Saxosim
Hi All, I have been looking around for some breakdown cover so that I am suitably covered in my 986 S Just in case anything were to happen as I am planning a lot of weekend trips and drives out this year and really don’t want to get stranded. A lot of the companies I have looked at don’t seem to offer cover for cars over 10 to 12 years old. I then looked at a few classic breakdown policies and they seem to say the car has to be over 19 years old so I appear to be in no mans land. My 986 is 16 years old this year, can any other 986 owner recommend a good breakdown company to try for cover? Thanks in advance
K.I.T.T.
I have an RAC policy that covers me as a driver or passenger in any vechicle. Their definition being: “vehicle” means a UK registered vehicle that complies with the following specifications: 1. It is either a car, light van, motorhome, or minibus that is less than: a. 3.5 tonnes; b. 6.4 metres long including a tow bar; and c. 2.55 metres wide; or 2. It is a motorcycle 49 cc or over and is not a mobility scoote No age clauses. The youngest car in my fleet is over 14 years old and I haven't had any issues. Having said that, the last time I used them was at the end of Jan when a pothole killed a tyre on the Polo. Took them 6 hours to come out!? They've been reasonable so far (have used them a handful of occasions over the last decade, up until Jan this year. Based on that appalling performance, I'm going to be looking at other options come renewal time.
Richard Hamilton
I have an AutoAid breakdown insurance policy. It covers me and Mrs H in anything we are driving. It isn't a traditional breakdown policy. If you break down they arrange someone to come out to you. You pay the service provider, and then reclaim it from AutoAid. About £40 a year. Billzeebub
AA with mechanical breakdown policy. Never needed to use it for anything more than a flat battery but nice to have the peace of mind
Topbox
I think the AA are worth a shout, especially if going abroad. If you bank with Nationwide they offer decent cover plus travel insurance and other benefits with their Flex plus account thay costs £13 a month so you need to do your sums, but its a good deal for me at the moment. bally4563
I use Green Flag, just the vehicle, only with recovery for £8 a month, used them recently when my car went bang!! Excellent service, got me home and even helped to push it into my garage, can't fault.

Jason986S
I often switch between AA & RAC, like for like cover, just who ever is most competitive. Often play them against each other annually. I pay about £11 a month for me and the wife in any vehicle, home, roadside and relay, UK wide.

jonnyp
I'm with the RAC and managed to negotiate a price of £115 for two vehicles (2006 987 and a 2001 Merc) and a price freeze the following year at renewal time ?
jollop
Autoaid here too. Bargain at £40ish, any car for me and the mrs. As I can’t remember the last time I broke down I’m happy to pay on the day and claim back later.
Qwerty987
I’m also with AutoAid and had to use them last weekend! You no longer have to pay anything yourself, they now deal with it all. We were recovered 125miles home with no fuss and a fraction of AA/RAC policy cost. Also no bureaucracy!
CMA
Another +1 for AutoAid here. Used them once, fast and efficient, even took notice of what I said when I requested they send a flat bed due to low front on the kit car.
pgk188
Another +1 for auto aid, took my car from home to Porsche specialist last autumn when my alternator died.

Carlie Howden
Just now, Saxosim said: Thanks it’s a leisure car and will probably do about 5k per year at a guess £115 is the maximum you'd pay for breakdown which is the over 16 years standard policy If you have a vehicle with us on insurance we have options to add to a specialist policy for leisure vehicles (starting from £44.95) All breakdown policies include the Roadside assistance & recovery, Home Start, Onward Journey and EU use. Hope this helps!

Carlie Howden
No worried Saxosim, like I said our policy covers a lot including EU so there are lower cost policies out there with the less comprehensive cover - it's whatever's best for you and what you need it for at the end of the day Loz987 give us a call if you have any questions Carlie
