I think this is the key - buy one that someone else has clearly looked after, rather than one that someone is offloading, and you'll save a good few thousand.

Excellent advice!  I've arranged to look at a mint condition Z4 on Friday but my heart is still telling me I want a Boxster! (my Son is also telling me to get a Boxster - he's 8yrs old!) :)

If you buy the Z4, no matter how much you enjoy it, you will always be thinking "I could have been in a far better looking, better handling, more thought provoking, nicer interior, better sounding, more luggage spaced Boxster ."

Edited for clarification 😆

When I had £5k (plus running budget) to get a toy earlier this year I didn't even think I could get a Porsche so did a lot of research on Z4, TT even Audi S4 and BMW 645.  I was amazed when some Boxsters came up in my search and then a couple of S models came up.  None of the other were a Porsche with all the engineering fame and Le Mans legends etc.  I had to take a punt just to say I'd done it as I really am not ever going to be able to get a Ferrari, a Lamborghini or even a McLaren!  4 months and still smiling! Do it, do it, do it!

That said, last time I did 'as a petrolhead I've got to have that type of car' I ended up getting the Mrs a 57 plate Alfa 147 (4 years old at the time) to say we'd had an Alfa but that seemed to cost even more than a Porsche reportedly costs to run.  I worked it out at £45 per week over 20 months with servicing and repairs (water pump took out cam belt etc, both front door handles fell off and I don't want to think the other niggles) plus depreciation but not including fuel, tax, insurance and MOTs!!!! That said for a hatch it was a nice car when it was working properly.  At least if I keep the Boxster straight, clean and tidy depreciation shouldn't be so much of a problem.

That's a very positive post, my spirit is lifted with this 🙂

If you're doing very low mileage and you get your car in pretty til top shape from the outset then I would be ok with an oil change each year and alternate between inspection/self service and the other year a minor/major. You would probably be ok like that for 5 years.

Thanks for the awesome responses so far 👍🏻So, would anyone be prepared to detail their running costs over the last 3yrs in order for me to form an average? I'm happy to receive the info via PM if you don't want to broadcast 🙂

I paid £4750 for my 2001 S, it needed a little bit of attention to make it good but the main thing for me was a recent Hartech engine rebuild that cost more than the car and immaculate paintwork, apart from stonechips on the front bumper. So costs.....

Wheel refurbishment £400

Clutch kit including update arm, box oil etc £400ish. Changes because it squeaked horrendously, the actual clutch plate and cover weren't worn at all but replaced them anyway

Aircon pipe £120

Rear tuning forks £100ish

Rear brake line, already had some

Two lots of oil and filter changes £80

Roof tension cable £16

Front bumper respray £400

Bypass mod £130

Geo £150

Osram D2S headlight bulbs £70

997 shifter £80

So really the basic servicing has been very little, probably because there was a really good car to start with. All work done by myself other than the geo setup.

It had nearly new Pilot Sports all round when I bought it so I imagine maybe end of next year the rears might need doing, depends how much and how hard I drive it 😃

If you find a good car in the first place Porsche ownership doesn't seem too expensive. My local main dealer quotes 300 quid for a minor service and just under 400 for a major which isn't all that much more than what I was paying an independent garage to service the S Type Jag I had before.

Obviously, if something serious goes wrong and the engine or gearbox has to come out you start talking big money because of the time involved but that's the same for most if not all mid engined cars.

If you look out for a car which has had it's mileage put on at a consistent rate and has full dealer or specialist service history you shouldn't go too far wrong.

Basic servicing on a 986 is similar in price at a main dealer or Indy specialist. But to think you are going to get away with that on a 15+ year old 986 is naive. Ask an OPC for a quotation on replacing AC condensers or brakes. These aren't that hard jobs to do but their pricing is significantly higher than an Indy.

Dig through "running reports" sub-forum for threads of anyone who has a 986. Try to understand what was important eg for MoT failure or running failure, and what was cosmetic choice of the owner.

First off you need a good garage one that knows the car's and understands the 986, they will work out a schedule of work with you,  stuff that's got to be done now,  and other things that can wait.

I did this with my garage the first couple of years I spent up on the urgent stuff then the needs doing stuff,  no mot failures in 3 yearsand the cars 18 years old,   now I just do normal annual services and any top up work or mods mostly I just drive the car very hard and love every second of it.

In Yately he's close enough to Eporsch, so that's sorted!

I would budget £1000 a year for maintenance on average, sometimes may be more, some years only a basic service.

This but its not going to depreciate much.  I had a Golf R on lease previously over 2 years and it cost me £8-9K but thats a £34K motor so its going to cost the depreciation whether you buy or lease and its still going to need servicing. A good reasonable mileage 986 is going to cost you £7K-£9K and then the annual £1K budget but its still going to be worth the £7-£9K in years to come, maybe more.  I don't regret it as soooo much more of occasion to go for a drive in the Porsche with the top down than the cager Golf even though the Golf had all the mod cons. I wish I could my finger on why but I cant maybe its because I'm a biker at heart.......
