Buying advice for 986 that has been stored

The potential problem with some of these cars is due to the low mileage covered, people don't bother changing the oil at least annually.

You quite often see gaps in servicing of two/three or even more years due to lack of use. Short trips won't help here either.

A well regarded indy on here has reported that he sees significantly more chain guide wear on cars which are serviced every two years as opposed to annually.

If it's been sitting 10 years it would be wise to drain, clean the fuel system, change the fuel filter and add new fuel before starting.

Sounds like a car that will need recommissioning with all systems and mechanicals worked through, with replacement parts where necessary, before its put back on the road.

Must admit it intrigues me. Such cars are rare.

Hi

Its a steal at 5k IMHO. Really. You could make some cash immediately or just enjoy the car.

All the best and hope it works out. If you change your mind I will buy it :).

@suffolkporker as per my previous post, and a few others have said, IMHO for £5k plus probably £2k (with contingency for a £1k more if need be) it would still be a good buy.

It would make it a 20k mile 2.5 Boxster in launch colours for £8k... any specialist would have that for sale at £12k-£14k, if I'd found it I'd already have done the deal if condition is as you say (and I don't need another 986).

I’d say £5k bite his hand off... early Boxster in an original condition with that mileage will be sought after for sure...

the only problem you’ll have is will you want to use it once you’ve got it back to working condition, as it’ll be a shame to add miles to it...

As a comparison, my friend in Greece has an Alfa GTV6, similar mileage, well maintained and stored in his completely dry underground garage for 15 years!

He just recommissioned it, cost him €5k, needed a new fuel tank, all new rubber components, new clutch etc, Parts are harder to find for that than a boxster but much cheaper labour in Greece too!

Me too, rare indeed. I have budgeted 2k ish for hopefully getting it going again. I think we have a deal that works for us both. We are both sleeping on it and hopefully will be done tomorrow.

I sat in it today and despite the decent layer of dust it still smells of new leather.

I have a garage ready to revive it and transport sorted to get it there. Should we get over the line I will start and ownership thread and document progress.

Thanks for the help and advise and p*ss taking :)

Best of luck.  Look forward to the reports once you start work.  Hope £2k covers it...

Do we need a new 'Barn Finds' Category???

Yeah, park that one right next to the delusional new owners or bottomless pits 😂

Before starting up it would be wise to change the oil and turn over the engine before starting, ie disconnect the coil packs (spark plugs). Parts are not cheap and costs mount up but a find like that does not turn up often.

Go for it

Spark plugs. My indie mentioned when a guy didn't bother replacing plugs as usual, a tip dropped in and blew a chunk out of his cylinder wall.

You might want to change them sharpish.

Hi

This thread reminds me of when I was in North Wales on the annual MG Owners club outing about 20 years ago (I have been going for 30+ years! and go in the 993 now). It was cancelled this year for the first time (COVID).

I had taken a Lotus 1968 +2 up that year, and sitting in the pub one of the guys mentioned that there was one sitting down the side of his factory unit in Basildon, and that it had been there under a tarp for years.

So being a real +2 fan (I have had several) my ears pr*cked right up. I got the guy to phone his colleague ASAP, and it turns out it was a 36k mile car that had been parked there for like 20+ years after one of the electric windows failed. So I do a deal and go to collect the car. If you know anything about these cars, the bodies are fibreglass so never rot as such. Everything else disintegrates though. The car had maybe 50% of its original paintwork (a strange fawn colour) still attached.

I really wanted to save the car but ended up breaking it. The engine was good. As was the steering wheel. I still have some of the parts. Funnily enough my brother listed some on ebay recently and I actually have the starter, water bottle holder, engine fan and mounting bracket packed up and ready to go at the moment. Hermes were supposed to have come today but did not turn up.

All the best

Berni

Sounds about right for an old Lotus.

Loads Of Trouble Usually Serious.  Doesn't come much more serious than rotted away chassis...

Hi

I think the next year it was, I crashed the yellow +2 on the same trip. Lost it on a tight corner on an absolutely dark night and smashed straight into a slate embankment (I thought I was on a straight piece of road). Destroyed the car completely right up to the front wheels. The headlights were truly terrible in that car. Fibreglass is really fantastic at absorbing impact I can tell you though. Both the wife and I were uninjured and made it to the pub pretty much on time after hitching a lift.

Electrical gremlins were common. It had one where every light on the car would suddenly go out and the interior light would come on. Made for some really scary moments.

And yes, when the body came off  to inspect the chassis it was cracked in multiple places. And not from the accident.

Great cars though and years ahead of their time.

I've only just spotted this thread, sounds like a fantastic opportunity in my opinion.

With regards to a reputable independent who you could trust I can provide you with a couple of suggestions, I am in Bocking Churchstreet which is North of Braintree and not a million miles away from you.

- PIE Performance (Sudbury): 01787 249924 / https://www.pieperformance.co.uk

If I can be of any further assistance then do let me know, would be happy to put my nose on it / lend a second set of eyes if that is of any use to you.

Cheers and Good Luck, Nick
