Advice for a newbie please!

Hi folks!

I’m new to the forum so first time poster, so please be gentle!

I’m looking to get a 987 Boxster as my first ‘weekend’ car and seem to have seen every one within 50 miles on the internet, but just started viewing them for real. I don’t have any mechanical experience but just want to enjoy the fun of the drive and to look after a beautiful car.

i have found one I really like, great condition and FSH but I am concerned about the wheels.

It has 19” Alloys fitted (see attached) which look to be in perfect condition which is a bonus given most other cars I’ve seen have signs of wheel erosion, but:

1) Are these a genuine Porsche wheel design?

2) What impact does 19” wheels make and are they ok for the car?

3) Depending in the above, what impact does this have in value and future attraction for resale?

These may not be my only questions about this or other cars, but I would really appreciate tapping into your knowledge and experience!

Many thanks

James

Welcome. We don't bite...well not much anyway.:woot:

Those look like they're probably Turbo's so no problem. The majority of 987s probably run on 18s but most agree that 19s fill the arches better, particularly if the car is lowered. Ride is probably harsher on 19s but that's about it.  A 987 already has a few years on it so condition is likely to be more important than wheel size when it comes to resale. You need to test drive and see how it feels but concentrate on history and condition and evidence of any work done such as suspension refresh, tyres (not cheap). Enjoy the search.

Edit: if you can post a link to an ad then we can 'critique'. (constructively).

I have 19’s on mine and find the ride is fine. It’s a sports car after all so never going to be wafty.

tyres ain’t cheap though, so check the ages, not just the tread depth and use to bargain if needed.

Fantastic thank you (knew I’d come to the right place!).

This is it, would welcome any thoughts/comments:

Looks tidy, double check the clam shell when the roof is down if you go to see it, it shouldn’t sit up like that.

mot history looks good as well

it needs a service ideally as the last one was sep 18 - again, use it as a bargaining chip.

guess you know the wheels aren’t standard, so if you are feeling brave you can also use this as a discussion point when talking price - I.e. lay it on thick that you really wanted a completely standard car (even if you didn’t)

be nice to get that for £10k if you are lucky

Thanks again all. Really appreciate the advice.

I have been to see it today (but didn’t have time to drive) and the clam shell wasn’t up like it is in the advert. I checked there were no creaks with the mechanism etc.

Roughly how much extra are we talking for 19” tyres than 18” or 17”?

Tyres will be 265 65 19 and 235 65 19 just have a look round for prices, Michelin mp4s are probably the best for it,

Check the air con is really cold, new condensers probably if not working,

Look for gravel rash behind the front wheels where the sill meets the wing,

Drive quite slow over a bumpy bit of road and listen for any strange noises from the front suspension,

Check pads and disc, look for a lip on the discs, can be done yourself for around £150 front and same for rear if you do it yourself, double that for a specialist to do it,

Technically it's not due a service until September, porsche say every 2 years, but every year is probably better,

Oh and move the front passenger seat forward get your hand under the carpet, hard to explain but the it's two separate carpets where the back joins the floor, if its wet could be the door seal leaking or drain holes blocked, dont rub the carpet you need to be underneath

I have seen some wheels like that from a third party manafacturer although Porsche also make wheels in that pattern. As someone else said, a good bargining point, the Porsche ones will have a part number stamped on I believe. Car looks good on them for sure

those wheels look very much like the 20" wheels that came on our Cayenne...don't think they are genuime 987 wheels at all.

Easy thing is to just price up tyres on one of the major tyre retailers websites and look at the difference for 19/18 etc

https://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m55b0s4006p0.

Tyres will be 265 65 19 and 235 65 19  as @brendon says above

can someone give him the correct sizes for 18's?

Wheels are the easiest thing in the world to swap. If the rest of the car is good, buy it.

Yeah I get that but it’s a fairly major expense to add in to the overall cost.

Also, has anyone else who has changed/upgraded wheels found it to be an issue with their insurers?

A while back me and @onedesi compared our 987.2 which are identical except mine is on 18s and his on 19s

TBH we couldn't detect any difference in the ride, perhaps you heard a little more rumble but you were really having to look hard for differences

And his did look better than mine from the outside... (see below)

So why am I staying on 18s?

Simples, it's the crappy roads that just keep getting worse for pot holes

I feel I'm not having to watch for every pothole and I feel the extra wall height gives that little bit extra protection to the alloys

As for the looks, when I'm driving it I can't see the wheels, only the interior and bonnet so as I didn't buy it for the benefit of others, I don't care... :thumbsup_still:

Is it me or is the arch gap quite big considering its got 19's on, might be the pics but....

I would check that it's been lowered and not simply had 19's slapped on it 🙂

65 profile sounds awfully high, are they not 35?

18’s are 235/40/18 front & 265/40/18 rear

doh... that will teach me for not concentrating and copy/pasting!

yes 35 profile on 19s

My previous car was a 987 on 17" wheels. My current 987.2S 19". The ride and road noise on the present car very noticeably worse. As is the tram-lining. Both cars on new Pilots. The 19" do give slightly sharper handling, though. And the bigger brakes are superb. And the 19" suit the car better looks wise. So really down to how you use the car.

James, great as thew car maybe, pay to get an independent inspection done. I rushed into mine, had a few 911's in the past and to a degree knew what to expect re the drive. Seller (private sale) seemed reputable, took me for a drive (like he stole it), I drove it, loved it and purchased it. On recommendation from a friend, took it to he's local inde for a safety check to make sure all was good....Wasn't allowed to take the car back from him for safety reasons, brake lines all corroded to point of 'an accident waiting to happen', took me all over the base of the car on the ramp showing me the issues, week later got the car back with just over a £3.5k bill. For piece of mind, get it checked, money well spent. All the best, M

No, the 987.2 does look like it's been jacked up, as standard.  I remember @edge bought one when they were new and the ribbing he took over the ride height.

It was Porsche's first exploration into the Convertible SUV Coupe sector

I can just hear an Audi exec thinking "now that is a good idea, we haven't got one of those..."
