  1. 3rd party damage - we have it for our dogs in the event they do something that leads to loss/damage to a 3rd party.

The cover is in two places - a specific 2nd policy for those situations where our household insurance doesn’t cover it (1st policy)

This may surprise many of you but our dogs do not have any money.  They do not vote, read or drive either. But the consequences of their actions are covered by Household insurance.

In this case the 16 year old is equivalent to one of our dogs - and yes his keeper ought to be cleaning up after him too.

Personally I would sue the 16 year old via the Small Claims procedure and go from there.

Great. I'm curious to see how they look. Extra light is definitely an advantage dark lanes but not if they look unseemly. The 911 in snow, where I saw spotlights fitted, gave it an adventurous look.

Here you go - plenty of shots of my lightly tweaked 986S and the aux driving lamps:

These are most of the "inspiration" photos I gathered - not mine, simply gleaned from the internet and saved to help me settle on what may or may not work:

And then there was the C4 996 that so many have seen on Social Media:

Plus of course the 996 GT3 Endurance race cars had yellow lamps inserted where the front number plate normally lives and that looked epic.

I thought map’s 986 looked rather cool actually. That’s why I remembered it. Not sure it would work on a newer car but I felt there was a 90s rally vibe :) it was coherent with the style of the car.

    Thank you 👍

Yes but I wasn’t sure. I saw some on here within the last month or so. Not you? Sorry.

Ah yes - have some fitted and also collected images to help me settle on the install for mine.

Will dig them out and post here.

    👍

I’m generally impressed how many 986 owners are still using main dealers 👍 Hold on in there!

Buy OE parts there and drink their coffee.

I keep threatening to have the 111 point check done on my 986 - I fear that so many advisories/fails for non-factory specification elements would be too much for their systems to handle.

Mind you it would be interesting to ask for a quote to "return to factory".....🤔

  5. Signed up at OPC Hull in mid-December and the membership pack arrived this morning.

Guess I need to wander over for the number plate frames, badges, stickers and the like.

Wonder if the 4 wash/vacuums a year extends to this sort of filth......?

If you're not really experiencing brake fade now on standard then something like the CL RC5 is going to be a waste of money.

This^^ - I use CL RC5+ all round (986s + mods), they work well on the road and are excellent on track.

Road only and I'd look to other vendors - can't make any recommendations though.

The GT1 is the reason why the Boxster has it's lights.  I just wish they were deambered from the start.

Am happy to be corrected but I didn't think that was the case.

The GT1 has its roots in 993 and initially used that model's round headlight - or something close to it.  As the GT1 program developed its design was updated to ensure ongoing compliance with the GT1 regs of the time. This was, I think, the EVO version.  Commercially it also needed to resemble the 911 of the day using the head and tail light aesthetic of the 996 and therefore the 986 headlights.

Am a bit of a Porsche GT1 fan having had a customer that prepped and raced two of them back in the day.  Whenever they were going to fire one of them up I'd get a call so I could scurry round to witness a weaponised 911 literally shaking an industrial unit by its foundations.

  8. Many moons ago I made the decision to keep my 986 having considered the move to 987.

The 987, for me at least, didn't lift the bar - it is after all the younger sibling that tried too hard to be cool and now lacks the grace to understand that tastes have moved on.

    Or something like that.

Since then I've looked at 981/982 but my use and preferences don't build a strong enough case to add one of those to the mix - note add and not replace.

Have driven enough of the later model 98x cars to know that in absolute terms they're quicker and more protective than the 986.  Which is nice, but not for me.  In a world where we're increasingly less connected to our actual environment in the widest sense the 986 is probably one of the last analogue cars which still works in a context that is 25 years on from when it first hit the road.

Are you saying that extra capacity and an aftermarket sump is preferable?

That wasn't my intention - apologies for not being clearer - have updated my post.

If the only modification is to fit an uprated sump then the Porsche version is the best value option - if it'll fit and will allow the baffles/gates to be correctly orientated for a mid-engined motor.

I plan to do 2-3 TD's with this car a year....

I did more TDs than that each year over a good many years on the standard sump with a tweaked 3.2 motor and only had one oil worry which turned out to be the AOS having a tantrum whilst playing with a well driven VX220 Turbo at Bedford.

The only reason I went aftermarket was because I did a few other mods to the engine and it made sense to put an uprated sump in place at the same time.  This particular sump included a higher capacity oil pickup, baffles, anti surge gate, windage tray, greater capacity and a magnetic sump plug too.

Hopefully I've done a better job of explaining myself.

  10. Is the engine in your car a M96 variant? If so then a 996 is likely to fit.

    Just a word of caution…..

Remember that 99x engines are not in the same orientation as 98x engines. So the baffles and gates need to be installed the “right way round” given mid or rear engined use cases.

Am speaking from experience/research which led me to go after market plus extra sump capacity - to be clear I don’t think that’s [an after market sump] necessarily the right route for most folk.

I dont have the rubber pieces on the locator pins.  I tightened the adjustable mounts a little.  I drove the car yesterday and some water drops fell from the central clasp onto me and the passenger seat as I went round corners.

Have my hardtop on - would it help you if I video the area around the windscreen edge to see what differences there might be? If you’ve already got enough reference points that’s fine - let me know.

  12. Was recommended Carbon Lorraine RC5 pads by this forum.

Pad compound superseded by RC5+ which are superb. Mainly road use by me but plenty of track miles - highly recommended.

Initially I only fitted them to the front axle - have since installed on rears too. Another tangible step up in performance.

Brake config is standard 986S calipers and disks. Upgraded fluid, flexibles and underbody cooling.

You can buy direct and they are good to draw with.

My 987.1 is running on PS4Ss & feels really good on the road. Very expensive tyres but very good.

But PS4S is not available in 18” in Europe apart from a special for the Yaris GR.

So it’s not an option for 986 on factory wheel sizes.

    Who makes the 3.2 into a 3.9?

The standard crank throw in the 3.2 won’t give 3.9 litres.

Having been through this loop a few years ago I now know that it isn’t possible without significant (costly) machining to the 3.2 crankcases to fit a 3.6 crank and cage (also costly). If you want 3.9 litre motor start with a 3.6

As you’ve seen a 3.2 will go to 3.7 litres with 100mm pistons and liners - I don’t believe there’s room to go for larger liners in these blocks.

it will not be the final engine for this car, so I will also slowly begin making a 3.9engine as that’s what I feel this car needs.

Lookin forward to reading about this when you start work on it.

  16. Both look great - have (until recently) had both and preferred the Sport Design on my own, silver, 986.

Think the car’s body colour can influence which wheel design looks better on a given car.

What colour 986 are they going on?
