Nearly fell off my chair!

On the phone to the indie who is doing some work on my 987 and amongst other things, quoted me the sum of £750 for supply and fitting of 2no Porsche front disks and pads.

What on earth!?

Obviously I told him to politely refrain from that aspect of work.

When I first got my 987 it had advisories on previous OPC service so I thought for a laugh I would ask OPC for a quote. They said £750 and I thought not too bad for all four. "Oh no sir thats just the fronts. The rears will be.....£750."

Did mine myself with Brembos (from ECP) all round for £300.

Porsche parts come to about £500. Pads seem to be the most “outrageous” being about 140 for an axle set.

In the service history for mine is front disk/pad/wear sensors/screws/bolts from opc (west London). Think it came to just over 800.

This is one place where I would consider high quality alternatives or OEM non Porsche branded.  There’s some serious mark up going on there.

Balls to paying £750 per axle for brakes!

That’s what I said!

I actually replaced the discs about 3k miles ago so really don’t know why they are suggesting them to be replaced!

Money spinning swines.

DIY the whole lot for a few hundred quid! Or £500 at a decent garage I reckon.

We had a urgent re-call on our 12 month old car, the garage completed the  work and informed us they had carried out a "free" safety check on the vehicle.

When I collected the car I said "great", they said we just need to bring to your attention the front brake pads are worn to which I replied "well that's odd the mileage on the car is only 4,500!!

So you replaced the disks and put back in old pads that 3k miles later prompted an Indi to recommend changing?!  Why weren’t the pads changed with the disks?

Sorry, I should elaborate.

In 2015 the car had new Porsche disks and pads fitted at another specialist. Sought advice on here about a year later re juddering under braking and subsequently changed the disks to some Pagid units. The juddering disappeared until the car sat for a months or so after a hard run and then the juddering returned (and is still somewhat intermittent).

The signs point to a pad shadow on the disks.

Yup, it's called pad transfer.  Slip some Performance Friction pads in, as they will often clean the disc - saves skimming the discs.

IIRC a Nissan GTR is about twice that 😳

The M4 is about £1200 per axle.. I got lucky, mine were all changed under warranty by the indy seller as they were under the thinness limit when I got the car! Instantly added almost 10% value to it :)

Just recently did my fronts. Pagid discs and pads. Cost £220 for all the parts from Eurocarparts and fitted them myself. It was easy (i'm no mechanic) as long as you have the correct tools, took 45 mins each side. My car wants for nothing and I've always gone to the OPC to have work done. However I couldn't swallow the £800 they wanted to change the discs and pads. Just had the car MOT'd and a major service with no advisories and brake feels superb.
