Cosworth head),  This car was fast for it's time, but unfortunately couldn't go round corners or in a straight line really!  Fond memories of continually being pulled by the police for driving without my lights on because of the bloody digital dashboard.

it’s interesting reading how people got to Or from their Porsche’s. Had a colleague with an Evo, it was such stunning looking car but I was always afraid of the rumours of a chocolate engine which were probably just that, rumours, as I have no evidence or experience.

My pre-986 (and other current) car history is way too woeful for me to join in.

As I’ve always driven as part of my work so my cars have typically been workhorses rather than anything else. 

That said my 986 is after 12 years my favourite of all the cars I’ve owned or driven - in the time I’ve had the thing it has been tracked, road tripped and daily driven. It’s significantly tweaked from factory and the mischief continues. The only standard parts now are the bodyshell, electrics and interior. 

For context I have daily access to an old school Range Rover Sport as well as an Evoque and I’m lucky enough to own a 1982 911 SC.

I love driving.

The 911 is a long way from standard with a 3.6l 993 motor plus 911 Turbo damping/spring and 911 Turbo brakes. 300+bhp and very responsive with relatively short gearing, loads of N/A type torque and late 70’s/early 80’s handling means that although it stops it is, well, a bit of a handful.  

Great fun, reliable but OMG you absolutely, definitely have to be on your game once you are past 4/10ths.....

It is Epic.

Despite all these characterful cars (yes - even the Evoque) I’d keep the Boxster over all of them, even the 911.

I ‘heard’ the engine blocks were lightweight aluminium or something similar, I can’t remember exactly to be honest but the rumour was they needed rebuilding often if used heavy. 
As I say I may be totally wrong (as always) and I can’t even recall what year EVO it was but it was around year 2005

3. Chrysler Alpine, Mini 850, Austin Montego, Rover Maestro, Rover Montego, Mk4 escort, Seat Alhambra, Mk3 Fiesta, VW Passat B7, Peugeot Partner. Some inherited, none sold. The ones that didn't eventually crumble into dust or get on the sharp end of other peoples accidents were given away.

As suggested by others it's hard to rank conclusively, as you mature generally your car preference tends to mature too, but here goes:

1. 986 S (current fun car)

2. mk1 Golf GTI cabriolet (liked it so much I covered over 200k miles in it)

3. 1992 Clio 16v (137BHP and weighed nothing, so felt like a lot in 1994)

4. MX-5 1.8iS NB (fabulous litte car, ran for almost 9yrs & toyed with turbo'ing it etc but got 986 instead)

5. mk2 Golf GTI 16v (fun in a grown up way compared to mk1).

I fear I did more miles in my 205 GTIs in a total of 12 months, as a free spirit in his early 20s, than my Boxster in 10 years, as a middle-aged boring git with kids who got a ticket early on for 120mph and slowed down considerably since then

We thrashed 5 EVO 6 Tommi Makkinens at PalmerSport for 3 seasons.  If you ever did a PalmerSport day in one you'll know I mean thrashed...  Engines wise we had to rebuild one dur to a piston failure IIRC which isn't bad given the level of abuse.

We did break 6 transfer box cases though and Mitsubishi had only ever shipped 7 replacements for these in the UK at that point.  The other was for the press fleet I'm told.  Our failures may have had something to do with fitting a spool diff in the rear.....

Good call this, but as mentioned earlier as you get older priorities change (kids and Mortgages), lots to choose from including RS turbos but here goes.....

1. Lamborghini Countach 1984 C reg, bought in 2001 as a wrecked race car and rebuild, 5k per cylinder head and total rebuild that I did myself, cost a fortune, lost money on it (lots) did 200 miles a year in it but boy was it amazing. (look at the price of these now!! I sold it for 30K in 2005)

2. TVR Chimaera, brute of a car, well sorted and totally reliable did 8mpg on a good day (when using it properly)

3.Boxster 987.2 2.9, current car garaged, lovely car very well put together but a little frustrating due to where the engine is (I like to tinker).

4. Merc SLK 350, fast fun and bullet proof. owned for 4.5 years without a single issue.

5. Renault 5 Turbo, fitted with a garret turbo and overboost, most fun with your clothes on possible.

6. Opel manta GTE, twin headlights and Irmscher bodykit, 2nd gear went on forever and was styled beautifully ( I was 22 yo)

 

There are many others but these stick with the me the most, would love to include my bikes! Oh, forgot to mention I have a very understanding wife!

I've had loads but here goes.

1. 1974 Triumph GT6 mk3. A bit slow a bit noisy, but looked fabulous and so enjoyable to own as a hobby car.

2. 1999 Boxster that I still have.

3. 1985 Fiesta XR2 when I was a yoof  back in the early 90s.

4.  2006 Fiesta ST.

5. 1995 Peugeot 106xsi. Great little car that seemed fast at the time.

And tons of other stuff!😁

1. 205 GTi - first car so lots of fond memories - thrashed it to within and inch of it's life, it lasted 3 years before I managed to kill it.

2. Porsche 924 - the original Poor mans Porsche, loved the looks and it would get far more attention than the boxster ever does, silent on the motorway at 80mph - Guards Red with brown pasha interior crazy 70's styling.

3. 986 - fun, handling and noise  :)

4. Renault 5 Turbo - whizbang, handled like shyatee but in a straight line with a few mods was pretty crazy, I don't recall anything beating it at the traffic light grand prix.

I had a Vauxhall Viva HC on a J plate

The last owner had painted the whole car in silver hammerite to stop it rusting (that failed to work)

The windscreen washers where operated by stamping on a floor mounted plunger.

The floor was so rotten I once stamped on it and my foot went through the floor..!
