Engine sh!t itself

Sorry to hear this Randeep. Very sad news. I think we all have that deep fear when we take them out, but you gotta enjoy them. I will definitely think next time I am out as mine is a 2.7 03. šŸ˜¬. Good luck and hope you find a decent lump for it.

On another note. I to have the Carrera wheels and was thinking of putting the 5mm spacers on. But looking at the rear, clearance to the rear arch is very tight. Does it all fit ok? šŸ¤™šŸ»

Cheers, hopefully it won't break the bank.

A snug fit on the rear compared to the front wheels but there was room even when lowered 30mm.

Its a b*tch when this happens.Ā  I have an import Impreza turbo that did a big end.Ā  It had a hard life as a rally recce car before I bought it so it had been abused, but at least I knew that.Ā  Tried to work out whether to replace the donkey, sell the car as was or break it.Ā  I was offered Ā£1k as was (this was 2004) and broke it for Ā£1600.Ā  Not recommending this course necessarily and you may not have the space, but there is always a solution, just don't let emotion rule your head too much.

If you have the inclination, the time, the tools and the storage to break it and list all the parts on eBay or Marketplace, I think You'd be surprised at just how much money it would return. Loads of time, hassle, boxes, packing and trips to the post office/drop-off points required though.Ā

Just look on the bright side, If it was a Ā£25k 981 with a blown engine, you'd have little choice but to spend Ā£10k+ to repair it.

Well that's a valid if rather unorthodox viewpoint...

So got a quote for a second hand 2.7 engine with 60k on the clock, new ceramic IMS, new AOS and fitting for Ā£5.2k. Probably what the car would be worth once done šŸ˜ž

Also considering chucking some more Ā£Ā£ for some sort of conversion, but I think that would not be cheap, circa 10k maybe?

@Randeep, presume your car is a facelift - presumably with the M96.23 engine?

Just bear in mind that pre-facelift M96.22 and post-facelift M96.23 aren't interchangeable (without a load of other work).

Ā

Went through something similar, although the failure mode was much more catastrophic. This was on a 133k mile motor.

Got lucky, and acquired an engine with 24k miles and FPSH for sub Ā£4k.

Have dug out one of my old posts - some of this info may be useful:

Ā

Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide.

Thanks KITT, useful info. Don't suppose you know if the M96.23 can be interchanged with M96.24?

M96.24 is the 986.2 S 3.2l engine.

*Should* work fine, but you'll need to get the ECU reflashed.

You're in good hands at Cavendish, they're my go-to indy and they know what they're doing.

I'd be very interested in finding out the root cause of your engine failure.

In the meantime, here is something to add to the man-maths balance, depending on what you're quoted (I am sorely tempted to bid for this myself and exchange my car):

Thatā€™s a Ā£10k engine conversion so well worth Ā£7k in my humble

There seems to be quite a few engines on eBay. Obviously one takes a chance buying them but at least it's already out of the car so any work that needs to be doneĀ shouldĀ be quite straightforward. If my engine does blow up I guess I'll have to do the replacement myself. I'm already too deep into this car to spend a fortune on engine replacement.

I'm sort of tempted to get one and keep it in the garage while I take my time refurbishing it myself. It's just mechanical work so it should be doable. The stuff that screws me up is the electricals and getting the ECU to work etc. I have been thinking of the cutch and cam chains on my current engine. It's on 104,000 miles and those items aren't going to last forever.

I know it's not the same thing but I did my 1975 VW Beetle engine myself. That was fun. Dropped the engine onto the spare wheel and lifted the rest of the car over it with the help of a friend :)Ā I also used to do motorcycle engines in my flat (bedsit really) when I was a student.

With the help of the Bentley manual, and the right tools I'm very sure one can do the work at home. As long as you don't rush things and any specialist work is undertaken by qualified people (skimming cylinder heads or honing cylinders etc). it should be doable.

It's amazing what one can accomplish with very limited knowledge and basic tools.

How about this? (you can probably tell I'm bored at work...)

This has got to be worth a punt. I know it still has 6 days to run on the auction but if you make the guy an offer of Ā£1,500? The Dansk exhaust on it is worth probably half of that already. You an always sell the bits you don't want (I seem to remember you already have a Dansk exhaust).
