  1. Both look great - have (until recently) had both and preferred the Sport Design on my own, silver, 986.

Think the car’s body colour can influence which wheel design looks better on a given car.

What colour 986 are they going on?

    Interesting.....

Do you have a thread on here detailing these mods and what not?

Not as such - it’s heavily tweaked and the changes are ongoing.
Current setup is 3.7 motor, re-profiled cams, small intake (74mm), lighter (-8kg) rotating/reciprocating crank assembly (pistons- flywheel), custom long manifold exhaust system. With an interim map gives a useful 326bhp at the crank. Torque biasing diff, custom coilovers and chassis setup with better brake cooling, fluid and pads.

Future developments include large intake (minimum 82mm) from in-wing filter to new plenum plus a remap and on road mapping for drivability - hopefully see an up tick on both torque and bhp.

@map looks like a healthy serving of negative camber on the front, must be -2.5 or more?

Not entirely sure - it has been tweaked recently and it’s “pointier” than it was.

  3. Used to work for the railways and because of what I did was Fire Trained across all the then available extinguishers and fuel types.

The first few 1sq m 5cm deep trays with some petrol being set alight and then learning to extinguish that are almost life lessons and gave me a very healthy respect for fire. The kick from the Railway specced extinguishers is etched in my mind and was like shotgun recoil.

Some years later I drove into a service station on the M6 and saw a car with smoke billowing from the grill, a bunch of folk standing too close with an array of extinguishers all doing nothing.

Fortunately I knew what to do and grabbed the largest suitable extinguisher, then the next and those two put the fire out. Clearly it hadn't really got hold but no doubt it was well on its way.

    Why post this?

Well it's great to have the gear but in this instance bloody dangerous to have no idea - open the lid and see what happens to the fire with the inrush of air. Appreciate that’s almost impossible with a Boxster but if you’re thinking about doing the same for a front or rear engined car please think again…

So by all means purchase whichever extinguisher you feel best suits your needs but more importantly learn how to use it and practise setting it off once in a while - then buy a replacement...

    Are you forgetting something?

Have always liked these Gen1 versions - yes seriously.

This sort of metallic colour didn’t do the unorthodox shape any favours as it worked better in darker colours.

Very smart packaging, clever construction and actually quite a nice thing to drive in its day. Proper 6 seater with a decent boot.

  5. The 986 is to "Boxster" what the pre-impact bumper cars are to 911.

When you sit the originals alongside their modern namesakes the newer versions seem to lack the finesse of their "forebears".

  6. Just a thought - is there any way the static camber is different to the dynamic camber?

What I’m getting at is this: Is there a bushing or some other joint that could be deformed/failed in such a way that it allows the measured camber when stationary but when under dynamic load (driving) corrects the camber?

Am only thinking along these lines because the tyre wear you're describing doesn’t seem to fit with the camber you’re measuring.

  7. Are you certain the front subframe is centrally mounted?

Have heard of these being moved over time or by a bump.
Sometimes they’re removed for some other job and not properly replaced or even if they are I think they’re fixed with single use stretch bolts.

I tried to order these to ship to Finland, but Design911 website states on checkout screen, that "The order to EU has to be above 130 GBP"... so can't order those. Never see thia on any country's 'this how we do business' statement (incl. US, Japan, China, Taiwan, etc...).

Least to say, I'm a bit surprised.

I suspect I know why they have that minimum order value.

If it helps order them for delivery to me and I’ll forward them to you. We can work out the onward postage to you - just cover those costs.
Send me a message if that works for you - am happy to help.

I have 18" original Turbos alloys – the car came with 16" if im correct.

The emissions data for a specific car are based on the as built spec of the car.

Which for me is a good thing…..

Given Maps comments about wheel size affecting emissions, out of interest what wheel size do you have? 16" or 17"?

Other items like climate control/AirCon, body kits (that’s probably about it for a Boxster) will also impact emissions figures.

I know this from my company car days. The Benefit on Kind rate for the same engined and bodied model will be different based on wheel choices etc.

  11. Emissions figures alter by wheel size and other options fitted at the factory.

So in that respect the emissions are vehicle specific.

Reading TFL’s note seems to suggest that whatever paperwork you sent them is missing the VIN to link the stated NOx to your actual car.

  12. @Elmer Fudd - really appreciate you making the time to write such a full reply. Thank you.

Now I know they fit and fit well I’ll add a similar setup to my own build in due course.

Am a big fan of the Focal sound - recommended them to a friend who fitted them to his 996 and he loves them albeit he’s looking for more base - DJs, never happy.

Think the dash mounts are from one of the members on this forum @SuperPaulie?

    Mmmm Focal speakers - lovely.

Interested in your views on how they sound mounted in the Bose shelf - have looked at that option before but wondered if the shelf design is too specific to Bose.

Can you let me know which Focal kit or components you have used please?  And if you have them, some photos of the tweeter install in the Bose shelf would be really helpful.

Have you also upgraded the dash speakers and if so what brand/model did you use?

Curious about the sub location  (and brand/model) - where else did you consider putting it?  Under the driver's seat for example?

How have you approached the system's amplification?

Looks like a lot of thought and effort has gone into the car as whole 👏

thanks for information - there is an internal noise and so will get in touch with hartech. any others, ams prosche?

    What is the internal noise?

Not every “odd” sound is terminal.

Have you had the car connected to either a Porsche or DurametricPro diagnostic tool? If so what were the reported parameters?

This is an electronic Throttle Body (eTB) - it does not have a separate position sensor as shown in the video you linked to.

The throttle pedal has a potentiometer that drives the stepper motor in the eTB.

Suggest reconnecting it to the wiring harness and just sit it on the engine, no need to reconnect anything else.  Then put the car into the Throttle ReCalibration routine and see if the butterfly moves during that reset process.  You might need someone there to help either watch the eTB or to instigate the routine.  If it doesn't move then maybe source a good used example - if @edc can't put their hands on one there may be a spare in my own stash. Let me know if that's the case and I'll take a look.

The stepper motor controls open and close so I would expect to feel resistance on both directions when trying to manually move it.

From personal experience a failing/failed throttle pedal sensor will not show up on diagnostics - including factory/Durametric - an engine that doesn't respond to throttle pedal inputs as expected is about the only symptom as far as I am aware and that symptom can also be indicative of other unrelated problems.

If the eTB check I suggested above shows it working then it might be worth trying this:

What happens if you start the car?  Doe sit idle evenly?  If so leave the handbrake on, put it in 1st then gently release the clutch - like a hill start.

Does it just stall?  Or can you feel/hear the engine trying to maintain engine speed against the drag of the clutch?

To be clear this is about seeing how the engine reacts - it is not about moving the car or trying to actually stall it.  And it certainly shouldn't result in clutch damage.
