If it had a new short block then it would have the later IMS.

That is why I'm appealing to @Shazbot to get his engine number as if it is a main series production number not a short block or exchange engine it changes a lot of understanding surrounding IMSB and the switch to the larger bearing.  IF there is an exception out there we need to know so bad advice is not given in future, but unfortunately  I've has no response yet.  I believe I may have asked before and didn't get a response then either alas.

Hi, haven't checked for the engine number , haven't been in/under the engine bay recently. When I did the clutch I removed the IMSB cover and the bearing is fitted 'inside' the casings.

The IMSB is mounted on a larger diameter shaft secured with a 22mm nut. Larger bearing is retained in the engine casings so does not come out without splitting the crank cases. The IMSB cover also has a different part number. I seem to remember I took a picture ro two at the time. I'll see if i can find them.

I will have a look next time in in the guts of it but engine number is no guarantee of bearing type as we know.

Granted I've only been compling info on the IMSB issue for a couple of years now and I do appreciate the three different designs, however you are reporting the first large IMSB I've come across in a 986. The change from dual row to single row is clearly recorded by Porsche in the parts catalogues for both the 986 and 996 in the various engine capacities. Various specialists have shown that the small single to large single happended about 4200 engines of each type into 987 production, I don't have the engine numbers to hand but can dig them out.

So my question would be does your engine number match your build info and match on the V5 or is there a new engine number and the V5 has or has not not been up dated? Otherwise the evidence you are giving contradicts what has been recorded today 'in the field' so to speak. This is. A point of understanding to ensure other owners are not misled in future.

I’m betting where the engine number is normally stamped it will be blank, that is if it was done by a Porsche main dealer.

This is what I’ve been informed by Porsche engineers.

If you have the service record it should be recorded in there and at what mileage it was changed with a job number.

You can then check with the dealer if you feel necessary.

like I said before from what I understand if it was replaced by Porsche on or after 2006 it would have as you have

So it would seem if there is no engine number on the block or a clear exchange engine number @Shazbot we can discount the idea that any 986s were manufactured ex-works with the larger IMSB which is what all the evidence I've gathered so far supports.  I would be nice if you could confirm this at some point please.

Are the 986s with the larger IMSB?  It appears there could be but only if they have had the engine changed either by Porsche under warranty (surely there should be an engine number to update official registration documents???  Worst case would be a car without an engine number gets re-shelled and has to go onto a Q plate in the UK....) or as later swap.

I can’t answer sorry.

All I know is that my car had a replacement engine when the car had only covered 24,000 miles.
Porsche Exeter fitted a new engine when this happened in 2008. The new engine came with the larger IMS bearing fitted. From what I can remember I never had to change any details on the logbook. Just had it marked up in the service book along side any supporting info ie job numbers and costs/invoice.
I have not done any research it’s just from personal experience and now im not taking my car to the main dealers for servicing due to its low value now use a  Porsche independent specialist.
It’s done 43,000 miles on the new engine.

TBH I haven’t a clue what your on about ie ex-works I haven’t read all the thread I thought the post was just about larger IMS bearings fitted to the 986 engine.

I hope this supports your evidence rather than stumble 👍

P.S when it next goes in for servicing I will ask them to look for an engine number or to look if it’s just a blank plate

Large IMSB version of M96 engine was never fitted to 986 model in the factory. i.e. not ex-works, only after sale.

I hope you didn't buy the car because it had an IMS Guardian to the detriment of other condition items as that's easily retrofitable and is quite cheap. As long as you are happy with what you get it's all good.

Nope definitely not only for that reason. It was simply a plus which I appreciated.

I'm very much looking forward to this. Where can I stay up to date about meet-ups? Is there a newsletter to subscribe to?

They are posted under the meets, events and track days section. You can set up for notifications from this section or any other.

Take a look at the link below. There’s something going on for the next 3 Sunday’s in a row if you’re up for any of them

Did you buy it from a member on here? There is a relatively new member with a green one I think with sand interior and definitely the Sport Classic II wheels.

I bought it from a dealer, but it's possible the dealer bought it off a member here. Would love to know who that member is!
