I don't remember hearing about these before the 7.2.  Any info if they would be equally easy to retrofit on the 7.1, or perhaps modules are only for 7.2 onwards?

Not for me personally - I find alcantara wheel is a lot cheaper and simpler :) - but general curiosity.

You also live in a country where the temp does not drop into single digits ever!

Picture of the button from one of those ebay adverts.

Maybe look to colder countries for a donor steering wheel where it may be standard or considered more often as an option to specify.  Nearly every hire car I had in Norway and Sweden (sample of 19 vehicles over 2018/19) had it fitted.

They will be left hand drive wheels though ;)

so a quick autotrader glance at pics might not reveal the heated steering wheel is optioned? and there is a possibility that an owner might not know as its hidden? Or do we have stats that there are only 4 in the uk with this option ticked? 🤣

Nope, you will not see it in pics as the button is hidden on the bottom of the steering at the back.
Only way to know would be to obviously feel for the button. It is option code 345 on the list on mine. I would not think its a very common option but definitely not the rarest one (although I think I have that one covered too)

is there an option code that is copied in the handbook ? I'm thinking there could be a few that people just dont know its there... its not like a cruise stalk or another dash button....

was it part of a group of things typically - similar to a 'winter pack' ?

wife's Freelander has it and it is nice on a cold and wet day to take the chill off!

nope its an option to select on the build when new

how do you switch such a thing - some things are obviously added but how does one locate or know if it has a heated steering wheel?

If you have it, the button is on the back of the steering wheel right at the bottom of the 6pm spoke

Generally people have found aftermarket units to be problematic if not specifically for a 986 which allows the small window drop to open the doors.  They are often 996 coupe ones and need a stop adding to make the drop work correctly.  Personally when one failed on mine 4 years ago I got a salvage one (from Steve Strange/Douglas Valley Breakers) which was inspected and tested before sale and it is still doing fine. Cost about £35.  So I reckoned I could buy 3 or 4 salvage original ones (and that could be either side) before getting to the price of just one new replacement Porsche one.

Even OEM ones are designed to fit both the 996 and 986, they come with a rivet to put in the runner to stop the window earlier.

When I had my 986 I fitted an Aftermarket one on the passenger side and it barely lasted 13 months. Replaced with OEM and the same on the drivers side when it went and had no further issues

Took it for a drive, got some photos in the empty car park and then had to change a headlamp bulb - I will never lose the feeling that I'm going to break something getting that fixing back in place

Tip for you... get the headlight into position and as you push it back into place, turn the tool that you use to eject them (but the other way) it helps to lock it in place ;)

    Thanks for the advice lads.

The guy who fitted the new battery came back and swapped it out for a better AGM

He tested the other one and is was 12.4V but just 350 amp, so said it could have been a dodgy battery.

I don't think so, as the battery light is still on with the new one, so I'm expecting the same issue.

I'll check the alternator later when the test kit is delivered.

As an aside, I'm surprised Porsche decided to fit a super heavy battery so high up on the front bulkhead. Surely it makes sense to have fitted it lower down on the boot floor or something...

Doesn't sound like a very good company if they do not even have a basic multimeter to check if the battery they are fitting is getting a charge.

Is it even a company? If so, that is shockingly bad

if it turns out to be the alternator regulator looks like that can be replaced seperately.

Example link, seem to be cheaper ones on the Bay of E/Autodoc https://frazerpart.com/products/boxster-986-987-996-997-all-models-alternator-voltage-regulator

It will probably be the brushes are worn out. Changing parts on the existing one can be hit and miss and other parts may then fail shortly after on it. I would go for an replacement unit and be done with it.

    interesting.

It's a 2nd car and lives in the garage plugged into a CTEK trickle charger.

So I was surprised that it died

Without receiving a charge from the alternator, on a modern car the battery will go from fully charged to dead within half an hour whilst driving.

  11. Sounds like alternator needs replacing to me... battery light illuminates to indicate it is not receiving a charge. Quite likely there was nothing wrong with your old battery, it just was not getting a charge
