Considering this Boxster S

Hello all. I am seriously considering buying this little car after debating saving up a bit more and looking between a 987 boxster or cayman...for now though this will be a comfortable price point and strikes me as such an interesting little car.

It's basically sat about for 10 years covering a few hundred miles. It's got one working key...not bad service history up til 2009, missing just one year and one not done by porsche/specialist.

Apparently brakes, clutch etc are ok. But do I have tunnel vision for this car or should a  low mileage near un-used car just be walked away from? I've had a look at the guides on here but anything else I should think of? It's just been MOT'd too.

On the plus side fresh mot and service but I would be worried about any car that's sat around undriven for so long. These cars (like most) really need to be given a regular run out. Others can probably flesh out the reasons for you.

With low mile cars, they can initially be attractive, but it's important to keep up services annually, if not more frequently, regardless of it not doing miles, full history on this car would be 19 stamps. As a comparison I bought my 2003 S last May with 58k on the clock and had 16 service stamps. If it really has sat there for 10 years with the same oil, personally I would avoid it. In my experience, cars just rot and seize if they're not used.

If the story stacks up (eg check no MOT history last few years) and it has a clean MOT then it could be a good buy. I’m not up to speed on prices for these cars but assume the statement that it is priced cheap due to the lack of service history whilst stored then the fact it has been stored for a long time would not put me off. You just have to go into a potential sale with a slightly different mindset. It also has about the right mileage for this type of buy, eg if it had very very low mileage eg <10k then it would be priced high BUT many “semi” consumables usually related to mileage may need replacement simply due to age perishment. However any car >50k miles will start to see some replacement being required (especially suspension related) and so you are not paying a premium for an ultra low mileage that still needs money spending in it. If the car has a genuine clean MOT pass, is to be serviced and stamped, has evidence of storage (eg not MOT history) and is cheap, then it could be a great buy 😉

Something doesn’t seem right to me, I can’t decide what.

The interior looks a bit tired for 50k and I wouldn’t like a car that has been sat around that long.

Having owned a 986s I would try and go for the facelift 3.2. The updated bumpers, hood etc make a big difference. My pre facelift was a great car but I spent a fortune updating it 👍

I'd avoid for the reasons stated above, but also how did the brake pipes become excessively corroded enough to fail an MOT when it was dry stored🤔 I'd expect a car that's sat unused for 9 years to have a string of faults once you start using it again. Seals will have dried out, brake calipers and shocks may have corrosion on moving parts ready to damage seals when used again. The seat on my car looks better than that and mine's on 148k🤔

It might be fine, but I'd not pay a premium for the low mileage as this is usually a sign of potentially low maintenance requirements, but not in this case.

Wow thank you all for everyone's responses. I also feel the car's interior looks a little worn for the mileage but low mileage cars will have people hopping in and out all the time. The MOT history stacks up in terms of the length of time it's been stored.

I will ponder it. I do like the idea of an early S because they were the first ever, I will ponder taking a chance on it and just know that I'm going to need to factor in the possibility of suspension components, clutch, oil pump etc. Likewise I can't see me losing much money on buying the metal of the car, which is attractive with it being low mileage. I'd probably only do 2-3k in it a year myself, perhaps less. Although i'd maybe use it more often to try and keep it getting used.

Just seen recent MOT History....oil leak...RMS probably and it's 3 owners, not the one. Nothing's going to be perfect mind you...and it's only 20 miles away not 250 like the 50k mile one. Hmm..

That's way too much money for the mileage it's done, even for a face lift and that's not one. Apart from the wheels, there's barely anything on the spec. "Extensive options" that doesn't have heated seats, xenons, cruise control or bose, is not extensive.

"The interior is exceptional" - yet no pictures of it. Honestly, I'd avoid that ad out of stupidity of the owner.

Apologies, one side on picture with no floor mats, but you can't see the drivers seat...

For something pretty similar last year, 2000 S with 91k miles in silver, only 17" alloys and standard stereo i.e. no door speakers but with OBC and xenons £4750.  OK, paint damage on front bumper, shot a/c condensers and duff reversing light switch and 4 perished CV boots, but recent clutch (with RMS) and brakes.  Can't see £2.5k difference between the two.

Seen that on eBay recently. Nice car but not my favourite interior though. It might sell quicker if the decals were removed.

I'm still drawn to the early 50k mile one! I know I shouldn't be, not great spec but is nice and original. Seller will only get it serviced at his local garage. I'm not keen so to make the service history look a bit stronger I might see if I can get the price down a bit l, not get him to do the service and i'll get it done by Kenny Dunn or Brian Miller motors, Edinburgh.

I wouldn't want to be the one to take that car on after such a long lay up either for all the reasons outlined above, paying a premium for the privilege, err no. If you do at least get it checked out BEFORE buying by a Porsche specialist.

Service at a local garage is totally fine as long as they use good oil, any monkey can service a car, even myself. It's not like Porsche get a cloth inside the sump or anything. The best way to do this is buy your own oil and get a local to do it if you can't do it yourself, that way the history looks as good as any.

Get the car checked over by a Porsche specialist if you are really interested, it should identify any visual problems you can't see. Well worth a couple of hundred pounds, if it's a crappy one. Personally, I'd steer clear with pistons doing nothing for 10 years.

Seems like a nice enough car for a. Wet reasonable price. The seller is saying all the right things but it looks they have barely owned it a few months.
