Disappointing aftermarket suppliers, i must be jinxed... or using the wrong ones

I'm starting to think im jinxed...

About 6-8 weeks ago i ordered the gt3 smile vent kit, mesh and fitting kit from design911, the items were on sale so assumed they must have had some stock.

Sadly that wasn't the case, they had the fitting kit, and the mesh just not the vent itself, these were on back order.

As my car was in the garage i thought it possbile to have this fitted at the same time, so i called and asked if there was a delivery date or some idea when it was due.

I was told there was no delivery due date from the supplier in the usa and no ETA or anything else.... ok guess we better cancel that order then please.

So i cancelled, asked for a refund, was told it would take a week to process and left it at that.

About a week later i got an email telling me my parcel was leaving the warehouse and on its way!!!

erm, what parcel?

Called them again, they were just about to ship the fitting kit and the mesh...erm do we have a date for the vent then? Oh no thats on indefinite back order..... So when i spoke to you lats week and said cancel the order? Ah some mis-understanding, let me take your details, I will dash downstairs and stop this leaving and we will process your refund.. ok.

Another week goes by, I get a refund, but only for about 40% of the total paid... Back on the phone again, it seems they are only refunding me the out of stock item, not the other two items as they are in stock and can be delivered... so tell me why would i need a fitting kit and the mesh for a vent kit thats on indefinite back order?

Finally some 3-4 weeks later i finally got a full and correct refund.

This week as my car is due in for its yearly check over, i decided to order a new BMC air filter to go with the de-snork, i noticed Design911 have some, but slightly nervous after the above issue of taking money for items not in stock, i decided to purchase from porscheshop where it was about £15 cheaper and more importantly the website says in stock, Hurrah!

Placed the order over easter, shipped out Tuesday received today, opened the box and....... I've been sent an air filter by a company called "Spyder performance" I check online, these filter are £12 direct from the manufacturer, but ive been charged £81 hmmmmmm tried to call porscheshop, apparently they are closed for covid and dont take calls, but you can order online - yes i noticed that..

So i complete a helpdesk ticket via the website, as apparently you need to discuss with them to send a return back (interestingly it also quotes a re-stocking fee!) and also says i have to pay return postage (on top of the £9.99 postage charged to send it).

Am i just being unlucky in the first things ive ordered from specialists are proving to be poor, or am i using the wrong companies completely.....

Probably a bit of both. Porscheshop have a pretty bad reputation.  Design911 seem a bit hit and miss. I ordered shocks from them assuming they had stock but no had to wait several weeks with no delivery date. In the end, as i was having trouble getting H& R springs elsewhere i tried to cancel the order only to receive an e mail telling me they had just been despatched. I checked the tracking and the info was indeed correct. Ironically given your experience the best service i've had recently was from Spyder Performance. Ordered full set of front suspension parts on a Sunday, despatched Monday, received Tuesday and perfectly packaged with each item individually boxed. And delivery only £7.50 too.

It's also wise to check with the nearest OPC too. I ordered springs a couple of weeks ago, cheaper than anywhere else, and i had them within a week, posted out free of charge.

I've ordered parts from 4 different suppliers today. The first two items were from Carparts4less. They arrived at my door just 90 minutes after I placed the order. I was astonished. I'll wait for all the parts to arrive before booking with a mechanic. It'll be interesting to compare the performance of each supplier.

Ordered lightech chain adjusters for the bike over 3 weeks ago. Order would not go through online so I call them, girl takes order and payment, charging me more as not an online purchase, then informs me not in stock.

Contact them after a week, not in yet, get partial refund to cover extra cost from buying over phone.

After 3 weeks, email them and ask for order to be cancelled and refund sent, reply saying no problem. 4 hours later email from sails, parts will be in end of week and as an apology they will include a £25 gift card. Reply that I've cancelled order, they reply they will see that the refund is processed, I reply asking why it had not already been processed from earlier in the day.

Ordered Gilles adjusters from ebay and a shockingly priced titanium axle safety nut yesterday morning, arrived today at 4pm.

Wow.  Have you checked the original parts are still on your car, it's not up on bricks?

I've not heard any good things about porsche shop so I wouldn't feel too bad about that one.  Design 911 have been pretty reliable in my experience but they do charge a premium for items which can be sourced directly from OPC for less.

If its an original part you want, try an OPC first for a price before hunting elsewhere.

Well i ordered the BMC from design911 as called and confirmed its in stock (bit annoying you have to do that to check), and to be fair its been despatched already so hopefully my original vent re the vent (see what i did there?) was a one off....

Still no response from porscheshop about returning the spyder filter tho.....

Lol, I'm stumped as to what to do next. The website just leads you up a blind alley to a dead end. I'd love to have a one punch conversation with that scrawny little turd that owns them!

Write a complaint email and after 8 weeks you can get the CAA involved I believe

My experience with Design911 was quite interesting. I once spoke to one of the sales team about 993 centre caps as I wanted to replace all 4. They had originals in stock but also some aftermarket ones too which were say a tenth of the cost. I explained I was quite particular about my car and wasn’t happy to put anything on but was told ‘I have both right here in front of me and they look identical’ so obviously I thought I would save some money and buy them.
Well when they arrived I opened the parcel and couldn’t believe my eyes, identical 🤣 what a joke, they really were ridiculous so sent straight back. I was so unimpressed I would never use  or trust them again. Also took ages for collection as I was not going to pay to return them as I had specifically rang them about placing the order and the refund was very slow too. So I guess you are not alone!

Thats he problem when ordering via a website that doesnt have a stock indicator or time on parts

Pretty pi$$ poor service from D9 really, Porscheshop...............well expected

I try and pay via Paypal when buying online, their backup is top quality, as an example I purchased about 6 items of clothing from a Chinese website (yeah I know!) and after a few weeks I received a package of 4 items, only 1 was what I had selected, the other 3 were different designs and colours, after 4 or 5 emails with the Chinese and being offered $5 to keep them or send them back to us for a credit (at my expense) I raised a claim on Paypal, anyway, 4 weeks later I received a full refund from Paypal and still have the items! The other 2 items came in a few weeks later, also nothing like what I had ordered!!

Credit card company?  Debit card chargeback?  I used a chargeback once for a *bank* that took a payment without my authorisation (for any investment) and they claimed it was not refundable because of charges applied when the investment was made.  Turns out that invoking a chargeback puts the money back in your account and the recipient of authorised charge gets screwed over....who knew?

I've also had success getting refunds via PayPal for failed deliveries or wrong items but it has taken a lot more than 4 weeks in most cases, usually 2-3 months of back and forth.

Design911 have just notified me that one item I've bought is out of stock. Fortunately, nothing is urgently required.

THey have a website, so surely stock management is not totally beyond them, I don’t quite like the idea of someone selling me something they do not have... hence I’ve taken to calling them these days before I order.

Don’t get me going on travel refunds, I am seriously upside down on that one post covid...

I had a family holiday for 7 booked with virgin, we rolled that onto this year, tho the pleasure cost me 3K on top of the 14k original cost.

my wedding anniversary trip to Vegas was booked independently, I stupidly took miles from norwegian air instead of cash (we were due to fly the first week of lockdown, how little we knew then), Norwegian on the brink of bankruptcy and no longer fly to the USA so not likely to be redeemed any time soon.
the accommodation we also took credit, but Airbnb only allow you to delay and take credit once so as it moved backwards through the year i have been subjected to cancellation rules as we now all know about covid so it was std cancellation rules after the first one so having moved it the credit just gets eaten away on its normal cancellation rules ho hum.

lastly my daughter’s 18th trip to NYC in May this year also bombed out, was again booked with Norwegian took the cash this time, took the hit with Airbnb again.

Suddenly the car seems not a problem at all and I’m now depressed lol

Until about five years ago mrs_map ran a fairly large ladies wear retailer and a lot of trade came via their website.  She's always been very clear that it isn't within "the rules" (distance selling, merchant card agreements and the like) to take payment for something you have not shipped.

In her case if someone purchased something that wasn't in stock when they pressed "Buy" then whatever element of the order couldn't be fulfilled was not billed.  Simple.  And as @ptholt pointed out above any website these days should run stock levels and a decent sized retailer ought to be fully omni-channel to cope with the retail flows in and out of their stockholding.

She (mrs_map) is pretty clear on it and has had numerous lockdown conversations with retailers who've taken payment but not shipped.  One refused until mrs_map got hold of a proper Director (one with legal obligations rather than a fancy title) who listened to what she had to say, double checked the regs/legalities and then issued the refund the same day.

There are exceptions - bespoke and special order items but usually it's a deposit with the balance on shipment.

Personally I wouldn't buy from a retailer who's previously billed me without shipping the same day.  End. Of.

CAVEAT: Do your own due diligence on this point - this isn't legal advice.

My wife runs an online business selling tshirts/hoodies made to order stuff, and she said the same, we print to order but the designs/clothing ready to go based on the receipt of incoming orders, she also said the same re distance selling.

30 hours since i opened a ticket at the porscheshop, still no response. Have found i used to paypal to pay for it so have raised a claim via them.

I've had mixed experience with Design911. The most annoying thing is that as others have said, when you order something on their site, there's no way of telling if its in stock or not. I've also not been informed if something is out of stock until I've either been sent a dispatch note with stuff missing or I've asked where a delivery is. Its just a bit surprising that their website and inventory isn't updated as its really annoying to not know when something is going to arrive when you're inevitably relying on other things like booking a car in with a mechanic etc.

I hope you guys are using credit cards! It's a good way for companies to boost their cash flow unfairly using your monies.
