Wheel refurbishment

Good morning all,

As spring is about to happen I have started thinking about the wheels on my 987.1 which have started bubbling.  The wheels when I got the car (last May - how time flies!) were silver with black centre and spokes and a small black line round the rim, so I am guessing someone had custom painted these as I don’t think that was standard (unless you know otherwise?).  Whilst they are certainly individual I think I would prefer to go back to a single colour, I was thinking of a dark silver/gun metal colour but would like to keep within the Porsche colour ranges so grateful for any suggestions.  I would also be grateful for any suggestions of where to get this work done ( I assume powder coating will be best?)

So any help with colours and companies around Billericay (Essex) who you could recommend will be appreciated.

I think those are rather pleasant. It looks like someone has tried to do a Fuchs tribute.

As you have a Sport Edition with black badge and black tailpipes (or are they dirty?!), and possibly black side intakes? I'd stick with black to tie them all together - yeah I would say that, it's like on mine... But if you disagree, and hey it's your car, red will take any of the usual colours, no need to worry there.

Chris at Exel wheels is very good and has a good reputation across a few forums with Porsche wheels - he's who I go to for any wheel refinishing work or change of colour etc.

Chris collects and returns your wheels & supplies loan wheels while yours are away. That's service.

I used Chris to do mine, excellent service and finish 👌

I have used Chris at Excel too. The good thing with Chris is he uses a third party to refurb the wheels (Lepsons I think) so he is in effect is their client. Anything not right, those wheels will be back to Lepsons for correction. He is your quality control, offers a good service,  at a fair price. If you stay black, I do think a silver line around the rim really makes the look by helping to define the wheel in the arch. Sure Chris will have good advice on the aesthetics too.  Oh Excel are home counties btw, who you use may very much depend on your location. Good luck

Thanks all, it looks like everyone uses Chris at Excel so I will give him a call and see what is the best way to get these refurbished - I had not realised how difficult it is to envisage your wheels a different colour or design until I started trying to imagine this.  @Menoporsche I see what you mean about the Fuchs tribute, I guess these started out as standard silver and someone has added the black.

Lepsons (this is who Chris at Exel uses too) powdercoat using an automated process that keeps the wheels flat when going through the oven. The result is that you get virtually no orange peel.

I've visited lots of local wheel refurbishment companies in the past and, without exception, there is always orange peel with their finish. All of them powdercoat. This puts me right off powdercoating. Am I being too fussy?

Lepsons is good, of that there is no doubt. The thing is, they powdercoat only the face of silver wheels, the barrel stays primer coloured. This means that when they fire powdercoat through the spokes, you get a 'overspray' in the barrel. They can powdercoat the inside of the wheel too but it costs £50+vat per wheel on top of their standard refurb charge.

Whilst on the subject, just looked at the wheel bolts and can see they need a refresh too if I’m going to get the wheels done.  I saw there was some recommendations for longer bolts with the wheel spacers, but any suggestions for normal bolts please?

If they are the standard silver finished bolts, silver Hammerite happens to be a very close colour match, just prep them well and apply two coats.

Didn’t realise that Lepsons charge extra for powdercoating the inside of the wheel - how tight is that?!?!

I had mine done by a local franchise of The Wheel Specialist a few years ago. To be honest I’ve always been dissatisfied with the finish of them. Whilst not ‘bad’ they are far from perfect & wish I had paid the extra at the time to have had Exel do them. I’ve never seen a bad review of his wheel refurbs.

I've seen lots of powdercoated wheels on display at various local powdercoaters. I've never been overly impressed with the finish. The thing is, from a distance, and when transformed from being poor condition in the first place, they'll always look good. It's the orange peel that bugs me the most though.

Yeah, know what you mine. Mine have orange peel...

One thing I’ve noticed with Exel refurbs is that the wheels look super smooth, probably helps in keeping them clean too.

Wonder if I can justify a fresh refurb on the basis they’ll be easier to clean....? 😂

Easily, with the application of some man maths to the problem.

I have had a chat to Chris at Exel and he is super helpful, he has sent me pictures of red Boxsters with different colour wheels but he recommended go back to stock Porsche silver and having looked at them I have decided to go with that.  So will leave the side vents as they will tie in well now.  I shall have to do some before and some after shots.  The quality of the wheels he showed me was brilliant.
