Totally godsmacked....

Evening all !

Today I had a real shock when speaking to a Porsche Specialist garage . I called to just ask a general question about a 986 and was basically told that I would be paying over the odds for it, everything under the chassis corrodes and that 2.5 litre engines were no good! It was almost like he was saying all old Porsches should be scrapped and only pay £2.5k for one! I thought I had rang a BMW garage by mistake 😂.

In fairness the guy obviously knows the cars but can you guys see why I would be surprised by the comments, I just found it really strange......

It honestly put me off buying to be honest. I know we are all entitled to an opinion but coming from a Porsche background I was surprised to hear this 😕

Have owned the same 3.2 986 for 2 months shy of 12 years and I don’t recognise this description at all.

It hasn’t been without its problems but none of the above.

Also have an ‘82 911 and it’s also been pretty painless.

Porsche build fundamentally resilient cars

Maybe I’ve been lucky but looking at this forum I’m not sure I have been particularly “blessed”

Buy with your eyes open and it will, in all likelihood, be fine.

And as everyone knows a 986 is the quickest of all Boxsters........

Your summary of what he says indicates that he doesn't really know much about Boxsters. The 2.5 engines had some early problems, but the ones that are still going are good units with a strong IMS. Really not sure where they are getting their information on rust from. Apart from a weak spot below the air intakes on early cars, they are generally rot free unless badly repaired.

I'd ignore them.

Sounds a bit harsh and a bit of a sweeping statement about all 986 s. I wonder if he meant the suspension components suffered from corosion? The bolts and the fixings do rust but know more than any other car of that age!

Ive heard plenty mixed opinions on the 2.5 engine but normally about its power output not its reliability.

Thanks for all the replies.

As Topbox says there's nothing wrong with naming the garage (especially as I told him I got his name off this forum and he said he had never heard of it 😂) , it was Two Plus Two , by all accounts a garage with very good feedback!

He sounded like he had a bad day in fairness! I was enquiring about getting an old change/service done with them if I bought a particular car I am considering. He then asked about the history of the car and price and then proceeded to tell me to leave well alone before teling me about how a car that old will be full of corrosion and need this that and the other doing.

Two plus two are a pair of old scaremongers!

I know them well and their hatred of water cooled Porsche’s is legendary 💩

The are actually very good Porsche mechanics and have worked on my dads 911 s but even then they wrote a report 3 pages long telling him what was wrong with his car. When he asked them about the report with a view to booking it to make a start on all these jobs, they said nothing needed doing it was just their observations!

Three weeks ago a friend of mine bought a Cayman S which we collected from Surrey. Very tidy and came with a full warranty from a Specialist garage. I advised my mate to get it inspected when we returned to Midlands and before his warranty runs out. I had checked the car out as much as I could and it drove and performed perfectly.

A day later I got a phone call from my friend very distressed and scared he had bought a bag of nails! What had bought this about?? A 10 min phone call with those w*nk*rs at two plus two!!

Long story short the car was fully inspected and bore scoped by Ramus Porsche who gave it a clean bill of health 👍

Its almost like he disagreed with just about everything I have learned from people on here.

It can't be good for business surely, if I owned the garage and someone had called me up and asked what I did my reply would have been 'no problem at all mate , get the car booked in and we can do the oil change / service for you for £X amount and we can give the car the once over while its here"

What a load of tosh, ive had a 1997 base 2.5 Boxster for many years now, the engine is very strong even though i will be hitting 200k this weekend, my car gets comments all the time, its not a garage queeen but it has been very well maintained and it looks like a new car.

I would say they guy hasn't got a clue and is just wanting to sell you a newer car which will get him higher commission

200k...... fair play ! 👍

He wasn't trying to sell me anything which makes his comments even more bizarre.

As I have said on here recently (and as is well documented on the 986 anyway) there is a fair amount of corrosion around my exhaust system, but as with everything you need to consider why that might be. These cars for the most part are not every day drivers, if they were, at the age they are now they would all be 200k milers! So like mine, many are wheeled out every few weeks, thrash err.... driven enthusiastically and put back in a garage, sometimes wet. ANY car with this pattern of usage will suffer from corrosion ( I had a Honda that was far worse).

Another point to bear in mind the 986 and 987 were more than 80% (my estimate don't take it as Gospel) the same as the 911 series designated 996 and 997 so do they hate them too? Finally corrosion on Boxsters is in easy to fix places, not so with the older 911s'.

So IMHO they are heavily biased and largely talking sphericals, although I am not sure my first paragraph will do anything to encourage your purchase, seriously, buy one and enjoy it you won't find anyone on here who regrets buying one and for me it is the best 4 wheel decision I ever made and even if that hadn't been true we are not talking life changing amounts of money.

Re-reading the OP re corrosion, it sounds like they've probably had to replace a few to many exhaust manifolds and drop links where corrosion is a bugger. I think I can sympathise given the tales of woe I've read on here🙁

Thanks for all of the very honest replies on this thread .  I know there are things that can go wrong , there are also things that probably will never go wrong , it's just a balanced opinion that I need ....... which is what I appear to be getting  :)

Two plus Two had me starting to look at MX5's for a couple of hours !  .

😆 I feel your pain, I'm currently on the look out for a nice 986 too and when I hear horror stories I keep flip-flopping back and forth with the idea of a 3.0 Z4 as an alternative (flame suit on) 🙂

I don’t know the car or the owner but there was a lovely looking 986 in the classifieds
